Gabriel Ruelas vs Freddie Liberatore for the WBC super featherweight title - that was an awful, one sided beating that lasted just two rounds.
Re: Worst beatings in Boxing
Too bad Ruelas/Garcia wasn't that short. Nelson also gave Ruelas a bad beating in their rematch.Fat Git wrote:Gabriel Ruelas vs Freddie Liberatore for the WBC super featherweight title - that was an awful, one sided beating that lasted just two rounds.

Sonny Liston vs Chuck Wepner
reporter: "Is Wepner the bravest man you ever faced?"
Liston: "no, his manager is"
Apparently Wepner needed 100 stitches to his face after the fight.

Re: Worst beatings in Boxing
ESPN had a Wepner documentary where Wepner described the Liston fight. There were hilarious sound effects as he described how his nose got bashed in and how blood was spurting all over.IRLangmaid25 wrote:Brave? More like crazy I reckon.Knucklez wrote:Sonny Liston vs Chuck Wepner

BW, I was ringside at that fight between Ike Williams and Beau Jack in Philly in 1948...In the 6th round the murderous punching Williams opened up on Beau Jack pinning Beau against the ropesBarryWashington wrote:Ike Williams TKO6 over Beau Jack (1948)
Vitali Klitschko over Shannon Briggs
Mike McCallum beat the shit out of Michael Watson
there are plenty more
with Beau Jack's hands behind him tangled in the ropes...Helpless and UNABLE to fall Jack took
volleys of punches, unable to block the blows of fall to the canvas..I, a youngster along with the crowd SCREAMED for the referee to stop the bout, and even Ike Williams stopped punching beseeching the ref to call a halt, but the ref told him to continue the fight..How Beau Jack survived I know not, and finally the ref called a halt to the slaughter, averting a fatality in the ring...A short time later the great Beau Jack kod Eric Boon of England...Many years later I spoke to Emile Griffith before his bout with Kid Paret, and Emile told a few of us 'I KEEL HIM",refering to Paret, who called Emile a Fag in Spanish...
Well Kid Paret did die from an attack by the ropes, but Beau Jack survived. FATE...

Oscar De La Hoya beat the daylights out of Ricardo Mayorga as Mayorga taunted everything about De la Hoya from his sexuality, to his wife, kids etc in the build up to the fight so the Golden Boy stored up for night and beat him senseless as a result.Rover wrote:Oscar and Tito both beat the daylights out of Mayorga,

I don't know if it's been mentioned, but Cotto v Judah was brutal. I just watched it on YouTube. It started in the second, Judah had a good third, then miguel resumed the beating from the fourth until the stoppage. It was almost painful to watch at times.
For all the talk of Judahs skills, no one ever talks about his horrible defence, sure he's an explosive offenceive fighter when he actually throws punches, but Cotto was hitting him with near everything that he threw. Zabs got a decent chin though. For the most part he took his beating like a man

Re: Worst beatings in Boxing
Are we talking about complete blow outs, or just bad thrashings regardless of rankings or level?
For me one of the scariest blow outs was Herbie Hide versus Mitch Hicks, I would have thought Hicks' head would have been knocked off his shoulders from Hide's uppercut. As far as a thrashing goes, can anyone really beat Dempsey versus Willard?

Re: Worst beatings in Boxing
talking about beatings:
Manny Pacquiao vs Miguel Cotto...I was rooting for Pac, but Pac gave Cotto a brutal beating that I was begging loudly "Stop the fight, stop the fight, stop the damn fight!"
Rocky Marciano vs Archie Moore...Moore put Marciano down in the first, I believe, but after the Rock got up, it was all over for Moore. Moore got a shellacking beating forn. 9 rounds. Marciano's last fight.
Rocky Marciano vs Joe Louis....A crude fight. Ver sad to see the great Louis ending this way. He almost got out the ring in round 8.
Kid Gavilan vs Gil Turner...I hate the referee on this one. What the hell he was thinking? It was a brutal bout, and was very close until the ending when Gavilan poured so many shots to Turner's head that the stupid referee did not come quick to stop it. It was a very frightening ending to see. This was probably Gavilan's gretest performance. After this fight, Turner was never the same again.
Wilfredo Gomez vs Carlos Zarate...This was another beatdown. What was Zarate's thinking? He made 2 big mistakes. Go to Puerto Rico and challenge Gomez and came to the fight sick.
Salvador Sanchez vs Wilfredo Gomez...Gomez got a taste of his own medicine. His cheekbones were broken, his eyes were closed and blood were dripping on his mouth and nose. He got knockdown in the first, and got torn apart in th 8th. It was a magnificent display of finesse by Sanchez. His greatest victory and one of boxing's all-time greatest performances
Joe Frazier vs Jerry Quarry I....Smoking Joe was too much for Quarry. Way too much.
Thomas Hearns vs James Hutchings...After demolishing the great Roberto Duran in only 2 rounds, Hearns totally ahnilliated a very inferior foe even though he was as tall as Hearns. It was a brutal and freightening beating I prayed for Hutching's life.
George Foreman vs Joe Frazier I...Of course, everybody remembers that one.

