I know what you mean about the walk of nerves. Football results are the worst for me. I have to cover up the whole screen with a newspaper, then edge down to the team in question, look at how many goals the team they were playing scored, then at this point I either swear mightily or rub my hands with glee, then look at how many goals the team I've backed have scored, and often

gawd damn.

While we're on the subject, anyone fancy speculating as to what the odds would be if Calzaghe and Lacy ever manage to fight this side of the next ice age?

I could be way off, but thinking from a British bookies/Joe unbeaten sort of a view, do you think you could get Lacy at evens or over?

I suspect bookies would do the shameful thing they occasionally do and have both runners in a two-horse race at a shade of odds-on.

jonmothepure - sorry it took a couple of days to get back to you. I was on holiday and not using computers much.

Regarding your betting/laying example and tennis...the example you give about backing Federer at 1/20 then laying him at 1/40 is bang on. don't forget Betfair take 3-5% commission too. I tend not to wait too long before making the lay to cover my stake - I got caught out being greedy once!!

As you rightly point out, the problem is what to do if Federer started losing. If this happened to me I'd wait until I'm sure Federer would lose then go big on the guy beating him. This is very risky though. It's probably best to just make small backs on the opponent and minimize losses!!

Risky game this backing and laying. Read 'Game set and matched' by Iain Fletcher. It tells you how he won (and lost) betting, on amongst other things, tennis.
