Amir Khan needs to change his mindset before his trainer and learn that he should box the ears off people and avoid tear ups where possible.

Well I guess thats why he gets overlooked because people dont actually know fully his CV. Only this weekend he has been in miami winning a world title eliminator with highly ranked argenis mendez, he trained Joan Guzman to beat Ali Funeka in a rematch. The weight issue was Guzmans fault and no one elses, no trainer would have had him on weight that day. He won a USBA title with Tim Coleman and was involved in some of the highest profile fights ever with Ricky Hatton. Guzman chose him over Nasim Richardson after a trial with both so he must have something.

i went to Lee’s session with Guzman - everyone was raving about him, how this was his time etc... he didnt make weight. You say nobody would’ve made him make weight, maybe not, but other trainers may have made him train a bit harder. He looked like he wasn’t going to make weight, and looked like he wasn’t over exerting himself to make weight either. Surely it’s the trainers job to check weigh the fighter and make sure he’s on track. But alas, I’ll give you the weight thing as Guzman is a lazy tw@ and not every trainer has the aptitude to take a hardline in discipline to make sure the weight isnt an issue.

Rciky Hatton – Graham was trainer up until mayweather defeat with Beard doing “some” pad work, no? he then took ricky on for Lazcano, malinnaggi and Pacquiao ? I always had the feeling, and I could be wrong, that it seemed ricky almost trained himself and beard was on board as a type of yes man – again, apologies if im wrong but I seem to recall a lot of flashy pad work being done but I don’t know how much technical expertise was brought to the table.

Im not going to comment on Matt Hatton, who went with beard when his brothwer was with beard (I think) then left to go to Shannon? Neither am I going to comment on his involvement with Coleman and Mendez as I didnt know he was involved with them – he’s their trainer is he, or part of their team? Neither have I seen their fights.

Also, youve named garcia and Perez - thats "an involvment" isnt it - he's never been their trainer has he ?

Lets start with Guzman - Guzman arrived in the UK grossly overweight and Lee brought Kerry Kayes onboard to help with the nutrition. All was on track until they got to the USA when things started to get interfered with. Guzman went to bed one night very close to the weigh in and when he got up he weighed more than he did when he went to bed. So there is only one way that can happen and that was he was sneaking or some one was sneaking him food.

As for the public workout, it was exactly that something lighthearted for the public to get to meet and greet him. Guzman for all he is one of the nicest boxers you will meet is a liability as he seems to have dedication issues as well as medical ones that dont help him with the weight.

As you now know Kerry Kayes was involved do you question his qualifications in getting Guzman to weight?

Ricky Hatton, you are correct in saying that Graham was Rickys trainer up until Malignaggi fight but are you aware that of a 13 week training camp Ricky was trained solely by Lee for 8 of the 13 weeks? He then goes on to perform better than he did in the previous outing.

Matthew Hatton, had his best win against Ben Tackie under Lee when again he was trained solely by Lee. Lee and Matt split due to him going to train Guzman.

Coleman trained around the Mayweathers his whole life and ended up training alongside Lee during the Malignaggi camp and he was impressed so took Lee on full time. He rates Lee higher than Roger but because he lived in america and there isnt much money in fights it was hard for him and Lee to continue working together.

Mendez over 300 amateur fights and only lost 12 has worked with Lee for the last 2yrs on and off, went to South Africa and beat Baloyi in his home country before going to fight Salgado in mexico for the IBF, lost on a narrow points decision but that was due to his lazyness in the first few rounds. He will get his chance again against Salgado in November.

And yes as for Perez, Lee had a stint training all the cubans in ireland, not sure how many fights they had with him but I know they remained undefeated.

Its a shame cause all of Lees success have been with fighters who live in other countries apart from rising star evans.

It is hard with a family in the UK to keep going back and forward.

He is also very good at teaching defence which is what amir khan needs

Home grown obvious choices as Ive mentioned in other threads …

Adam Booth – needs no introduction. I think he could give Amir the one to one training he craves. Also, has experience in big fights having taken David Haye and George Groves and instilled his gameplan and training methods into them.

Enzo Calzaghe – everyone slags old enzo but from a catchment area which is basically a small valley in Wales Enzo took joe, Enzo Macc, Gavin Rees to world titles. And moulded Nathan Cleverly into a potential world class fighter. You could argue Nathan has not improved a great deal since leaving Enzo and allowing his father to take over. Enzo also had Locket (world title challenger) and Bradley Pryce in his stable.

Domestic ones Ive not mentioned
Mckraken – Froch has September bout so not sure how Olympics would interfere.
Shannon – on his door step, and again would get attention he craves in the gym whilst also being trained by a hard taskmaster – not on a par with other choices but over Lee Beard, yeah probably.

As a couple of wild cards how about Mayweather Snr, Eric Brown or Nazim Richardson (also devout muslim although I don’t know what he’s doing post Mosley).

I could name a few more I’d PERSONALLY go for over beard – but as I did say in my post “or did he and I don’t know about it?”

On Guzamn – heard all the stories about going to bed waking up etc… and indeed it was a public workout and I’d never accuse kerry kays of not knowing what he was doing, however, if it was clear / suspected to me that he wasn’t looking like making weight it surely mustve been to his trainer? But as mentioned its hard to put all the blame on Lee / Kerry as Guzman is / was a lazy fecker.

Mendez – again taken on a world class amateur – be interesting to see how that pans out.

Cubans – some token training in ireland.

What is hard for me to pick out from the rest of your post is a situation / scenario where Lee went into a fight or took a fighter and changed what he did. See Roach for Khan at the start for example. I dont believe he did so with ricky and I don’t believe the ben Tackie argument stands up with Matt either – I think Matt would’ve outboxed Ben just as his borther and many before him did. Tackie was also coming off the back of 4 defeats going into the Hatton fight all had outboxed him to a points victory. I dont think tackie had a meaningful win that I know of since stopping teddy reid in 2002 (before he fought tszyu and haton).


Good luck to him. Every days a school day and I now know a little more. If he’s serisou about what hes doing he needs to settle with a fighter and make a name for himself not flit between here the us and picking up this one and dropping that one.

I think McCracken has a deal with GB that means he can only work with froch outside of the GB squad, maybe true maybe not

Matt Hatton has left Shannon and i doubt Ricky would be sparring Khan in camp. Ricky is training his own fighters now.

Id put money on him not training Hatton should he come back. What are you basing that on? When Ricky said it a while back? If so, id say a lot has changed since then.

Matthew Hatton left Shannon after his defeat to Kell Brook and Aaron is now training with Stevie Bell at Kerry Kayes gym.

Not being funny mate but it would appear you need to have a better knowledge of who these trainers are and what they have been up to before you can compare them.

You also said Lee Beard was a yes man, I can assure you that is not the case, if he had of been a yes man he would have had an easier career than he has.

You have also not heard much about him because he keeps a low profile unlike some other UK trainers who want to be more famous than their fighters!
