Whoever landed first would be a good "guesstimate" but I think that would have been Hearns, and probably quick. Either way I sure as hell would have loved to see it !!!!

Hearns didn't?
Jackson was obviously a huge puncher, but Hearns carried power up to 175 where he was destroying tough guys like Dennis Andries. Jackson didn't do it against the kind of opposition the Hitman did.
So yeah, I'm comfortable calling Tommy a bigger puncher.
Re: JULIAN JACKSON VS THOMAS HEARNS AT 154LBS
They both had one-punch KO power, though Jackson hit as hard with his left hook as he did with his straight right and he could cripple an opponent with either hand! Hearns better all-around, but very vulnerable to taking a punch and the same can be said of Jackson, but I think Jackson was faster and if his left hook could land faster than Hearns' straight right then it's good night! I would bet on the fight, but I would probably choose Hearns by KO early! Someone would be knocked out early...again...whoever lands first!
Re: JULIAN JACKSON VS THOMAS HEARNS AT 154LBS
The smart money would be on Hearns to nail Jacko early.

But remember Jackson knocked out the speedster Terry Norris in 2.
ITS WHO LANDS FIRST WINS IN THIS FIGHT.
Re: JULIAN JACKSON VS THOMAS HEARNS AT 154LBS
Hearns was aggressive, particurlarly early on and Jackson liked punching with his opponents, catching them by surprise.
Speed kills here (and power). Hearns had the reach, superior speed and devasting power. Jackson would try to wing with him and whilst I could not rule out Jackson somehow landing a bomb of his own first, I just can't see him beating Hearns to the punch and when Tommy hit you, you stayed hit. No questions.
Could be over in 1 round or 5. Just can't pick against Hearns in this one.

Didn't Andries go down 5 or 6 times in that fight, and in fact got up after the 4th or 5th one and knock Tommy down?
Imagine Jackson getting up and nailing Tommy on the way in to finish it.
I think the who lands cleanly first is the best guesstimate.
Re: JULIAN JACKSON VS THOMAS HEARNS AT 154LBS
Yep, 5 or 6 of them. But when Andries KD Hearns it wasn't called for some strange reason :??
Jackson definitely has a good chance. If Hearns comes out bombing away he'll get tagged with at least one haymaker and it could all be over. But I'd say Hearns would box for the first art og the fight before opening up and KOing Jackson about round 8

It should be remembered MM handled scares far better than Tommy. I dont think for one moment that Hagler, Leonard, Barkley, would have KO'd Mike.King Geedorah wrote:Hearns had better technique and would hold him off with the jab and his boxing ability early before decimating him with left hooks to the body and right hands. McCallum handled Jackson well, a few scares aside, so you would expect Hearns to do to the same.

Mike had a much better chin, but Hearns escaped several times during his career. His heart was massive. Jackson and Curry are the only two that I recall hurting Mike at 54. Tommy could do it too.duranfan wrote:It should be remembered MM handled scares far better than Tommy. On a related note, how is it that Hearns went from a light hitting amateur to one of the best punchers ever? Was it a style change?

He learned how to use his leverage and put more torque into his punches. He didn't turn his shots over in the Amateurs.

The strange thing about this one is that Hearns could have won easily if he elected to box & use his skills, but it was so easy to draw Hearns into a slugfest that I think this is what he would have done, then it's a question of which on lands first.
I can't honestly call this one, because it really is a toss of the coin contest.
The odds favour Hearns, due to his ability to box, but his suspect stamina & his inability to improvise under pressure until much later in his career seriously count against him too.

