Re: Trivia Quiz: Record Fight Attendance
The record for attendance at an outdoor fight is held by Ali-Spinks II, 1978.
Which fight came so near to breaking that record, however, that it was mistakenly announced just before the bout began that Ali-Spinks II's record had been bested?

I think your boy Julio has the outdoor record.

Just to repeat: your answer to Question #2 is correct, but your answer to Question #1 is only partially correct--like 1/3 correct.SaadOffTheDeck wrote:Dempsey/Tunney & Dempsey/Carpentier?

I'm sure Dempsey-Tunney is correct, by 1/3 I presume you mean the 2 opponents are wrong?Ric wrote:Just to repeat: your answer to Question #2 is correct, but your answer to Question #1 is only partially correct--like 1/3 correct.SaadOffTheDeck wrote:Dempsey/Tunney & Dempsey/Carpentier?

Re: Trivia Quiz: Record Fight Attendance
Yeah but I thought the first had the highest attendance?
Re: Trivia Quiz: Record Fight Attendance
Correct, Dempsey-Tunney I in 1926, with 120,557 -- believed to have been the largest attendance in boxing history to date. Folks had just said "Dempsey-Tunney"--without specifying which of the two Dempsey-Tunney bouts. That is why the answer to Question #1 was only 1/3 correct. Now it is half-answered. To completely answer Question #1, what was the next fight that exceeded that attendance record?Scottrf wrote:Yeah but I thought the first had the highest attendance?
That answer will help explain the answer given to Question #2: who was definitely present at both bouts.

It was Chavez & Whitaker which almost busted Ali-Spinks II.SaadOffTheDeck wrote:I think your boy Julio has the outdoor record.
Re: Trivia Quiz: Record Fight Attendance
Tony Zale had a fight with a massive crowd.
Re: Trivia Quiz: Record Fight Attendance
Their second fight had an attendance of over 104 thousand? I am struggling to think of another pre war fight with that amount other than their original fight?
Re: Trivia Quiz: Record Fight Attendance
That's the 1941 date I think.bennie wrote:Tony Zale had a fight with a massive crowd.
Re: Trivia Quiz: Record Fight Attendance
Congratulations, gents! Tony Zale vs. Billy Pryor (August 16, 1941), with attendance of some 135,000. Jack Dempsey refereed that bout, so he was definitely at both record-setting fights.
I wonder what the next record-setting bout was. I myself don't know.

Re: Trivia Quiz: Record Fight Attendance
JCC/Haugen had well over 100k.
Re: Trivia Quiz: Record Fight Attendance
Estimates are often wrong. For example, next day reports of Packey McFarland - Mike Gibbons bout estimated the attendance at 40K (NY Tribune), 52K (Brooklyn Eagle), 50K (NY Evening Telegram), 45K (NY Times), 40K (Philadelphia Inquirer sporting editor), close to 60K (United Press), 35K-40K (NY Sun), 35K (Boston Journal). The official count was only 26,072.
