TONY THOMPSON OFFERED BIG MONEY CLASH WITH HUGHIE FURY SEP 2
Re: TONY THOMPSON OFFERED BIG MONEY CLASH WITH HUGHIE FURY SEP 2
Can you imagine how embarrasing it would be for Price if Hughie beat him in his 9th or 10th fight?!
..... I wonder what excuses Price's camp could come up with.... Heavyweights on really mature when they hit 30 blah, blah, blah and then there's Hughie who's 18/19 beating Thompson.

I think it could be a jump too far. Not so much that he cant win this fight but where does he go after this? I mean it would be the Pulev's etc of this world and the Klitschko's. I think they would be step too far at the moment.macaca wrote:It would propell Hughie to the BIG BIG time and make David want to curl up in his bedroom in his mams house scratching his blankiecolumbo wrote:Can you imagine how embarrasing it would be for Price if Hughie beat him in his 9th or 10th fight?!..... Can't see where that sort of money came from. Maloney wouldn't have had any money left to pay anyone else.andeeholden wrote:I'm sure I read somewhere that he got around 400k for the rematch, not certain though.billy bessey wrote:How much do you reckon? Are you serious? Pele had no amateur experience whereas Hughie was a junior world gold medalist.Black Sam Bellamy wrote:Two words: Pele Reid
Pele was just bombing novices out, Hughie has already shown his boxing pedigree amateur and pro.

It's hilarious how far ahead of yourselves you lot get time and time again.
Hughie has done nothing yet, except talk. He has beaten no one of any note whatsoever.
Why should he be any different to the thousands of other boxers who talked a good game and went to sleep the first time they were hit back?
Tony Thompson would make an inexperienced novice like Hughie look ridiculous at this point.

I am amazed at how over-rated and hyped Thompson is at this point. Six months ago this man was completely written off as an old, fat, out of shape, has-been and beaten essentially an over-blown, over-hyped, mechanical tinman who never fought anybody---- who relied on his size and power alone to win fights against incredibly limited and old opposition. Anyone who can think in the ring, and can box well will set guys like that up into a trap 99 out of 100 times. So I think Thompson being thrown in with Pulev and all these other top guys is a huge mistake. The wins over Price are seriously over-rated.loaded_gloves wrote:It's hilarious how far ahead of yourselves you lot get time and time again.

Even if you think he's overrated after a win over Price I doesn't make sense to face Hughie fury who hasn't been past 6 rounds. Also how is he overrated no one saying he's the bestHomicideHenry wrote:I am amazed at how over-rated and hyped Thompson is at this point. heavyweight in the world. He's a top ten heavy and has the best American heavyweight resume how is that overrated
Re: TONY THOMPSON OFFERED BIG MONEY CLASH WITH HUGHIE FURY SEP 2
I disagree. Even in losing to Wladimir twice, Wladimir found it hard to pin Thompson down and land his shots. Thompsons boxing ability is better than some people give him credit for. He looks ungainly and uncoordinated a lot of the time but that doesnt mean he cant box.HomicideHenry wrote:I am amazed at how over-rated and hyped Thompson is at this point. What I am saying is he has to prove that he can beat a true proven fighter. If he can do that with Pulev, my hats off to him, but Pulev is going to eat Thompson alive. Thompson ought to be trying to establish his dominance as the top American heavyweight---- he should be challenging the likes of Deontay Wilder (who is still unproven), Bryant Jennings (who is also unproven), etc. and seeing how well he can do with those guys who are far better boxers than Price---- even though they are unproven to a point. Never forget, this was a man who was brought in to be a sacrficial lamb not once but twice against Price. A win over a hype job doesnt prove you are back in the game, it just means awful matchmaking from Maloney.columbo wrote:So you're advocating him fighting stiffs? Thompson is in 40's he has no reason to prove he's the best heavy. Based on resume which matters he already is. For him its about 'cashing out' or get a belt its not about provingHomicideHenry wrote:

Yeah but why would you fight the likes of Wilder and Jennings for relative peanuts and no titles, etc on the line when you could fight Pulev for fairly decent money and in an IBF final eliminator? Also some of these other 'top' guys havent really beaten anyone! Who has Pulev beaten that is that great?! Dimitrenko?! Ustinov?! I mean cmon.

Then there is your answer. Don't look at this man as being anything else but a man who is trying to cash out. However, business wise he must not be as saavy as he is in the ring---- because Team Fury offered him $800,000 (Thompson got $400,000 to rematch Price) and he's wanting Pulev rather than Hughie? Doesnt make much damn sense does it.world ranked wrote:Thompson is in 40's he has no reason to prove he's the best heavy. Based on resume which matters he already is. Guess he must think he can beat pulev. I dont.
But if he does then he'd cash out with a third shot at wlad.

It wasn't awful matchmaking by Maloney. If anything it was fairly good. It was truly awful fighting by Price that was the problem. He was absolutely terrible in all departments.

I've got a lot of time for Frank Maloney and I think he did a near perfect job with Lennox Lewis, but I think it was very bad match making. It was such a gigantic jump up in class.mickey1975 wrote:It wasn't awful matchmaking by Maloney. If anything it was fairly good. It was truly awful fighting by Price that was the problem. Price should have had more learning fights, he should have maybe gone to America or Canada or Germany and had a few low key undercard fights, where he could do some learning.
He should have had two distance fights before being allow to jump into world class.

Was bery much sink or swim and unfortunately, Pricey effing drowned!
As for the $800k offer to Thompson...mabe that's true. Thing is, Pulev offers him a chance to land another title shot, probably as mandatory ( giving him a bigger slice of the pie ) where as if he beats Hughie he gets absolutely no credit and his ranking doesn't receive any boost. It's not difficult to see why he is taking the Pulev route. It makes perfect sense.
I'm sure there are plenty of heavyweights out there who would gladly accept such a decent payday with Hughie. It's not like he is a young Mike Tyson where any opponent stands a real chance of getting knocked senseless. Hughie doesn't seem a murderous puncher. I'm actually against rushing him too much, the youngest ever heavyweight champion thing isn't going to happen so maybe they should calm down a touch and look to develop him at a more sensible pace.

I agree to a degree. The problem was though that he was being hyped to high heavens because he done a number on the likes of Mcdermott and Sexton. With all due respect to those guys there's a big difference between the level they fight at and world class! I think Maloney and the people around Price's camp got overly excited and caught up in the height aswell and payed for it! Also they underestimated Thompson's ability.keithmoonhangover wrote:I've got a lot of time for Frank Maloney and I think he did a near perfect job with Lennox Lewis, but I think it was very bad match making. 100% agree. And that is the reason why talk of Hughie fighting anyone with over 30 bouts is ridiculous. Cornish would be a great fight for him, a good challenge and a good chance he could win. Another good bout at this point in his career would be Danny Hughes or Towers.
As yet Fury isn't ready for proven 12 round fighters, he would probably struggle against McDermott if he couldn't drop him early.
And talk of comparing an 18yr old Fury with youngest ever world champ Mike Tyson is very silly. Tyson was a freak for his age, speed, power, reflexes and an excellently schooled specific fighting style. Hughie is showing promise and doing things the right way by being active and out of the limelight but to consider him as gifted enough to win the world title within a year after his previous performances is foolish. He has yet to fight man with more wins than losses and a desire to win FFS.
Re: TONY THOMPSON OFFERED BIG MONEY CLASH WITH HUGHIE FURY SEP 2
Why not fight price instead then?
