The fight fell through at the last minute, meaning he was on the weight and had peaked ready for the fight. After that any fighter, especially at world level, needs at least a week off as if they had actually been in the ring, leaving 7 weeks to prepare for a unification fight, only an idiot would take that on. Rees had no choice because he was the challenger and didn't have another route to a world title, so he'd take whatever chance he got.
