"The Galveston Giant."

Out of the ring, he was known to some as, "Li'l Arthur."

Meldrick "The Kid" Taylor was a nice touch, given for his quickness on the draw.

No idea why they also dubbed him, "TNT,"

And I spent five minutes laughing as I repeatedly misspelled Cincinnati to massive frustration for Ezzard Charles. That's one of my trouble words, I always go with one n and two t's.

I also took a while figuring out why Hammerin wasn't acceptable for Hank.

I missed Jack Dempsey NP, Canto, Gavilan, Peter Jackson & Bob Murphy.

Who were the Iron City Express and Dead End Kid? Nice aliases.
G," The Iron City Express "was the famous monicker of Harry Greb, alongst the "Pittsburgh Windmill "
name. Harry Greb was so highly regarded in his time,he needed TWO nicknames...
The "Dead End Kid" was young Rocky Graziano, when he first went AWOL from the Army, and was the best street fighter on the lower East Side of New York. I saw him about that time he started...

The Boilermaker

The King of the Canebrakes

The Harlem Coffee Cooler

The Brockton Blockbuster

The Bell-to-Bell Bomber

The Green Machine

Hands of Stone

The Jewel of the Ghetto

The Boston Gob

Madcap Maxie

Black Uhlan of the Rhine

The Fargo Express

The Michigan Assassin

The Cincinnati Cobra

I always especially liked:

The Great Benny Leonard . . . it was almost like it was part of his name.

Least liked:

The Fighting Marine . . . Tunney and all Marines I've known have hated it. Why? Because ALL US Marines are Fighting Marines. To single out one Marine as "the" Fighting Marine is an insult to all other Marines and the espirit de corps.

"Uhlan" is what the Germans called their lancer regiments in WWI. It had a Prussian or Polish origin. As I understand it, the "black" had to do with Schmeling's black hair, dark eyes, and swarthy complexion.

I think it sounds cool.

i love those oldschool nicknames, but i don't like 'the upstate Onion farmer'. no way a guy with his style shouldn't have a nickname that alludes to his ferocity.

was it Quarry who was 'The Bellflower Bomber'? that works for me. that, 'Fierce Eagle', and Livermore Larruper. they work.

He was always doing something mysterious in the ring apparently, which I find funny.

Tommy Ryan said the only thing mysterious about Billy Smith was how many ways he could figure out to foul you in a fight.

When Smith began making a name for himself as a fighter, he was very vague when answering questions about his background (where is was from, how many fights he'd had, etc.). This prompted a sportwriter to question, "Who is this mysterious Billy Smith?" And that's how he got the nickname.

The explosive thin man is cool. El Terrible. The Swaffham Gypsy didn't go down too well with the owner.
