Re: Is Frampton getting the best deal from McGuigan
I just checked what Eddie said at the time. He blamed two things - the increased cost of taking the Sky broadcast outfit to Ireland to cover Frampton's home fights, coupled with Frampton getting the lowest viewing figures for Sky's boxing over the previous 12 months. He said Frampton delivered (to sky) worse viewing figures that Kell Brook, Carl Froch, Barker, Bellew and Prizefighter.
Eddie and McGuigan went their separate ways because Eddie would not agree to be a co-promoter. He wanted to promote Frampton exclusively and wanted a long term deal, and Barry wouldn't meet those terms so he went his own way. Up to that point, they had worked on a fight by fight basis.
In terms of money, McGuigan said Frampton was getting 5 times more money for his first fight after leaving Matchroom, than he got for the last fight with Matchroom (vs Kiko Martinez).
Reading between the lines, I don't think the costs of going to Ireland were the deal breaker, I think it was that Eddie could not get Carl tied up promotionally, on an exclusive long term basis. McGuigan could see that Carl's career was about to take off. Barry manages him and the son trains him, you can see why they'd be a bit careful about signing Carl to a deal whereby the promoter is going to make a fortune, over and above everyone else in the equation.

It strikes me as crazy that it happens over and over.

Re: Is Frampton getting the best deal from McGuigan
Those who say McGuigan hasn't done well for Carl should take into account that (a) they have exclusive promotional rights in Ireland and (b) it was a 3 fight deal with B o x N a t I o n, which has one fight to go. Carl is well placed to retain more of the money he generates as he moves onto the world stage. Not a bad position to be in really.

Those are very good points. Indeed Eddie would not have wanted to set a precedent of copromotion with young prospects. Frampton is a star and sells out arenas. But the other side of the equation is that so far he is not able to secure a title shot, or in fact any big, meaningful fight. I am questioning the power of his promotional team to give him those fights. What he is going to do after Box-Nation 3 fight deal runs out? Make another deal for few more fights? He might have been better off staying with Matchroom.

Dublin this July makes no sense now. UFC are coming to Dublin in July and there will be massive publicity behind that and that will take away from boxing.expe wrote:That did seem a bit weird with the excuse about the costs, a 9,000 sellout crowd should cover those easily. I can understand not wanting to put on a show in Belfast in July, but why not Dublin? Can get around the same attendance and by now Frampton's a big enough star that he could sell outside Belfast.
Re: Is Frampton getting the best deal from McGuigan
I can see why he went for a 3 fight deal, it gives him more flexibility and the ability to renegotiate.Tarkus wrote:JimJim2009

McGuigan strikes me as a man who doesn't like to put all his eggs in one basket and let's face it, he knows all too well the pitfalls of being stuck in some horrible promotional contract. His sons are decent lads and by all accounts Frampton might as well be part of the family so he is just looking after his best interests.
It makes sense to me.
The flip side of it is that should it all go pear shaped when Frampton gets derailed, he may find it hard to get the next good deal but let's be real here, a loss with most big promoters will see you slide down the ladder and another loss will see most people binned off.
Re: Is Frampton getting the best deal from McGuigan
Hearn is meeting up with Frampton and Barry next week apparantly so this might all be a moot point in the end.
Re: Is Frampton getting the best deal from McGuigan
Was a 4 fight deal with BN. They would have been three in now had the Wembley fight not been pulled last summer, 2 to run still

