Some Great Fights That Should Have Happened But Never Did

Coro/Hagler. Think Marv would've won the title in 78 instead of 80.

Re: Some Great Fights That Should Have Happened But Never Did
I think had the fight have been on the table, Tito might not have entered the Middleweight tournament and been willing to take on Shane at 154...whether Shane would've been willing to come up to 154 to meet him in 2001 is debatable. Toney-Hopkins I believe was being talked about at a catchweight of 185 or something like that...so I would expect that to have been the agreed upon weight.Rover wrote:What weight for Tito/Mosley and Toney/BHop?gilgamesh wrote:Tito/Mosley (sometime between 2001 and 2004, the earlier the better though)
Barrera/Morales IV (I'd watch these guys fight a dozen times, maybe not should've, but definitely one I'd want if only for my own greediness of seeing fierce combat between bitter rivals)
Toney/Hopkins (it was being discussed briefly in 2003 and I would've loved to see it come off)
Roy Jones Jr/B-Hop II (in 2002 after the "60/40 I'll kick yo ass" interview on the HBO doubleheader would've been ideal, both still at the peak of their abilities)
Castillo/Corrales III (damn JLC missing weight, I was so over the moon excited for this one at the time, damn shame we didn't get it)
Marquez/Maidana (if these two met at 140 pounds anytime between 2009-2011 it would've been a scorcher)
I'm especially curious about Tito/Mosley because by 2001 Tito was a middle. Shane wasn't nearly as good even at jr. middle. Those two juuuuuust missed each other at welter. Shane didn't go up to jr. middle until 03 when Tito was temporarily retired. Tito came back again--but at middle.
Re: Some Great Fights That Should Have Happened But Never Did
I think Tito would've still gone for the middle championship rather than face Mosley. Oscar moved to 54 in 01; Tito didn't stick around to face him, and he was a bigger star than Shane by far.
I think Tito wanted to be welter and middle champ. Unfortunately, there was a fellow named Bernard waiting...

Finito/Vorapin in a minimumweight unification.
I still think Finito would clearly win, but it'd have been a lot better than that farce on the Tito/Vargas undercard.

Some Hamed fights at super bantam (where he was talking about fighting for a title until he moved up to fight Robinson):
Barrera
Daddy Wilf
Bungu
Zaragoza
I think 122 would've been better for his legacy (at least in 95-96) until he fought Medina and then Johnson about 5 months later.

Niida/Kyowa (or Akakura).
Calderon/Kyowa.
Shame Eagle retired after so few fights. His first loss to Bustos was due to a shoulder injury, too. Got a lot done in 20 fights, though.

Re: Some Great Fights That Should Have Happened But Never Did
Barkley had left middle by 92. Julian was no super middle, and he certainly was no light heavy.

Gotta get Guzman in here:
at 122:
Pac, Larios, or Vazquez
at 126:
JMM
at 130:
Pac, JMM, MAB, or Valero.
At 135:
Campbell (signed and ready to go, but dumbo Guzman missed weight for the first of several times).
Incredible waste of talent.

The window would've been quite small for that, as you point out. Curry beat McCrory in December 85, Curry fought Rodriguez in March 86, Hagler fought Mugabi in March 86, and Curry lost to Honeygan in September 86.
Curry proved nothing at middleweight. Hagler easy for me. My criterion for this topic is guys in the same division at the same time (or guys who fought a good fight and who should've rematched immediately, unless one retired like Chiquita or Lewis).

Alvarez/Arce in 02 or 03 at 108. By the time they fought, it was way too late in Alvarez's career--and above his optimal weight (though he came in overweight anyway).
