Cuban "defectors"
Can anyone tell me, what exactly is the legal status of Cuban "defectors" back home in Cuba when they seek political asylum in the United States? I just wonder what life is like for these guys who jump ship, does the Cuban government stop their families from joining them in their new country? And can they ever return to Cuba as foreign citizens?

Read that Cuban Olympian Joan Pablo Hernandez defected earlier this year in Germany. Hernandez was the weakest boxer in the Cuban National team and reached the Olympics only because of a misunderstanding that led to leave out Cuban No 1 Yohanson Martinez. Hernandez lost in his first bout vs russian Evgeny Makarenko and I doubt he'll go far as a pro. He's slow and easy to hit. He hits hard though.

Cubans consider defectors as the scum of the earth.
US govt. likes to call them 'freedom seekers'.
Put it this way, they tend to be treated with contempt by not just Castro but the Cuban people.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------.
Wrong, amigo. Castro - not the Cubans- consider them scum. On the other hand, most of us Cubans consider Castro as scum. Don't believe totalitarian propaganda. And they are freedom seekers.
Casamayor, Hurtado and all others are heroes to the Cubans both in and out of the island.
I suggest you read "In the Red Corner" where one can see the exploitation of the amateur athlete by a totalitarian system.

That is an excellent book, and I'm sure I have it kicking about somewhere in a box. If you really want a copy I will rummage around and see if I can send it to you. It's a very interesting insight for the serious amateur boxing fan such as yourself.boxmel wrote:Enrique - just received the following email - I'm bummed.![]()
"Thank you for your order, unfortunately the book "In the Red Corner" has gone out of print and is no longer available. Apologies for the inconvenience."
Hesketh and Venceremos - just on a whim, I did some internet searching and came up with http://www.abebooks.com who has 16 listings for the book "In The Red Corner." Prices range from USD24.00 to $8.00. I purchased the cheapest book and with long-range shipping, cost is USD$16.++.
Maybe Venceremos can also order his own copy and all three of us will have our own to love and cherish.
Again, Hesketh - many, many thanks for your help and offer to send your very own copy.

If any of you got more info to add to his Wiki you can do it here: http://www.boxrec.com/media/index.php/B ... dez:324252
