The most undeserving "champions"
The most undeserving "champions"
Given the plethora of alphabet organisations and all the various International/Inter-Continental belts out there, who would you rate as the worst holder of a title belt, or the worst opponent ever allowed to fight for a title?
To start off...
Kreshnick Qato - managed to get his hands on the WBA International and IBC International titles ( in the case of the IBC, against an opponent who was 0-1-1)
Eric "Butterbean" Esch - Made a few defences of the IBA Super Heavyweight Title - I wonder if it was created especially for him?

There have been some
Nothing beats Francesco Damiani (spelling?) who reigned as WBO Heavyweight champion during Mike Tyson's hey day. If you categorise Eubank as a world champion, then surely you must class this guy as one.
I thought Eduardo Marquez (the guy Calderon beat to win the title) was awful when Sky showed their fight. His record before and since suggests nothing otherwise.

Paul Weir fighting and winning a world title in his fourth fight was pretty poor. He wasn't a bad boxer who made one successful defence. He then went on to win a second world title, but never beat the best in Britain and later lost a commonwealth and European title bid.
As he made a few successful defences then perhaps harsh to join this list, but still shouldn't have had those shots.
When comparing the records of two of Sheffield's finest Middleweights of the 90's its hard to remember that it was Paul "Silky" Jones and not Herol Graham who can say that they won the Middleweight title. Again, I might be harsh because he beat the champion (who went on to prove himself again this decade) but still not one of our most celebrated champions.

One of my favourites is Maselino Masoe, won the WBA middle title in May 2004 and hasn't defended it since.
But i see he has a defense lined up for November against Felix Strum, so may have to take him off the list

The best thing about that is that Masoe knocked out Evans Ashira in two rounds..... putting him down three times in the process..... and that was at middleweight.topper123 wrote:One of my favourites is Maselino Masoe, won the WBA middle title in May 2004 and hasn't defended it since.

Calzaghe hit Ashira with everything he had for at least 3rds before his hand allegedly broke.... and couldn't put a dent in him

Stu mate, you might've missed this thread (good choice, they've been saturating the board lately): http://www.boxrec.com/forum/viewtopic.p ... 391#325391stujones wrote:Oh so Hobson is paying him more than Frank then?boxingchat wrote:How about Ricky Hatton - there's one disloyal money grabbing greedy little bastard.
I bet you you were more of a fan of his when he was selling out the M.E.N defending his WBU carbage.
Sky are putting up the bulk of the money, Warren is on ITV, etc.

I would have agreed but for him being very unlucky in losing a EBU title fight in Germany vs Ulrich. He should be EBU Light Heavyweight champion - although yes, his geniune wins at Super Middle are not against particularly good level fighters and for him to win the lonsdale belt doesn't look good at that weight.
If your talking domestic champions, then undoubtely Mike Deveney is the worst British champion I have ever seen, Jamie McKeever wasn't great either (but always exciting).

I read it, and from what I have seen there is no concrete proof that Hatton is getting paid more for this fight or that it is Sky and not Hobson who is paying Hatton.Manos de Oro wrote:Stu mate, you might've missed this thread (good choice, they've been saturating the board lately): http://www.boxrec.com/forum/viewtopic.p ... 391#325391stujones wrote:Oh so Hobson is paying him more than Frank then?boxingchat wrote:How about Ricky Hatton - there's one disloyal money grabbing greedy little bastard.

Still think that when it comes to something that a terrestial network wants, Sky's money is nothing. You don't see Sky one trying to poach Eastenders or Coronation Street. Admittedly though, like with other sporting events the terrestial giants might not be "as desperate" as Sky for the services of Hatton.
What my post in this thread though was a response for was BC's implication that Hatton is getting more money with the option he has chosen, this is in stark contrast to what FW's fighters always state - in that he is the best payer in the country.

Fan my arse, and why do I care if he sells out the MEN. I've alway's thought he was a over-rated fighter. Remember Thaxton he bled like a tampax and nearly got beat back then. Hand picked opponents all the way.
Even Zoo came for the cash why else did he come to Manchester?
