However I don't like have very much time for Tommy, he tries to manipulate people and he couldn't do that with me at one point and it seems to be a sore point for him. Many folk have told me he bad mouths me but eh I must be doing something right for him to do that and that makes me happy
I've done well in boxing without Tommy Gilmour in my life and that's the way it will continue, let's be honest David if people who work with him say things to his face rather than behind his back you'd find he really isn't a popular man at all
I'm sure that like you and I, Tommy isn't in this business to be liked. He is in this business to make money for him and his fighters, picking up titles along the way.
I'm not in professional boxing for the fame or the money but to help look after young kids and try to help them reach the levels they can without being used by the horrible people you can meet in this business, and there are lots of people looking for their share off the back of young kids who may not have the right team behind them to know who is really trying to look after them.
Well IMO if any young fighter wanted a promoter in Scotland I'd recommend Alex Morrison because he has the personal touch unlike Tommy who in your own words is purely in it for money ,I know for a fact Alex hasn't always taken money off his fighters, you can't say the same for TG
IMO for a manager to be allowed to take 25% is wrong and something the BBBof C should look into
I can see what both Alex Morrison and Tommy Gilmour do for boxing in Scotland and without them Scottish boxing would be in a bad place.
I can't speak for working alongside Alex Morrison so I won't make any assumptions but if you are trying to tell me that Alex isn't in it to make money then I think you have something blinding you from the truth. At the end of the day it is their job and nobody would work hard and not expect to get paid for it.
I agree with you on the 25% fee but at the minute that is the way things are you just have to work with it, imo the coach should get a better % for the long hours they spend day in and out getting their fighters ready for the fights, but without the right manager you won't get the fights!!!
You know first hand how hard it is to get the breaks for fighters when you decided to manage fighters as well train them, if promoters don't want to let you in then you are not getting the fights even if you deserve them.
You need the person who will help open the doors to the bigger fights and Tommy can do that (as can Alex) but I have seen Tommy live up to that personally, we wasted years listening to the Ingles telling us that the next fight was an eliminator blah blah blah, we went and spoke to Tommy who told us that if Lee won his next 2 fights he would get Lee a shot at the British, he delivered, after being beat he promised Lee a couple of wins and he would get him a commonwealth shot, he delivered. He also told us that if he kept winning he could get Lee the shot at the European Title, he delivered.
Now although Lee never won all of the fights Tommy got him into the position to fight for the belts so imo he done his job, you will say the same about Alex Morrison with Ricky so is it not the fact that they are basically the same at all depends on which one each person is used to dealing with?