Never the same was hemugabi wrote:Tysons brutalisation of Ruddock the second time (even tho it was one of those close but clear decisons and hardly a shutout) was pretty severe.
Ruddock went from being a 27 year old in the prime of his life to a shot fighter ruined inside and outside. The disintegration was immediate. He looked very poor beating Greg Page and against Lewis he didnt even throw a single smash in the couple of rounds he was demolished. True some of it was his being ripped off by murad muhammed.
I saw Ruddock fight Morrison on KOTV HD the other night and his hands were so slow, the power and snap drained. A lack of confidence and workrate and of course the movement he had circa the late 80s was long gone.
In a nutshell the Tyson beating was a very bad one.

Re: Worst beatings in Boxing
How about these other beatings?
Floyd Patterson vs Ingemar Johansson I...I think this was the worst beating Patterson ever took. It was a thrashing.
Roberto Duran vs Ken Buchanan....I have never seen fighter that ferociuos. Duran was all over Buchanan. The Hands of Stone beat Buchanan like if Buchanan stole his paycheck or slept with his wife or something. Buchanan had an extraordinary chin of all the punches he took. The referee counted a knockdown on Buchanan in round one and Buchanan could not believe it. He had a black eye and a broken nose, bleeding around the eyes. He was a mess. Then, he gets a shot to the balls?...Oh man, it was not a good night for him. It was a long and terrible night. A nightmare.
Muhammad Ali vs Floyd Patterson I...Why Patterson's corner let him come out for more brutal punishment. Ali punished Floyd for 12 rounds. Patterson suffered a bad back.

Re: Worst beatings in Boxing
More beatdowns:
1. Carlos Ortiz vs Sugar Ramos I...It was a beating so big that referee, the great Billy Conn, had enough.
2. Carlos Monzon vs Jose "Mantequilla" Napoles....King Carlos was clearly too big for Mantequilla. It was a mismatch from start to finish. Mantequilla did not know what to do with Monzon's jab. It was a fight as a man fighting a child.
3. Jose "Mantequilla" Napoles vs Curtis Cokes I.... Cokes paid the price of Mantequilla's long frustrations of not getting a title shot sooner. In the mid 60s, Mantequilla was ducked for years by the lightweight, jr welter and welterweight champions and contenders of the time. The beating was one sided.
4. Ruben Olivares vs Lionel Rose...The beginning reign of one the greatest fighters that Mexico ever had. A classic KO by a great KO artist. Olivares was still unbeaten in 53 fights with an amazing record of 51 knockouts!
5. Mike Tyson vs Tyrell Biggs... Biggs had the reach and height advantage and still could not take advantage of his physical traits. Tyson said he heard Biggs cry like a girl everytime he hit him on the ribs. Biggs was not ready for Tyson. He only had 17 fights.
6. Dwight Braxton vs Matthew Saad Muhammad II.... The last great bout of Saad Muhammad. Very painful to see him end this way. What a warrior he was.
7. Marvin Hagler vs Alan Minter... A year before in 1979, Hagler was snubbed by the judges when he challenged middleweight champ Vito Antuofermo in a fight ending in a draw. This time, Hagler flew to London, England and made sure that the title did not end in the judges hands. Hagler destroyed Minter, both eyes were cut and full of blood. It was a total bloodbath. After the stoppage, British fans started to throw bottles into the ring.
8. Marvin Hagler vs Vito Antuofermo II.... This time, Hagler the champion, again did not wanted to end it at the judges hands. It was another bloodbath and the referee had to stop it.
9. Jack Johnson vs Jim J. Jeffries.... In a sunny afternoon of a 4th of July, Johnson embarrassed and humiliated former heavyweight champ Jeffries for 15 rounds. One of boxing's greatest beatings.
10. Jack Johnson vs Tommy Burns.... Burns paid the price of Johnson's long frustrations for a title fight. Johnson became the first black fighter to win the world heavyweight championship. The police saw enough and had to stop the fight.
11. Muhammad Ali vs Bob Foster.... At the beginning, the great Ali was like playing with the great Foster. But after Foster gave him a cut in the eye round 5, Ali went to business. Foster in went down 4 times in one round. It was a total mismatch. I asked myself, why the commissions let this fight to happen when Foster was outweight by 40 pounds?

Other big beatings:
Floyd Mayweather Jr vs Diego Corrales.... This fight was one sided. It was perhaps, Pretty Boy's greatest performance.
Larry Holmes vs Gerry Cooney.... This is a case of an amateur (Cooney), fighting a real professional (Holmes) in his prime. It was a total mismatch.

Ref should've stopped it.Il Duce wrote:Larry Holmes TKO 10 over Muhammad Ali.
This fight should have never taken place to begin with.
Many people to blame for this, as Muhammad Ali would have received the 'same' fight purse whether his
corner stopped it after Round 1 or 10.
It was a slaughter, and Ali's corner should have stopped it after Round 6, as the former Champion had
nothing and went into the ring with nothing in his arsenal. His only hope, was that Larry would lose control
and 'punch himself out' trying to flatten Muhammad. Larry way too smart for that foolish thought.
Same ref as Mancini/Kim a couple years later; killed himself.

I wouldnt say it was a mismatch, Cooney gave Holmes one of his toughest fights during his championship reign. Round 10 of this fight was probably second to the 15th round of Holmes-Norton, as the most savage of his career.elmersalsa wrote:Other big beatings:

Holmes floored Cooney in the second, and took it easy on him to carry him for a few rounds.
