It is easy to forget how genuinely suspicious most of the UK general public were of this 'Canadian' called Lewis when he first came back to the UK to launch his pro career.

Many saw it as a cynical marketing exercise.

It wasn't until he was successful on the world stage that the British public began to warm to Lewis...

I used the term dislike loosely. Maybe unpopular is better.

Anybody know or remember how Dick Richardson was viewed? I believe he had his fair share of controversies in the ring.

DICK RICHARDSON wasn't really disliked by the british boxing public. he wasn't an angel in the ring (a bit of dirty fighter) but they didn't get on his back as far as I remember. brian London was disliked more around that time because he was regarded - rightly or wrongly - as a guy that didn't try to win and would too easily cave in.

I just thought of Richardson as I was just thinking back to the years before bravado and boasting became practically the norm and so I wondered what if anything might have made a large portion of the public want a boxer to lose back then. I guess a dirty fighter would have had to have been really dirty to have been seen as the panto villain.

yeah, kevin was great in that one. would have had a very interesting career but for the shoulder. I think he went over and gave gomez a kiss to wind him up when he got in the ring! (then smashed him to bits)
