Freddie Roach once trained De La Hoya and saw him sparring with the late Edwin Valero and the story goes that Valero beat Oscar up a little bit and Roach saw there that he cannot deal with southpaws very well. So later he sent Pacquiao, another southpaw, to war with Oscar.
Re: Sparring tales and gym legends
A few years before they fought, Thomas Hearns sparred with Ray Leonard and gave him problems.

Seldon is a guy I'd imagine would be murder in the gym. Fast, hard punching, and his biggest weaknesses (chin and stamina) don't show up much in 3-4 round sparring sessions with head gear and 16 ounce gloves.energie wrote:shannon briggs got his ass handed to him in sparring bt bruce seldon and lou savarese.......savarese put briggs down a lot also....

At the Ingle gym in the mid 1990's a journeyman middleweight with a losing record (Robert Harper) hit the heavy bag so hard that it came from it's mooring; in front of shocked witnesses. In the busy gym it had only happened before once, by Pele Reid.

Is that true or are you having a joke with your mate?
Re: Sparring tales and gym legends
Danny Williams very publicly claimed to have knocked Herbie Hide out in sparring. Needless to say Hide was not best pleased.
They were all due to settle it in the ring but Hide got a terrible cut in a keep busy fight so it had to be postponed and then Williams ended up being offered the shot at Tyson.

The amateur heavyweight your talking about who give a rusty not long out of jail Tyson a hard time was reigning 1996 golden gloves champion Davarryl touch of sleep WilliamsonSugahRay Robitussen wrote:In Mike Tyson's new autobiography THE UNDISPUTED TRUTH.
He mention's that early into training at the camp at Orwell Ohio
when he was preparing to fight Peter McNeeley.
He sparred with a young amateur who hurt him with punches.
The punches hurt so much ,Mike Tyson was concerned he would be knocked out.
So he had his trainer stop the scheduled 5 rounds of sparring
after the second round.
Tyson saying"THat's enough for today,we will begin again tomorrow".
However he did not disclose the name of the"Young Amateur"
in his book.
do any of you have any idea who it may have been?

It's true Tom and I was told it by another gym member, not Robert

He must have a powerful punch on him, or he tampered with the screws

That happened in a public training session for Frank Bruno when he was preparing to fight Tyson the first time.palooka wrote:Tomasino wrote:palooka wrote:At the Ingle gym in the mid 1990's a journeyman middleweight with a losing record (Robert Harper) hit the heavy bag so hard that it came from it's mooring; in front of shocked witnesses. I heard Ronnie Shark Clark put down not only Ricky Burns but Big Billy Nelson too, in the one session. ![[icon_knockout.gif] :KO:](./images/smilies/icon_knockout.gif)
Re: Sparring tales and gym legends
Wasn't there a rumor that Monzon staggered Frazier briefly in a Philly gym?
I find that pretty hard to believe.
Carlos struck me as too street smart to ever get in the ring with Joe.

Wonder if this was before, or after the February 15, 1982 fight.Il Duce wrote:Bruce Finch
Send Ray Leonard thru the Ropes and out on to the Ring Apron in a sparring-session in Landover, Maryland.
According to Bruce, both he and Ray got into a 'rough-exchange'. Bruce was backed to the Ropes, and as Ray
leaned in to throw a punch, Bruce countered with a fast 'right-to-the-chops'.
Ray fell by Bruce, and thru the Ropes and was dangling over the middle-strand. He then fell upon the Ring Apron,
and was 'out'.

Yes, there are big stage fighters and there are gym fighters. Not many boxers held their nerve and boxed to their best on a big stage as Leonard.Nile4000 wrote:Wonder if this was before, or after the February 15, 1982 fight.Il Duce wrote:Bruce Finch

It was in March of 1980.
Ray Leonard was training for his 1st Title Defense against Davey 'Boy' Green set for March 31, 1980
in Landover, Maryland.
Bruce Finch, who had a record of 21-3-1 {14 KO's} had a style similar to Davey 'Boy' Green, was summoned
from Chicago, Illinois.
Bruce had gone thru '2' earlier sessions with Ray.
On the 3rd-Day, Bruce was in the Ring again with Ray.
Bruce Finch >
It was in the 2nd-Round, and I was asked to attack Ray aggressively, which I did. I backed him up, and threw about
a 'dozen' punches while he covered up on the Ropes. Ray then waited, and countered me with a hard 'right-left'.
I was stung, and backed up all the way across the Ring. Ray then moved in, as I reached the Ropes with my back. Ray
threw a 'left-right', and was about to load up to throw another 'one-two'.
He dropped his left-hand, and I bounced out with a right-hand 'square-on-the-chops' as he was moving forward.
He then fell forward to the left-side of me, and he fell through the middle Rope strand, and was dangling over the Ropes.
He was 'suspended' on the Rope for about 2-Seconds, then fell out and upon the Ring Apron. He was 'Knocked-Out'.
Palooka, don't believe a word this 'charlatan' posts. Fiction, from a tiny mind.

There has been a long standing rumour in Australia that Lester Ellis and Jeff Fenech met in a gym to settle some personal differences.... with Ellis apparently doing quite a number on Fenech....

Il Duce, let's leave folks mums out of it. And tomasino, if you have an opinion of Il Duce's record of credibility, state it succinctly. Comments on the size of one's mind, could be considered derogatory. As for me, I have found clear evidence to support my opinion that Il Duce mixes facts with fantasy, creating a diluted pool. One must filter his comments, by checking the record vigilantly. He has gone on record as having an ant Ali bias, and his remarks do often conflict with more credible sources.

Whilst training for the Hagler fight Sugar Ray Leonard was beaten up in sparring by Quincy Taylor. Described as a sad sight Taylor landed numerous unanswered jabs, made Leonard miss and bullied him about.

Didnt a journeyman break Marvin Haglers nose (one of a pair of boxing twins) in sparring, I think it was before the Mugabi fight, caused a delay to the fight?