Leonard was in retirement all the time Hearns was at 154lb, so it's a bit unfair to say that he wanted no part of Hearns at that weight.elmersalsa wrote:I agree with you...Hearns at 154lbs, was a monster. Maybe the great Mike McCallum, that's it. That Hitman that crushed the great Roberto Duran in only 2 rounds, even though, Duran was way past his prime, speak volumes for me.Grimm wrote:A better matchup would be Jackson vs Trinidad.
Hearns was better than Jackson at everything.
Hearns by KO in 5 rounds.
OK, he came back once in '84, but that was at his natural 147lb & although SRL was a former champion at 154lb, I don't think it's a weight he saw himself at at that stage in his career.
I do agree that Hearns was a killer at 154lb though & it would have taken an immense opponent to have any chance against him at that weight.

I actually think Jackson is slightly the bigger puncher in this matchup, but it doesn't really matter. Neither guy could take the others best punch and Hearns would be more likely to land the first big one. I think Hearns wins this 7-8 times out of 10.
For the record, the only guy who I think beats Hearns more than half the time at 154lb is Sugar Ray Robinson.

I'd agree that Hearns wins about 8/10, but no way was he a more concussive puncher than Jackson at this weight (or Middleweight, for that matter).

Get back at me when Jackson stops a Light Heavyweight cinder block. Tommy was better than Julian at every phase of the sport.

Re: JULIAN JACKSON VS THOMAS HEARNS AT 154LBS
Was Pacquiao a harder puncher at Featherweight than Danny Lopez because he carried his power up the weights better? Some fighters are just built better for weight jumping due to their natural frames. Hearns is a prime example. At 154 or 160 Hearns did not show superior power to Jackson (nobody did, at any weight class). That's where this fight is taking place. Hearns has the Duran and Shuler KO's, whereas Jackson has Drayton, Graham, Norris, etc. Most of Hearns' KO's around these weights were due to accumulation, and his overall winning record was 7 KO's, 5 decisions. Jackson's KO record was much more impressive, and his amount of high level KO's (i.e. one-shotting an opponent to sleep and the like) surpassed that of Hearns.SaadOffTheDeck wrote:Get back at me when Jackson stops a Light Heavyweight cinder block. Admittedly, the Duran KO is as impressive as anything Jackson did, but he didn't have those kinds of deadening KO's time in and time out like Jackson. The quality of the KO's are the best measure of a fighter's power, in my opinion. Even if you disagree, Jackson's KO record was superior as well. So he takes it on both fronts.

It's very interesting this debate & it seems to come down to a debate about which one was more powerful, but the more interesting questions would be, which one had the better chin & which one had the better stamina, because those 2 attributes would decide the winner of this hypothetical match-up?

Just because Hearns had the ability to box and he used it doesn't mean he lost his power. Even a guy like Geraldo who went the distance with hagler got demolished in one round by Tommy. Juan Roldan was tough as nails and he got face planted.King Carlos wrote:Was Pacquiao a harder puncher at Featherweight than Danny Lopez because he carried his power up the weights better? The Duran KO is as impressive as anything Jackson did? It's far more impressive than anything Julian did. Hearns high level KO's came against sturdier chins. I'm not discounting Julian's power, it was obviously immense. But he wasn't as devastating at Middleweight, plenty of guys stood up to his shots. Agreed on the quality of KO's, that's where Tommy gets the best of him. As for overall record, I consider you too knowledgeable to use something as weak as KO% in a debate. Was Hector camacho a bigger puncher than Ike Williams?
And yes, Manny Pacquiao was a bigger puncher than Danny Lopez.

Really? You think Pacmans punches were harder than Little Red's @ FW? I think Pacman was a much better fighter, but the fact that a guy as slow as Lopez could stop so many world class guys was pretty amazing.SaadOffTheDeck wrote:And yes, Manny Pacquiao was a bigger puncher than Danny Lopez.

FW was probably one of the weight classes where Pacquiao's power was purely near its highest effectiveness. He was big and developed enough to really get leverage under him than he lacked when he was a Fly/Bantam, and he legit hurt Barrera, Morales, and Marquez who were basically his 3 highest quality opponents at the time he fought them (considering what they achieved up until then and afterward). Only now do people realize this since Marquez exploded his blown up LW-WW run.
