The Hitman or The Hawk: Who Was the Better KO Artist
Two of the most devastating punchers of all time pound per pound of recent memory. Who was the better puncher? The great Thomas "The Hitman" Hearns or Julian "The Hawk" Jackson?
Re: The Hitman or The Hawk: Who Was the Better KO Artist
Whoever BoxBuzz picks.
Re: The Hitman or The Hawk: Who Was the Better KO Artist
Well it's not THAT Hawk.....lol.....However this does put the pressure on to be accurate....as I don't want to let Seamus down.Seamus wrote:Whoever BoxBuzz picks.
I'll need to confer with Il Duce...and get back to you.

I picked Jackson for having more raw power, but Hearns was the more skilled of the two punchers and beat the better opposition. Guess it depends on one's criteria.
Re: The Hitman or The Hawk: Who Was the Better KO Artist
I think Jackson had more one shot KO power as well, but Hearns was definitely right there with him. I think Hearns would beat Jackson more often than not in a head to head fight.
Re: The Hitman or The Hawk: Who Was the Better KO Artist
Seriously if you use the word "Artist" It's Hearns.......Jackson's work was not often pretty.

I don't. Jackson was a bit diminished with his power at 160. Tommy was dropping and stopping Light Heavyweights and Cruiserweights well past his prime.gilgamesh wrote:I think Jackson had more one shot KO power as well

Fair point. Add to that his superior quality of wins, I'd go for Tommy, too.SaadOffTheDeck wrote:I don't. Jackson was a bit diminished with his power at 160. Tommy was dropping and stopping Light Heavyweights and Cruiserweights well past his prime.
Re: The Hitman or The Hawk: Who Was the Better KO Artist
Don't know about sheer power but Tommy would land a far higher percentage of his home-run shots.
Accuracy makes a huge difference.

Hearns was the better knockout artist... But Jackson had more power.
It's a bit of a strange old question.

When I saw the title I thought it would be about Aaron Pryor.

So did I.
And I voted for Hearns. I think he was a better finisher, and hit harder shot for shot.

I don't think his power was diminished at Middleweight. He was just on the down slope of his career starting there. He was still just as capable of putting guys out in frightening ways at Middle as he was Jr. Middle.SaadOffTheDeck wrote:I don't. Jackson was a bit diminished with his power at 160. That's quite a contradiction.

And as much as I admire Hearns, I'd pick Pryor -- only 4 of 39 went the distance with him.

Not sure it can be quantified as simply as that, to be honest. The quality of wins has to come into play.Cutman Scabbers wrote:gilgamesh wrote:I thought the same thing.Cutman Scabbers wrote:When I saw the title I thought it would be about Aaron Pryor.

I'd think so, unless Hector Camacho was a greater knock out artist than Ike Williams.NazNaci1 wrote:Not sure it can be quantified as simply as that, to be honest. The quality of wins has to come into play.Cutman Scabbers wrote:gilgamesh wrote:

Re: The Hitman or The Hawk: Who Was the Better KO Artist
Hearns had many more ways of winning than a right hand to the chin.
Re: The Hitman or The Hawk: Who Was the Better KO Artist
Hearns. His power even carried over to the unbreakable. Even though he didn't stop neither he almost ended Leonard's career and hurt the superhuman chin of Hagler even if for a few seconds.

The great Hitman KO'd stone-chinned great Roberto Duran.
another question for you all will be, who was the better puncher/ko artist after round 5: The Hitman or The Hawk?
It seemed to me that after five rounds, Hearns was not as devastating as a puncher. Did Jackson had that problem?

His power wasn't on the down slope. He was as a fighter. Not to mention his eyes were getting worse and worse. One of the reasons he became less technically proficient down the line. Not that he was ever a great technician, but still. His power was just as frightening, he just wasn't as adept at landing the big shot (with some obvious exceptions).SaadOffTheDeck wrote:That's quite a contradiction.
Hearns was the more skilled finisher, but Jackson was the harder puncher as far as raw power for me.

I don't agree with a word of this, but it's quite clear.King Carlos wrote:His power wasn't on the down slope. He was as a fighter. Not to mention his eyes were getting worse and worse.
