It's ironic how Danny used to struggle to motivate himself when he was in his prime, would suffer incredibly with pre-fight nerves, and admitted he was pretty much pushed into boxing by his father, and now that he's washed up he can't quit.
I've been thinking this myself. He said in interviews it was something he let himself be pushed into, rather than doing because he liked it. Also he used to come in with Mr. Kipling related weight issues to a lot of his fights. He never sounded that bothered.

Now he should be retiring and writing his autobiography, he's over in Europe trying to prove he can still fight because he's not allowed to fight in Britain any more. Seems odd.

Good point, I heard him on a 5 live interview after the Vitali fight talking about the reluctant fighter he was. There was also a load of spiel about being a Muslim and fighting being against the religion, he knew it was wrong and would make up for it when he retired. All very contradictory really.

Has he blown his cash does anyone know? Surely if he had put the money he earned from his big fights safely away he could do anything he wanted which didn't involved getting regularly beaten up?

I doubt that even his friends know the truth about his finances. How many of your friends do you know the precise financial status of? Danny has maybe got another 50 years or more to get through on what he's earned from the game and what he can earn after he finally does hang them up, which is likely to be a relatively low income at best if you look at the majority of other 40 something boxers hitting the world of work for pretty much the first time in their lives.

Edit: spelling error amended, no doubt caused by too many shots to the head.

Dominic Negus has posted that he's fighting Danny on June 22nd. Not quite sure on this one, seems a long way away to be talking about...perhaps he's got the date wrong??

He fights on unlicenced shows doesn't he. It must be the only way Danny can box in the UK now.

That's right. He got his license revoked, didn't he? I don't think he had a licensed professional fight since fighting Audley on the BBC.

Mark Potter will be eyeing up the rematch. He's another unlicensed fighter, and probably the best heavy boxer. He'd probably best Danny. Very sad!

The Fight is unlicensed and will be at the Trox, Danny has Kids in Private school and has to pay the Bills. He is getting decent money. Mad to think someone that KO'd Tyson is fighting on a unlicensed bill :o :-?

I didn't know that but it explains a thing or two. You can spunk some serious money on the private school scene. It's not just the fees either, when you factor everything in it's enough to make you literally cry.

I'm sure Danny could get some well paid security work minding celebrities or something? He doesn't have to work a door. He doesn't have to do what he's doing now.

Why is sending your kids to a private school a noble thing to do?
Because, although they'll be plummy little twots who he'll have hardly anything in common with as adults, they will probably get good grades, achieve well and be employed in good jobs. If he sent them to the local sink comprehensive they might end up blazing all day and nicking cars. He's trying to give them the best possible start in life. That's noble.

I would send my phantom non existent children to private school if I had the money. I went to comprehensive and did OK for myself, but I was brighter than I thought I was and only achieved after I left. The main thing I got from school was a menacing working class accent that makes people to ask me to repeat myself when I'm on the phone and causes middle class dog walkers to jump out of their skin when I say hello to them of an evening.

I'm more streetwise than if I didn't go to grammar or private. That's the only plus point. Do you think it's a noble thing to send your kid to a comprehensive?

If you can just afford the school fees but can't afford for your kids to participate in trips or school activities or spend time with school friends etc and you live in a 'working class' environment then sending them to private school may isolate them further - not everyone who goes to a private school gets the best grades and a plummy accent opens the most doors only in certain areas.

But Danny has beaten Mike Tyson and fought Vitali Klitschko. I'm sure, when he had those kids, he wasn't poor and lived in a decent house. I doubt his kids have ever been 'working class' kids in the first place. I don't know how old they are (I'm assuming they're secondary school age) but they have probably been in expensive schools all their lives.

