I love how Johnny Nelson twice failed to a win a world title so instead on the third attempt opted for a trusty WBO belt and had a long 'reign' defending against tomato cans.

What a champion!

I visited a friend of mine at a sheffield hospital who sadly was in a coma, been a boxing fan I bought him a copy of the Nelson v De Leon fight,during the 4th round he arose from his bed and switched it off .......:) :)

There was a very similar thread last week and Nelson was over represented; he had a few bouts that were stinkers but he was a very decent puncher at a lower level and paid the price for his passivity by being frozen out for years.

Some seem to have a problem with him working on Ringside; I can imagine some of it is jealousy, he's made a success of himself, from the ground and after many setbacks.

Pretty recently the Bradley v Alexander bout had me wondering why I was bothering to watch.

Don't think it can possibly get worse than Broadhurst- Haskins but Haskins international fight in a Moroccan shopping centre was pretty dull as well, though he looked fairly effective in that one

I still can't believe so many people have seen Nelson v De Leon. Has anyone actually tracked it down to find out if it is as bad as people make out?

I'm pretty sure it was live on ITV, It sticks in my mind as it was a couple of days before my 16th Birthday. We had piled into a pals house who's mam and dad had gone out.

With some cans of Ace larger and bottles of Thunderbird we settled down and watched the worst fight I have ever seen.

A memorable event.

Would seem right but i'm sure you get some people mentioning it who would have been toddlers at the time, meaning they must have watched it since. I'm 31 now and can't remember whether I would have watched it or not and was certainly not going to seek it out after hearing about it (which is why I am not clicking on those links Carlos!).
I'm curious if people did watch it knowing it to be one of the worst fights of all time. I do remember Nelson v Jones and if the De Leon and Warring fights put that to shame then I'll avoid them like the plague

Oh yes! ITV showed DeLeon's fight with Uruguayan Jose Maria Flores and that was also awful but I thought Nelson had the style and size to get on top and outbox DeLeon convincingly but during the fight I was screaming at the screen for Nelson to do something - he just wouldn't hit him. It was the month before I joined the army and I was 17 at the time so I remember it well. Virgil Hill vs Ramzi Hassan was an awful bore as well.

so the DeLeon v Nelson fight is so ingrained in our brains that we all remember where we were when watching it, I was at a house party a load of us started to watch it , then it just ended up with me sat there whilst everyone else got on with the party.

Mutley should never fight again after that one. Especially when you look at his Thursday night Gatti rivalling war with Anderson.

Aye- fair to say, though, with his patchy workrate Mutley always had the potential to be involved in poor-ish fights, if he was against someone unwilling to engage. that night, it was Anderson's insane tactic of charging forward into the strikezone for Mutley's tremendous left hook, hands down and throwing punches.

it made for a fantastic spectacle, of course (and atmosphere)

I must admit I'm always surprised by the number of "I was there" "I saw it on TV" comments there are about Nelson's fight with De Leon.
It was in January 1990.
Now on that basis to have any recollection of the fight, you would have had to be at least 12 ?
So if anyone says they remember it well and were born after 1979 I don't believe you !
I was there and as I was well into my thirties I can recall it !
The fight is well documented in Johnny's autobiography.
Whilst not defending the performance at all, I am always bemused by how Johnny always gets flak on threads like this - as if he was the only fighter to put in a piss poor performance in the last 22 years.
Same when we have the repetitive "robberies" threads.
Always the Thompson and Jones fights come up.
I know it's a bit off topic, but why do you feel Johnny always comes in for this intense scrutiny when others get off Scott free ?
How about giving him credit for getting on his bike, ducking no one, and fighting as the away fighter in Denmark, Germany, Virginia USA, South Africa, France, Australia, Belgium, New Zealand, Thailand, Brazil, Las Vegas USA.
Half of our modern era fighters get a nose bleed leaving their County let alone their Country !
Anyone else got that list of venues on their resume ?
Look it was a stinker, Johnny knows it, everyone knows it.
Time to get into the history books and pull out some other examples ?
There will be hundreds.
