dick mctaggart

Post by duck »

dick mctaggart of scotland is way out on his own ,nobody in the world comes remotely close, or ever will ,he only lost 22 bouts out of 650,which he describes as 22 bad decisions, when he fought he often fought mon, tue, wed, thu, fri, the weigh in was on monday and that done for the full week, olympic gold medal, val barker trophy, european champion etc holds more titles and trophys than any other boxer, his record will stand for all time as no boxer would ever be able to have that number of bouts in this day and age

Breland takes the cake at 110-1-0, and avenged the only loss early on in his pro career. :TU:

Re: Clint Jackson

Post by Nile4000 »

Jukejar wrote:Clint Jackson, the captain of the famous 1976 Olympic Boxing Team, used to be refered to as the "most decorated" amatuer boxer in US history. I know he had an outstanding record but I don't know the particulars. He didn't win the Gold at Montreal, and his pro career had some exciting moments but ultimately fizzled, which is probably why he hasn't been remembered in this forum. Even at the end of his career boxing scribes would mention his stellar amateur record and the general belief was that he over extended his amateur experience and consequently burned-out before turning pro. But I'm sure some folks still remember Clint, especially anyone who fought him in his heyday.
What I do remember about Clint is that he won the National Golden Gloves and National AAU titles at Welterweight three straight years, highly impressive, and kayoed Mike McCallum.

I agree with Breland's being among the best at 110-1 because that record is probably accurate and ended with a gold medal. I remember Larry Merchant on HBO saying Courage Tshabalala was 83-1 and an amatuer with 82 KO's. If anyone has seen him fight as a pro, I doubt this could be possible.

Best Amateur Records

Post by boxinghead »

:box: It's easy to look at an amateur record and think it is great, but do you judge an amateur boxing career by the number of wins to losses, or the number of National titles and accomplishments. Any amateur can box among his local neighborhood and build up wins. Majority of amateur bouts are handpicked, but National titles are not. So if a boxer is 100-49, but has seven National titles, where does he rank?

I'm sure at least 90% of the records you mentioned aren't accurate. I know for sure the following records aren´t:
Yaras72 wrote: 158-2 Juan Carlos Gomez (CUBA)
168-4 Jeremy Williams (USA)
100-5 Fernando Vargas (USA)
209-12 Jeff Lacy (USA)
255-12 Angel Herrera (CUBA)
I have seen many of these fighters as amateurs losing over and over again. I know Juan Carlos Gomez personally and know he fought a lot of times, winning and losing against Dihosvany Vega, Ramon Garbey and Angel Espinosa. I'm sure he has near 20 defeats. Nine of them appear in this partly record of his: http://www.geocities.com/pedrinet/gomez.html

Jeremy Williams I've seen being KO'ed against russian Andrei Kurniavka and losing twice to Montell Griffin. He was also KO'ed by russian Sergey Klokov. That's four right there. I'm sure he has quite a few losses more.

Fernando Vargas only five losses? Here you have seven.
Mike Bojorquez (1992)
Talget Kalimor, KAZ (1994)
Luis Perez Deyne, PUR (1995)
Jose Luis Cruz Felix, MEX (1995)
Hector Vinent, CUB (1995)
David Palac (1996)
Marian Simion, ROM (1996)

Angel Herrera only 12 losses in his long career? Here's 17 and I'm sure there are some more http://www.geocities.com/pedrinet/herrera.html

Asking a boxer about his amateur record is like asking a 18-year old boy how many girls he slept with. Both probably will add a few victims :D :TU:

Vince Shomo had an Amateur Boxing Record of something like 651-4 with most of his wins coming by stoppage. He use to box every week and sometimes 2 or 3 times a week.

Amateur records are highly suspect. Heck, even pro records can be.

What about current U.S. amateurs? I know some guys that are doing very well only have 20-50 bouts, while other guys have 200+ bouts.

I know some boxers have been boxing for over a decade and in some cases for about 15 years. If a boxer boxes 10 times a year, you can see that they can easily get over 100 bouts.

Some boxers travel frequently and get 25 or more bouts in a year. That is how they can have a record with over 200 bouts.
