Sunday Night - September 14, 1958..............

Nya Ullevi Stadium - Gothenburg, Sweden


The 53,164 Swede's stormed the beautiful outdoor stadium, with another 15,000
attempting their best to enter to see the #1 Ranked 'unbeaten' Eddie Machen take
on their home-country Hero - Ingemar 'Ingo' Johansson.

Over 500,000 Swede's tried to get to tickets to this event, and it appeared that everyone
from this beautiful city of Gothenburg {Population; 410,000} situated on the Southwest
Coast of Sweden was either in the Nya Ullevi Stadium or outside around the perimeter of
the Stadium, listening to the events that developed inside.

The cool night temperature of 53* was the 'perfect setting' for this spectacular event.

While Ali's first bout with Liston drew less than 9000 people and his second bout drew less than 3000. The second Patterson Johannson fight pulled in around 40,000. The third bout pulled in around 14,000. So within the context of that moment in time Johannson was probably correct.

The same place that told Muhammad Ali to take his 'Circus Act' somewhere else in 1980.

yeah but there was still a lot of interest and curiousity in him. He had kept his name in the papers and magazines by teasing a comeback. A lot of times being away from the ring like that builds interest when the fighter comes back and generates a bigger gate than might have been possible when they left. When you look at the context, the fact that both Ali-Liston HW championships drew less than 12,000 people COMBINED then the bar isnt that high. So I can see that argument. By the end of the year though I dont think there is any argument that Ali was the bigger draw. In a bout that was horribly promoted He drew about the same amount against Chuvalo as Patterson-Johannson 3 did.
