Some fun boxing talk
A. Who is the physically strongest boxer of all time? There is in fact a factual answer to this question. Lets see if anyone knows who it is!
B. Which professional boxer went on to have the most successful acting career? There is no clear answer here, so more room for discussion.

Re: Some fun boxing talk
I'll guess at James J. Jeffries or Primo Carnera for the strongest.
Need to think more about the acting question - maybe Jack O'Halloran?

Jeffries and Da Preem were both famous for their strength. But it's neither of them...this fighter is much less famous!SteveO wrote:I'll guess at James J. Jeffries or Primo Carnera for the strongest.

Good call on Giant Jack. He had a good role in a Gene Hackman film about the French Foreign Legion called March or Die.

Not really sure what you mean, but either way the questions are still open.addi wrote:he didnt act, well as far as i know, just hit the gong with a big hammer, thought you might be playing with us, fun boxing talk.

Tony Danza or Micky Rourke. But Danza was a professional contender before he acted as opposed to Rourke.

I renember being surprised when I found out Danza had been as good as he was as a boxer.IKSRTFO wrote:punchoutsb wrote: B. Which professional boxer went on to have the most successful acting career? There is no clear answer here, so more room for discussion.

Another comedian who boxed (just one pro fight) was Larry Fine of the Three Stooges. He was always the one taking the most abuse in their short films, and yet was an undefeated professional fighter!
Re: Some fun boxing talk
Okay, I'll try Nikolai Valuev - he must be physically very strong! If we're not talking heavyweights how about Laszlo Papp?punchoutsb wrote:Jeffries and Da Preem were both famous for their strength. O'Halloran also had a great part in one of the Superman movies.

I completely forgot his roles in Superman! The first role I saw him in was the fun King Kong remake.
I'm also sure Valuev was very strong. But still not the answer. This boxer was never champion...or contender...or good!
I've heard Papp was very strong. Kostya Tzsyu has some legendary stories of his strength as well!

Danza was undoubtedly one of the great actors of our time.punchoutsb wrote:I renember being surprised when I found out Danza had been as good as he was as a boxer.IKSRTFO wrote:punchoutsb wrote: B. I should think Victor McLaglen is in with a shout as most successful actor - boxed Jack Johnson in 1909 and went on to win an Oscar.

Victor McLaglen is one of two professional fighters to win an Oscar.SolomonDeedes wrote:I should think Victor McLaglen is in with a shout as most successful actor - boxed Jack Johnson in 1909 and went on to win an Oscar.
His fight scene with John Wayne in The Quiet Man made that movie watchable. My favorite film of his was an old black and white called The Lost Patrol. Boris Karloff co-starred.

Aha, it must be Joe Grim then!punchoutsb wrote:I I'm also sure Valuev was very strong. But still not the answer. This boxer was never champion...or contender...or good!

Was never pro but I heard Martin Lawrence was a golden gloves boxer and contemplated turning pro.

Bob Hope also boxed as an amateur. After he rose to fame, he had clearly faked charity matches against Jack Dempsey, Rocky Marciano, and SRR; Bob Hope won all threeIKSRTFO wrote: Wow, never would've thought it.

I guess Jack Palance is the other? Though I think McLaglen's Best Actor trumps Palance's Best Supporting Actor.punchoutsb wrote:Victor McLaglen is one of two professional fighters to win an Oscar.SolomonDeedes wrote:I should think Victor McLaglen is in with a shout as most successful actor - boxed Jack Johnson in 1909 and went on to win an Oscar.

Mickey Rourke should have been the third.

Re: Some fun boxing talk
Robert Conrad (of the class tv series The Wild Wild West) had five professional bouts. Won four and drew one.
I have heard that Dean Martin fought professionally under the name Kid Crochet but I can't find any records.
As for question one, here is a hint: the strongest fighter of all time had a nickname that included a piece of fruit...

Re: Some fun boxing talk
Tony Danza was far from a contender. Carlos Palomino did knock him out in Taxi.
Re: Some fun boxing talk
Strongest would be Paul Anderson, the strongman & Olympic weightlifting gold medalist. He was from Georgia, so was probably nicknamed the "Georgia Peach'.
Re: Some fun boxing talk
Jack Palance was reportedly a boxer around the time of WWII, I think the war may have killed his career off.