I never said that every kid who gets to go to private school does well. I'm saying they are more likely to.
mercman wrote:True. Working-class children who find themselves in a private school often do quite badly. More often than not they are ostracised and bullied by the other kids, and many of the teachers look down on them too. For many parents, it's basically an expensive mistake and they would be far better off using the money to enhance their children's lives in other ways - music lessons, educational trips, books, holidays, hobbies etc. And by spending more time with their children, reading to them, talking to them, engaging them in constructive activities.
Is this factually based or is it just made up off the top of your head? I'm sure the theoretical kid you've just made up above who gets bullied at public school would never get bullied at a comprehensive school, amongst his 'natural peers' Maybe he get's bullied because he's a posh little ponce who's mum and dad are rich and he's a speccy bookworm who plays the f*cking piano?

And there will always be some teachers who will find reasons to look down on you no matter what.

Not everyone has a terrible time of it at a comprehensive school and not all private schools are full of 'Goodbye Mr Chips' memories. There are lots of ways to have a positive force on your kids lives - a private education may be one of them and maybe not - most of those that send their kids to private school are not having their brains scrambled in order to do it; (as Danny Williams is).

mercman wrote: Well, all my kids go to state schools and I'm happy with that. I could probably afford to send my kids to private schools but, for various reasons, I have chosen not to. Leaving aside any ethical questions about trying to buy social advantage, not all comprehensives are 'sink' schools as you describe them. In fact, many state schools are really good, including the ones my kids go to. To equate comprehensive schools with 'blazing all day and nicking cars' seems to be an example of extreme negative stereotyping.

There is, however, a far more practical reason why sending kids to a fee-paying school is often not a good idea. Unless you have the connections and money (£25K plus per child) to get your kids into one of the really top public schools, many private schools simply aren't that good. It's a common mistake most working-class people make. Just because they are being charged they assume that they are buying their kids a better education when, in reality, many private schools are actually quite poor. They often employ unqualified teachers, their buildings and facilities are sometimes pretty poor, and there are loads of 'failing' private schools. Bullying is often a deep-rooted part of the culture. Loads close every year.

People equate private schooling with Eton and Harrow, which are very rich institutions (but which I detest), but many private schools are really poor and basically rip off ordinary people who don't know any better. It's the untold story.
Sorry I missed this post. You're lucky that your kids have a good state school to go to :TU: I hope when I do have kids I will have one too, because I will never be able to afford to send them to a decent public school (and I will qualify that by saying 'decent'. I wouldn't send my kid to a school where the grade average was sh*t regardless of whether I had to pay for it or not, so in that respect I agree with you).

As for the bit highlighted in bold, well done for spotting that that was exactly what it was: an extreme example of negative stereotyping for comic effect. But then again, that's what a few of the kids I went to school with were like.

Well from my experience 'so far' I'd disagree. I think it can work that way if you go from state to private and you're already a bit behind the rest but it depends on the child maybe better to go in from nursery/reception mine did ,they love it and are getting very good grades 'up to now' Sons just gone up to high school and pressure has gone up a few notches but he's doing well and still enjoying it.
I went to a comp and it was a fornicating shit conveyor belt of a school, a complete waste of time in the end but of course I'm sure there are some good ones out there. I know teachers in both state and private and I've known a couple jack in their careers after teaching in state high schools
As for ethical reasons? life isn't a level playing board why should education be any different? Holidays are lovely but they don't help you with grades. I've not been on a proper holiday in 15 years it also helps if your other half works at the school BIG discount otherwise they wouldn't be going there.

Did you not read the bit where I said I went to a comprehensive? Actually, I read books at school and played drums and guitar, got taken on holiday by my mum in the summer. I could have been a proper little ponce, but comprehensive school toughened me up and I fell in with a bad crowd. I was an awful teenager, got into trouble and brought the police to the doorstep etc, and it took me years to finally get back on track. I've always wondered what I would've been like if I'd have just taken my 11+ and gone to grammar. I was bright enough to do it but too lazy at the time. Conversely, once I had sorted myself out one of the reasons I think the staff like me at art college (and I went to one of the best in the country) was that I was 'working class' and a bit rough around the edges.

I would not like my children to be the proper little prat that I was.

Though being such a 'prat' has caused you grief and angst hasn't it also given you a particular view of life? There are people who do' everything' the 'right' way and life is good and easy for them. They, (from experience) have no understanding of how life can be and have little emapthy for others less able or fortunate though.
