The point had been taken by Cortez, he waved them together, the 2 fighters walked to the middle and Ortiz carried on apologising trying to hug Floyd, Floyd acknowledged and then started throwing, Ortiz went down and that was that.

Floyd was well within his rights IMO, personally I think Ortiz had given up mentally. He was getting taken to school, barely landed a shot. Floyd said he can have a rematch if he wants one, can't say fairer than that considering Ortiz's headbutt, which was disgraceful.

I think that Ortiz knew that he was probably going to be out of his depth before the fight began and after three rounds he knew he was out of his depth. He was hanging in there but couldn't land a shot and was getting countered and out smarted by Floyds hand speed and timing, hence his fustration and the eventual butting of Floyd. It did seem to me that Ortiz went out of fight mode completly when he lent forward and kissed floyd and then wanted to extend the hugging contest aswell. I found it strange how relaxed and smiley Ortiz looked when he was on the canvas and after in the interviews. Contrast this with how Judah reacted after being stopped by Tzsyu all those years ago. So i agree, i think he knew he was in for a beating later on in the fight, knew he had butted out of fustration and also knew that his naivety had resulted in being caught off guard.

Do you not think that Larry is entitled to ask a question about the ending, particularly when there is some pretty vociferous booing from the crowd and the footage shown in the ring shows that the hapless Joe Cortez wasn't looking at the fighters?

Floyd acted like a spoilt child and to square up to a man 50 odd years his senior, demanding his sacking from the TV company that has made Floyd a very rich man and telling him "you ain't sh1t" are actions I wouldn't expect from my 2 year old. I think Merchants response was pretty reasonable in those circumstances.

Neither guy comes out of it well, but that sort of behaviour is more in keeping with Floyd than it is with Merchant. Your wrong in saying that it's the tv company who has made Floyd Mayweather a rich man, it's Floyd and his like who have given Merchant a good standard of living without throwing a single punch in 50 years !! Merchant did nothing wrong, he asked the right questions IMO. Mayweather's imaturity shone through once again by throwing his toys out of the pram for no real reason. Merchants response to his child like rant was pure class! Their spat was the highlight of the night, much more interesting than the fight itself.
Joe Cortez should take the brunt of the blame for the ending. I did not hear him say box on, but he certainly waved them back into action, albeit not authoratively, he then proceeded to take his eye of the ball for over 5 seconds and by then it was all over. Bottom line is though Ortiz should have protected himself 'at all times'.

I believe Ortiz could possibly have beaten the count, but may have opted not to.

For gods Sake, mayweather has been out of action for over a year, and he's just taken on a guy who beat Berto to win a title. What the hell do you expect? Mayweather is only human mate, this was a tune up, but he took on a guy who is young, hungry, and just won a world title belt.

Cortez was looking at both fighters, they touched gloves and as Floyd set himself with his hands, Ortiz then goes to hug Floyd at which point Floyd threw the first punch, Ortiz looks at the referee and then Floyd throws the second punch. Floyd has done nothing wrong here apart from maybe not showing "sportsmanship" in waiting until Ortiz gets into fight mode again. The point is that it was Ortiz who did the illegal move by headbutting needlessly and that's why he found himself in the situation in the first place. Mayweather was just doing what he does within the rules and Ortiz was plain naive in that situation
