Who did Hatton's dad play for?

I keep reading in the papers that Roy Hatton is a 'former pro-footballer'. Does anyone know his history, what club, did he ever win anything?

I believe he was the reserve right-back. He wasn't a big star or anything.

i imagine he played in the early to mid 70's.

I think he played for Sheffield United. I think he might be popping along to Bramall Lane sometime at the end of November for a visit. Not sure why he'd choose then.

He played for Manchester City from 1966 to 1971 but I think he was largely in the reserves.

Has anyone actually checked with City? Reading up old Boxing News and RH say's his grandad was City's Legendary - 'Spider' Hatton. Dad and Grandad and RH all on City's books...Sound's too impressive to be true, anyone help.

His father Ray was a City player in the mid 1960s though he never played at first team level. Ricky came close to following in his father's footsteps and could have been running the Blues engine room for Stuart Pearce.

"Because my dad was on the books at Maine Road before an injury ended his career, it was natural that I should grow up as a City fan," he explained.

"I was a fairly useful midfielder when I was a kin and represented Tameside Schoolboys.

"Then I spent two years at City's School of Excellence and for a while thought I might be following in my father's footsteps.

"But all the time I was being pulled towards boxing. I spent so much time chasing fights that I hardly attended City's School of Excellence and, in the end, the club decided to let me go.

"But as things turned out, that was best thing that ever happened to me."

No idea about the "Spider" nickname.... probably the same reason as the Coronation Street character was called "Spider"! (Or maybe Ray was a big fan of Spider Webb or Spider Kelly when he was younger!)

Wasen't Sir Stanley Matthews' father a pro fighter ? I seem to remember something about him saying he tagged along with his Dad when he did his roadwork when he was quite little.
