He has to go down in my opinion as one of the ten greatest fighters thru history. Discounting the Heavies, I'd rank him top 6. He was very special and his record was amazing. I think he went 97-0 before Randall beat him, and to be honest...JC's days were gone by that time. He was at his peak in the late 80's/early 90's. His chin and stamina were unreal and his body punching Legendary. He did however lack speed and was a notoriously slow starter, that's why Whitaker and Taylor looked very good against him.
Whitaker beat JC very clearly (before Randall did) - Whitaker beat him clearly and did so quite easily in fact -walshb wrote:He has to go down in my opinion as one of the ten greatest fighters thru history. M. Taylor beat JC as well - It was a terrible decision by Steele which allowed JC to get the victory (give all respect to JC because he was going for it) - but Steele should have known the time (all Ref's are aware of the 10 second spot) -
JC was a hell of a fighter but he was clearly beaten by Whitaker -
Taylor was done
In my opinion when JC knocked Taylor out in 12th round, Steele made the correct decision. Taylor was done and on its way. By the way, Taylor was holding on the ropes after being on the canvas, he could not stand for himself!
Maybe Steele made the right decision, I'm sure he loses no sleep, my guess is Taylor would have lived to tell how he won the fight but lost the war. Richard was faced with a decision and he made it. I think he choked in the clutch as a ref. Others think he saved his life. It's only a game, so if thats what Richard was thinking he did do the right thing.
I of course disagree with both Chuck Giampas card and the Ref's decision.

M Talyor was not that out of it in the 12th round - He was definitely rocked...but no more so than Corrales Vs Castillo.
Nor more so then dozens and dozens of other fighters who are allowed back into the fray at least one more time before calling the fight off -
Steele made a terrible decision! Period. M. Taylor's life was not at risk ....that is just hyperbole type talk -
It is the Ref's responsiblility to know when there is 10 seconds left in every round (that is why you see them hit the mat at the 10 sec mark each and every round) - it is for the Ref (and the fighters) to know to be prepared for the end of the round -
If Taylor would have just stayed down!!..he would have been saved by the bell and won!! - Since he wasn't that hurt and could get to his feet...Steele then takes the victory away from him by calling the fight off -
Pure BS -
Additionally then JC goes on to get clowned by Whitaker only to steal a draw -

Meade, you need to get real mate. Taylor was hospitalised after that fight due to the fact that he swallowed nearly 2 pints of blood, had severe rib brusing and his kidneys were also fucked. What more would you have liked him to suffer before you would say his life was at risk??. You are quite clearly one of these fight fans who is not happy unless he sees a fighter suffer, and unnecessarily suffer...Steele made the call based on the fact that Taylor was CLEARLY unresponsive, had taken a lot of punches thru the fight. Steele said it right when he said..."no fight is worth a mans life"

Exactly. Taylor was never the same fighter again.ringsider wrote:If you really watch that fight...Chavez beat the hell out of Taylor. Steele did the right thing. Taylor was out on his feet. That night Chavez beat Taylor's career right out of him....he was finished after that fight.Once it is beaten out of a fighter, they never get it back.
