Macklin robbed ??
Re: Macklin robbed ??
I scored it to Sturm by 1 so not a robbery IMO
Good fight though!

woodhall also had glen catley (a pretty aggressive fighter) beating himself, after winning their close fight for the WBC super middleweight title.steve689 wrote:Richie Woodall has always scored for the aggressor, it doesn't matter if you're landing or not, as long as you are coming forward. He was the same when Rees fought Kotelnik.
I think Macklin can feel hard done by, coming away from a fight after putting so much into it, with nothing, is hard to swallow. But I think Sturm blocked and slipped a lot of punches and when it came to pure quality he was the boss.
However, 116-112 was way too wide, a draw would have been fairer.
That was a great fight though, real quality in the exchanges and not just mindless blood and guts. What top-class boxing is all about.
Re: Macklin robbed ??
Finally got around to watching it last night....excellent fight and Macklin really brought his A game.
It was close and could have gone either way IMO, but they both knew they were in Germany and boxed accordingly. It's no use saying "if that fight had been anywhere else" because it wasn't ..... and if it was, Sturm would probably make adjustments.
It was a great effort from Macklin and the big positive here is if Macklin can always turn in performances like that, he has arrived in world class.

Re: Macklin robbed ??
I scored the fight on the basis that I was "one of those judges in Germany" and had it 115-113 to Sturm.
Watched the fight again in full last night (the German TV broadcast) and scored it again.
I actually thought Matt looked even better on reflection than I originally thought.
Here is my card -
1. M 2. M 3. M- 4. M- 5. S 6. M- 7. M- 8. S 9. M 10. S 11. M- 12. S = 116-112 Macklin
The ones with the dashes are ones that a judge could have possibly given Sturm if they were looking for reasons to score to him.

Re: Macklin robbed ??
In a refreshing move, The Ring magazine have rewarded Macklins performance in spite of the result and bumped him up their rankings from 5th to 4th (technically to 5th as Martinez is their Champion). While this may be a bit arbitrary (as all non-computerised rankings are) it does reflect that Macklin put in a performance of genuine class that warrants him being considered among the top guys at the weight. A boosetd ranking in the Ring Mag will also surely help in terms of profile which, in turn, should help negotiations for a rematch.

however, and sadly, this fight happened on the same night as dullard devon alexander scraped by nearly man lucas matthysse, another controversy. so most yanks are obsessing over that fight.
i wonder if someone like chavez jr or pavlik would want to fight macklin.
Re: Macklin robbed ??
Someone made a good point in a YT vid that this being a bit of a phone booth fight made it a lot harder for the judges to see everything that's being landed. That may have been one reason why Sturm's cleaner, and therefore easier to see, work may have been scored more than Macklin's higher volume of punches.

Now that the Compubox stats have come out. These are a hell of a lot more accurate. It shows that the stats on the night were flawed as they usualy are.jonp wrote:Dont take too much into those punch stats mate,i used to .then i found out the stats wasnt done anyway scientifically just two guys trying to keep an eye on the fight from ringside with calculaters.liamlion wrote:But that cant be true mate. I do wish Watt would score and commentate without worrying 'what the judges are doing'. I know he's keeping everyone in check but he scored it a draw when some of the rounds he gave to Sturm were clear macklin rounds with Sturm throwing maybe 5-6 punches.
Whatever we all knew he wouldn't get it out in germany, bastards that they are.
They can still only see it from one angle and can be blocked by the ref so they are not as accurate as they seem.
Macklin threw double the amount of shots. 1102 macklin 519 Sturm.
Landed a lot more shots 314 macklin 187 Sturm
and Macklin outlanded Sturm in every round apart from the 11th
In the first 8 rounds Macklin at least doubled the amount of Power shots landed compared to Sturm.
I know stats dont say it all but Macklin had only 2 rounds where he landed less than 23 punches. Sturm didnt have a single round where he landed more than 22?
I thought Macklin was slightly hard done by when the decision was announced. Now after looking at these stats i think he was hard done by.I know a lot of people are saying Sturms shots were more accurate and eye catching but if you look at Sturms reddened ribs i think Macklins eye catching shots were maybe ignored because he was throwing so many shots.Sturms stood out because he wasnt doing anything else.

Re: Macklin robbed ??
This fight just show how subjective scoring can be. You have a pretty even split of people going for either fighter. Really depends on what you prefer.
One thing I would say about a rematch is that it's slightly worry how easy it is to snap Macklin's head back. Sturm was able to land flush far too often and for a guy whose power is hardly vaunted, seemed to stun Macklin each time he landed. Sure the way Macklin came back throwing twice the amount of punches was commendable, but I think it showed that he felt he needed to answer back. Would have personally preferred MM to throw a few less shots but put a bit more behind them and tighten up his defence.
I fear he might be a bit of an accident waiting to happen. Would like to see him in with Lee next if the rematch doesn't happen

Re: Macklin robbed ??
Think the punch stats prove beyond doubt that Macklin won the fight
Re: Macklin robbed ??
Bear in mind that punch stats do not reflect quality of punch or strength of punch. This is key to scoring a fight.
