If the ref would have continued the count I doubt he would have been fully upright before 10.

Chisora obviously hurt him and gave Scott the willies. Hence the unwilling slow rise at 9 and a bit.

Re: Chisora 4/1 KO
Balls up by the referee. Scott was heading out, but he'd done the right thing by taking a 8 or 9 count, then the ref panics and waves it off, when there was no real reason to...robbing the audience of a real conclusion, instead of the half arsed one we ended up with. A farce.
And Scott's well padded record was well judged by Warren and Dean Tango Powell

No amount of twisting will change the fact that the very evidence before your eyes show that he had risen before the ref could count him out.
The fact that the camera concentrated on the ref and Scott instead of the "victorious" Del Boy , and indeed showed the ref later trying to explain himself shows what a controversial and awful stoppage that was.
No surprises as usual, and I guess nothing to see here.

So he beat the count then.

If he's up before 10 the ref is in the best position to judge if they are able or want to continue.kaiserbill wrote:Final round wrote:Chisora obviously hurt him and gave Scott the willies. Hence the unwilling slow rise at 9 and a bit.Credit to Derrick.

9...9 1/2...whatever, the ref doesn't have to be an ABSOLUTE PEDANT about a count, it's not an exact science, and each 10 count depends on how slow or fast he's talking. Use a bit of common sense

What differences are there?MachoMan09 wrote:Bullshit. Scott did what guys with over 20 years experience in the sport do (in the US) when they get put down. The fight would not have been stopped in America in those circumstances. That's not to suggest Phil made a bad call, it's just that things are done differently here than they are there. Scott should have probably made himself aware of such differences. Still a shambles, though.Final round wrote:Chisora obviously hurt him and gave Scott the willies. He showed every indication, including looking straight at the ref and giving a nod at the ref and his corner, that he was in full control and wanting to continue.palooka wrote:If he's up before 10 the ref is in the best position to judge if they are able or want to continue.kaiserbill wrote:Final round wrote:Chisora obviously hurt him and gave Scott the willies. Re: Chisora 4/1 KO
There are refs in the UK that just ruin the reputation of other refs. We all know the refs that are poor, I bet 99 out of 100 of us all roll our eyes when we have been eagerly waiting for a certain fight and then see certain refs have been nominated to ref. But there are other refs who are announced and I say 'thank god for that.'
Unfortunately for foreigners coming to box here they will see something like last night and feel like all of our refs are naff.

Boxing suffers from this internationally, so I'm at a loss as to why some here seek to defend a terrible stoppage by the ref, unless they look at it purely from a nationalistic viewpoint.
It basically makes the good refs job that much harder, and there are some very good refs around.

Paul Smith tweeted
@PaulSmithJnr: @bigdaddybunce the count is never an issue if you want to get up! His own fault. Show you want to get up, don't say it afterwards.
@PaulSmithJnr: agreed 100% mate. Blame the referee's count not the fact you didn't REALLY wanna get up. Bottle jobs
@PaulSmithJnr: @LIverpoolNorth3 @bigdaddybunce rules don't! It's 8, 9, OUT. There is no ten. If they say TEN then its done with a wave. Fight over

Re: Chisora 4/1 KO
Paul Smith And Derek Chisora have never met.
They also don't box under Frankie Warren.
This must mean he's impartial...

Re: Chisora 4/1 KO
It doesn't mean anything, it's Smiths' opinion; you can't imply that someone with a differing opinion on the stoppage is partial to either Chisora, Warren or British Boxing right or wrong.kaiserbill wrote:Paul Smith And Derek Chisora have never met.

Agree 100% with smith & you could sense Scott wasn't fancying it, I wouldn't call him a bottle job, just think he was feeling the pace
Re: Chisora 4/1 KO
X2. I wouldn't think a fighter would say something like that, I don't remember him using such terms during Price Thompson 2 either.MachoMan09 wrote:Smith shows good potential as a commentator but I think he needs to mature a bit and leave out "bottle job" type comments if he wants to be taken seriously by the grown ups.hurlock wrote:Agree 100% with smith & you could sense Scott wasn't fancying it, I wouldn't call him a bottle job, just think he was feeling the pace
Re: Chisora 4/1 KO
That's where Scott went wrong, in the US they are far more likely to allow a fighter to continue than here, where referees are in general, more safety conscious. While Scott didn't seem to be hurt, if a fighter doesn't rise at 8, usually it means they're hurt or don't particularly want to continue. As for Paul Smith, he's right, typically a referee will reach 9 and 10 will be signified by him waving the fight off. As a side note, Russ Anber is really lucky he's not licensed by the BBBofC, because if he was he'd definitely be called in front of the board to explain his actions after the fight ended, probably resulting in a fine coming his way.MachoMan09 wrote:The difference is, in the States if you appear to have your wits about you and you start to get up at nine, they generally let you box on e.g. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=imZaiGJgbsw.Final round wrote:What differences are there?MachoMan09 wrote:

Re: Chisora 4/1 KO
Most fighters who don't want to carry on eventually rise close to 10 and the ref calls it off.

Re: Chisora 4/1 KO
Bizarre stoppage IMO, bordering on fishy. Considering Malik was unbeaten in 36 fights and going for a title shot he was very blasé that he lost in that manner, almost like he didn't care. I can't imagine many fighters in his position being so unbothered by it.

Same old British refereeing shenanigans.
A stoppage worthy of Terry O'Connor.
Disgraceful.

Re: Chisora 4/1 KO
Nothing contraversial there for me,seems simple,Scott got knocked down, was too slow getting up especially as his head looked clear, ref had no choice but to stop it,a proffesional boxer should know you have to be on your feet by 8,rules is rules, its not the refs fault, dont hate the player, hate the game,Scott didnt fancy it after the right hand put him down, even his protests were half hearted
in regards to Buster Douglas and Gatti etc,the refs were in the wrong in those cases, thats not Phil Edwards fault, whether the rules should be changed to give the fighter the full 10 seconds to get up,thats another arguement but at the end of the day who will Scott be angry with in his heart of hearts, himself thats who

Re: Chisora 4/1 KO
Correct. Phil Edwards enforced the rules correctly, to the letter of the law.
However, the issue is whether he should have shown common sense on such a marginal call and let a fighter who appeared unhurt and was winning the fight carry on.
