I do wish Watt would score and commentate without worrying 'what the judges are doing'. I know he's keeping everyone in check but he scored it a draw when some of the rounds he gave to Sturm were clear macklin rounds with Sturm throwing maybe 5-6 punches.
Whatever we all knew he wouldn't get it out in germany, bastards that they are.
But that cant be true mate. Because at the end of the eleventh round Sturm had landed something like (only) eight shots less than Macklin.
Dont take too much into those punch stats mate,i used to .then i found out the stats wasnt done anyway scientifically just two guys trying to keep an eye on the fight from ringside with calculaters.
They can still only see it from one angle and can be blocked by the ref so they are not as accurate as they seem.

And we all know pro boxing is about counting up punches landed at the end don't we.........
But the point being, your clearly describing something that didnt happen. By the end of the eleventh round Sturm had landed 130-plus punches, quite simply he therefore landed more than 5 or 6 rounds per round.
I never once suggested that professional boxing was scored solely on individual punches landed, so quite why you responded to my post with this point is somewhat confusing. Can you explain?

Yep Im unsure what fight I was watching judging by some people on here, maybe a lot of people swayed by listening to a commentary rather than properly watching a fight? I duno but I can't make a case for Sturm winning that fight convincingly, if he'd scraped a decision he'd have been a lucky boy. Macklin definitely robbed in my eyes.
How many fights have we watched over the years where we have said 'he won it on workrate'. 'Engine' fighters, Chris Edwards comes to mind the other week. That's how I saw Macklin tonight, not only that he was landing enough times for people not to be able to say he was just hitting gloves, he was getting ropund that guard a lot and the body shots were excellent, Sturm's body was really reddened up.
let me first say i've never been over bothered on macklin, maybe because im a barker fan and also in the few fights i have seen of macklins he looked gassed in the second half of the fights.
BUT
He made a fan of me tonight, it was like rocky v apollo creed, one flashy and one all out warrior.
I thought macklin won by two but i knew in germany Strum would get the nodd, we wouldnt have done anything differently if it had been in britain so we can't complain.
Big Big respect for macklin he left nothing in the ring, the first 4 rounds he peppered strum with the jabb and hammered him with the body shots they were the perfect tactics. Strum did the classy stuff later on. He sat infront of strum all night giving him the toughest win of his career by far.
I think macklin was unlucky but it wasnt a robbery, it takes more than a belt to make someone a champion and macklin proved he was a champion tonight. He was a machine.

WTF was Jim Watt going on about! He gave Macklin no credit for his workrate in the second half of the fight. TERRIBLE night for Jim IMO
watt is a true proffesional. he saw the fight i saw. macklin stormed into a lead oveer 6. than the greater quality of sturm came through. Sturm had macklin seriously hurt. how the fornicate can the title be taken away from him based on just a very effective body attack. Maclin didnt land enough clean face shots. I had it a draw or sturm winning by one just like watt. but i do agree the scoring of 116-112 was wrong. Maclklin deserves a bigger payday and rematch
According to a German journo who I follow on Twitter, Sturm announced on the house mic that he would give Macklin a rematch.
Lou DiBella tweeted: "GREAT JOB Matthew Macklin. Team Martinez respects your performance and your heart, CHAMP. Sergio Martinez will not go to Germany for Sturm!"

I think macklin asked for one after the fight just after the decision was given, it definatley looked like he was.
I would hghly doubt strums management team will let a rematch happen.

Yeh I don't think they'll be looking to do that one in a hurry and if they do it would be back in germany with dodgy judges again anyway.

He looked pretty bashed up for someone who didn't take any head shots!
WOW im normally quiet on here and love to listen to what people say etc especially the actual boxers. getting to here from the horses mouth like frankie gavin and curtis woodhouse. my girlfriend hates this site now but i thought balls with it im gona voice my opinion for a change. (im from sunderland so excuse any charver text language)
i read 20 comments down then i thought f*** it. im gona have a say.
JIM WATT hates anybody but scottish, i was disgusted in his commentary. i cannot for the life of me understand how macklin lost that fight. ive watched it twice i had him at least 4 rounds ups. maybe his work was hitting gloves but at least he was working. i dont know how he lost a round first 5 or 6. i do believe he should have kept up working that body but he still did not lose that fight.
Fcuking boxing in Germany is bollox. Macklin won this fight, granted it was close and was easy to be lead by Jim Watt who suggested 1 or 2 decent punches from Sturm was enough to win the round. I had Mackin by 3.
Johnny Cucumber wrote:Did Macklin have a higher work rate and throw more punches - yes
But hitting arms elbows and gloves with 80 % of your shots does not win you a world title fight.
Sturm won clearly with better quality and more effective punches, if anyone looked like they were about to get stopped it was Macklin.
Brave performance though from the Brummie, and a good fight to watch.
Absolutely spot on.
Jim watt is the best pundit out there by a thousand miles! He's non partisan, intelligent and insightful. People hate him because he doesn't mindlessly support the UK fighters.
Storm was barely troubled by macklins punches. Storms work was quality, eye catching and damaging.

The most accurate punches all night were Macklin's right hook to the body. Did ye not see the state of Sturm's right ribcage????
There should be a rematch and have it in Germany, but with Serbian judges
I had it by Macklin by a round but i knew that wasnever going to be enough especially over in germany.
As stated before landing a load of shots on gloves, arms and elbows doesnt win you world titles, Sturms work was classy and eye catching.
But Jim Watt?????? im actually going to start watching with the sound down, i know boxing is very subjective but its like he pick his man to start and the other guys work doesnt count! was the same as with groves/degale, between him and johnny nelseon it makes me mad
Lets hope Macklin can get the fight in the UK next time. However, I think the fight was very close. I must admit, I thought it was an off night from Jim Watt UNTIL they got back to the studio and Johnny and Richie who basically gave Sturm no credit at all - their punditary was rediculous.
Whilst I think Watt's could have given Mack more credit in the 2nd half of the fight - his card was about right for me.
Woodhall has always been very biased when it comes to scoring. I remember he had Froch 3 or more rounds up against Dirrell or something crazy like that!
I thought Sturm could have done more though. Macklin left it all in the ring. Despite what Macklin said at the end, the only fighter that looked hurt at any stage was the Brummie.
