Fernando Vargas vs . Paul Williams
I think Vargas win by TKO early rounds
Re: Fernando Vargas vs . Paul Williams
I do think a prime Vargas would be a big, big problem for Paul Williams. He would definitely be able to shove him around the ring and get him on the ropes and work him over a lot. It's conceivable he could rattle Paul early, but I think Paul would stay up...so I do think Vargas' sheer aggression in the early rounds would give him a big advantage on the cards after 4 rounds. After that I think Paul knowing he's behind would change his tactic and start using his reach and height more to outbox Vargas and he would for a fair number of rounds, I could see Vargas taking a few more rounds down the stretch though and with a possible knockdown thrown in. Who knows.
I see a Split Decision in this fight...could go either way, but I'd favor Vargas by a hair.

A strong Margarito wore down a tiring Williams in the late rounds and probably deserved a close decision.
An also strong Vargas, with quicker hands than Margarito and better movement, would probably do the same thing.
But he'd start getting to Williams earlier en route to a 9th round KO.

Williams UD
Williams was relatively fast, had respectable power and threw tons of shots, while having(usually) a granite chin.
I don't think Vargas had anything to really hurt him with, I don't think he outboxes or outworks him.

I only ever saw Williams hurt at MW.

With Marg, though, the discovery a year and a half later must be kept in mind in evaluating prior results. Also, I had that fight for Williams.SenorPipino wrote:A strong Margarito wore down a tiring Williams in the late rounds and probably deserved a close decision.

Yeah that's a funny post. Saying "probably deserved a close decision" is pretty much tantamount to saying "probably could have gone either way"

I had it for Williams too. Although Margarito came on well in the second half, I thought P-Dub won it clearly. I've never really seen anyone question it tbh.Rover wrote:With Marg, though, the discovery a year and a half later must be kept in mind in evaluating prior results. The hand-wraps uncertainty just makes it look like an even better win.
I'd take Williams by a 7-5-type decision v Vargas, not accounting for knockdowns.

I think Vargas in his youth was hitting much harder than Margarito.Vargas саn brock Williams his punches to the head and to the body.

Williams by UD, too active. It would be a war though.

No he didn't deserve that decision. He did well in the second half, until the final round. Paul absolutely won the 12th with room to spare. I had it 8-4, but if Margarito would have done anything in the last round a draw would have been acceptable.SenorPipino wrote:A strong Margarito wore down a tiring Williams in the late rounds and probably deserved a close decision.

I'm saying for anyone who thought he won. I had it 116-112 Paul.RadioElRadar wrote:I had it for Williams too. Although Margarito came on well in the second half, I thought P-Dub won it clearly. Vargas wasn't a big one punch puncher. In his defenses, he took 11 to stop Marquez and blew out Clark and Thompson. Campas quit after 7. Wright and Quartey went the distance; I have little doubt Paul at 154 could also.Vladimir5555 wrote:I think Vargas in his youth was hitting much harder than Margarito.Vargas саn brock Williams his punches to the head and to the body.
