Minter would win. He could fight at a very high pace and I see him outboxing Benn and wearring him down for a late stoppage win.

I'm surprised to find myself on the other side of this equation from Silkov but I would call it for Benn.

Benn would have the edge in power but I think Minter could outbox Nigel and he had better stamina. If you've seen his fights with Finnegan you'd see that Minter could really go to war and be ferocious when he wanted..... he's very underrated these days.

Saw him fight Hagler, two Antuofermo fights, Harris, Tonna, and always liked him. Just a gut with Benn on this .

Hey would you agree he would have won the first Tonna fight if it would have played out? Just curious. Not many saw those fights probably. It was hard for me to get those fights on tape having to get the "PAL" format switched to US>

I haven't seen the Tonna bout but from what I've heard about it Tonna started very strong but Minter was in control and had Tonna wilting when a right hand from Tonna opened up Alans forehead. All Minters losses came mostly from cuts... even the Hagler fight was cuts. Its interesting that out of the two Minter had shook up Hagler with a punch but Hagler hadn't shaken Minter up. Thats about the only time I've seen Hagler stunned by a punch.
I thought Minter was robbed against Hamsho.
I think Minters biggest problem against Benn would be getting cut, but if he avoided that by boxing more like he did in the late 70s then I see him winning. I'd put Minter above Watson and Eubank... both of whom had an edge on Nigel.
Having said that I think Nigel was probably a better fighter at 168... which is another argument!...

Hagler definatly shook Minter a couple of times in the fight.
Minter did catch Hagler with one shot, but there was only going to be one winner right from the start

I think Minter was shook up after he was cut and he couldnt see the punches coming. I'm not saying that Minter would have beaten Hagler but had he not fought the wrong fight (slugging it out) he would have lasted much longer.... perhaps even have gone the distance.

Minter kayo Benn? With his shitty arm punches?

Minter was a chump, Benn would overwhelm him & bust him up like Hagler did IMO.

Minter is no Watson. Hes not even a Eubank.

I'm a huge Benn fan. But Minter had durability and stamina which are the two things you needed to beat Benn at 160.

Benn will do damage early on and that will go along way to deciding the outcome. If it gets ot round 6-7 then Minter would win.

since we are talking benn at 160...we are not talking about benn at his 168lb prime when he was the complete version of benn...but we are basically talking one of two distinct versions of benn.....A) the pure wild punching power puncher who had scored 22 kayoes in 22 fights and got his commupence against a competent traditional stand up british boxer in Michael Watson, also the first genuine top 15 foe he had faced...... that version Minter would handle with ease and kayo around 8 or 9 with benn exhausted and punching himself out and being kayoed by minter for the full count.

Or we are talking the benn who went to america and added stamina, pacing, lateral dancing, better bobbing and weaving to his wild swinging and power...the benn who outboxed good top 20 guys like sanderline williams and jorge amparo and kayoed fringe contender jose quinones and stopped top ten dewitt and barkley....that version of benn is a far far tougher match for minter.....I think that version of benn would be unlike what minter was used to in europe and would batter minter to a cuts defeat in 8 or 9...with his sheer power and wild swings....

I gotta go with Benn, at either weight. Better puncher, reckless, wild and heart in abundance. He would out bully the bully in my opinion. Minter would want to trade after getting hit hard, that is his nature.

I'm a fan of Nigel Benn but I think both Minter and Finnegan were better over all fighters, tougher and with better stamina. Perhaps though Nigel could have beaten Minter on cuts.

I also note that Hagler was hurting Minter with punches and would have stopped him imo, without the cuts.

I saw ome of the Minter-Finnegan fights on ESPN Classic last year and it as an incredibly tense fierce war. Both had complete dominance at differing times a real barn burner.

I wouldnt neccesarily call Benn a "smarter" fighter . Minter was a very very smart boxer throughout his career all the way from his olympic medal up to undisputed middleweight champ. Just a shame on his biggest night against Hagler he threw all that out of the window. Benn was just far more physically gifted with power and speed plus he didnt cut so easily!

he won an Olympic bronze, i thought. but i take your point that Minter wasn't lacking smarts, in fact ringcraft and skill were overwhelmingly what got him where he was IMO. guys with paper skin and a middling punch tend to be pretty smart if they can get to the high level Minter got to.
