Wilfredo Gomez v. WBA champs.

Post by Rover »

There were quite a few WBA champs during Gomez's reign:
Soo-Hwan Hong
Ricardo Cardona
Leo Randolph
Sergio Victor Palma
Leo Cruz (whom Gomez KO'd earlier in a title defense).
Was there ever talk of a unification with the first four, and which one would've put up the best fight?
Palma for me.

Soo-Hwan Hong-Late KO
Ricardo Cardona-Ko 10th round or so
Leo Randolph--KO about six round or so
Sergio Victor Palma--Wide UD
Leo Cruz--As you said, already KO'd him. Cruz was pretty tough, but Gomez would have gotten him around the 10th the next time

IMO, guys like Randolph and Cardona may have given him some difficultly early, but Gomez was too strong for them. Palma was a tough, strong mother, and that would have kept him in the fight, but he didn't have near Gomez's skills.

He'd have beaten all of them handily.

Agreed, though I think Palma may have made it the distance like Giacomino said.

Possible, but he'd do it by running. And he wasn't a big runner.

Leo Randolph would last the distance.

Highly doubt that. Dropped by Cardona; stopped by Palma (not a huge puncher). Gomez would get him.

IMO, he would be the least likely of those mentioned to last to the half-way point. Gomez was too strong and Randolph too inexperienced as a pro to keep Bazooka off him. He never fought anyone as a pro remotely in Gomez's class

Agree with you. No matter what WBA champ at the time of his reign, (1977-83) would have cope with his agressive and overwhelming style. Gomez was so good for that weight class. He did not had an opponent that could handle him.

Looking at that list, Gomez would have beaten all of them!

Just rewatched Palma v Randolph again. Probably should have been stopped in the 1st. Had Palma been a big hitter, it wouldn't have lasted two minutes. Gomez v Randolph would have been HOF pro vs amateur

Was Palma/Randolph televised in the States?

Can't remember. I had seen a few earlier Randolph fights and was surprised at the time how easily Palma beat hm.

Yes,

Nationally Televised Fights for Leo Randolph

* David Capo (Madison Square Garden Network)
* Daryl Jones (USA Network)
* Oscar Muniz (USA Network)
* Tony Cisneros (USA Network)
* Baby Kid Chocolate (USA Network)
* Jose Luis Batista (CBS)
* Tony Rocha (USA Network)
* Ricardo Cardona (ABC)
* Sergio Palma (ABC)

Leo defeated Ricardo Cardona for the WBA Championship, mainly because Ricardo struggled to make weight,
and was fighting on fumes and weakened legs from the 8th Round on.

Sergio Palma, was a dangerous fighter early, who had better than average power - and was more of a
complete professional than Leo Randolph was.
Do you know which channel (Palma/Randolph)?