Re: Is Frampton getting the best deal from McGuigan
i dont have any inside information, but id hazard a guess, and its just that mind, a guess. That Frampton has some form of slice of the Cyclone Promotions pie.
I personally think he's a partner, or definitely involved somehow.
I dont for one minute buy into the idea that McGuigan is only out to make more money for himself. Barry, imo, is trying to do for Carl, what Eastwood did not do for him ,and thats not rip him off. He comes across, and i believe it to, that he wants to make Carl as much money as possible, and make him as succesful as possible. Of course Barry hardly wants to lose money in the process, but theres no way its all about Barry.
As for the Quigg fight. I think its a total an utter mismatch. Frampton would knock Quigg out within 3 rounds. No doubt about it.
I actually think it'd be a similar fight, and scenario to the David Haye and Enzo Macrinelli fight.
When Haye and Macrinelli fought, Macrinelli was the darling of Frank Warrens SKYTV led camp. David Haye on the other hand was the uber successful amateur that was in control of his own promition and also on a rival network (Setanta) When the fight was made, the masses (me included), beleived everything the hype machine (SKY) told us, and most people assumed Macrinelli would beat David Haye.
If fans had actually bothered to look into the history of the two fighters careers up to that, it was obvious to see that Haye would win, but nope, we believed SKY, we fell for the propaganda. Then what proceeded was an absolute cakewalk for Haye.
The Frampton-Quigg debate is this all over again, only with micro-men.
If you look at Framptons amateur pedigree and compare it to Quiggs, there's no comparison. Carl was boxing world class level amateurs, and knocking them with headgear on. Quigg i think had 30 odd amateur fights.
Then look at their pro career. Quiggs most high profile fight to date was beating up a washed up European level fighter in Munroe, while Frampton was knocking out, and quite frankly systematically beating the current IBF world champion.
If you analyse the fight correctly, there's no argument for Quigg winning. If i was Carl id move heaven and earth for the easy money, because thats all it is.
Hearn will avoid this fight like the plague, he's no thick. He hasnt got where he is by feeding his "champions" to the lions. I think he'll make so many stipulations in the proposed agreements that the Frampton camp will never be able to be accept. But for me, as a fan, i hope the fight can be made.

Eastwood won over £1m in libel damages over his handling of McGuigan. The above poster should remove his comment.

I know Galahad is your man mate, but who would you fancy to prevail if Frampton and Quigg met in the ring? I think Frampton myself.Pugilist-specialist wrote:Eastwood won over £1m in libel damages over his handling of McGuigan. The above poster should remove his comment.
Re: Is Frampton getting the best deal from McGuigan
Where is the proof that Eastwood ripped of McGuigan? Eastwood heavily invested in McGuigan in order to give Barry the best chance. He had Teddy Atlas over helping with training. He had Ken Buchanan over sparring Barry. Sounds like a manager doing his best for me. The publicity Eastwood helped drum up eventually led to Barry being inducted into the hall of fame and has left McGuigan as a personality still held in affection by many.
Frampton beats Quigg in my opinion but as someone has already noted the Sky hype show is telling us this is a great fight. Personally I would love to see Carl against either Kiko or LSC. Stay away from Rigo.

Re: Is Frampton getting the best deal from McGuigan
check out IFL TV interview from yesterday with Richard Schaefer.
Frampton V LSC is not high on his list at all and does not have to be made for nine months
what other option does Carl has
he has to pay allegedly off to get out of the deal and beat Quigg at the end of the summer in the MEN. he then has to beat him again in Belfast in November before unification fights.
I have also taught that Frampton would beat Quigg quiet easily

Re: Is Frampton getting the best deal from McGuigan
He should do the latter. I dont think it would be an easy fight though for Frampton and I say that as someone who favours him. I dont think Quigg would be an easy fight for anyone possibly even Rigo because he prepares so well and he's not really easy to hit cleanly on.mullenman wrote:check out IFL TV interview from yesterday with Richard Schaefer.

Frampton already said live on UTV on Monday 7th April that:slapbangwhallop wrote:Frampton's stock is hot in Belfast at the moment and they can easily drag out having to fight Quigg or LSC for at least six months and blame it on the other party and have another two less risky fights in the mean time.
"There will be no more fights. My next fight will be for a title"
(when he was asked by Ruth Gorman if he'll have one more warm-up fight before going for a World Title)
Then, Carl was on the Stephen Nolan show two nights ago and said:
"He has nine months to fight me, otherwise they will take the belt off him. Either way, I will be fighting for that title"
Sounds confident enough.
Re: Is Frampton getting the best deal from McGuigan
Regarding Barry McGuigan - I refuse to believe that Barry is using Carl to make money for himself. Obviously Barry will get a cut, but he is doing a fantastic service to Irish boxing with the shows that Cyclone Promotions keep putting on the in the Odyssey. Young talent like Eamon O'Kane, Dan McShane, Marco McCullough are all building their way up.
Frampton is only in a difficult position because Quigg & Martinez do NOT want to fight him. And that leaves Rigondeaux (bad idea!) and Santa Cruz who will only take the fight in the US.

Re: Is Frampton getting the best deal from McGuigan
That's not strictly true. The mandatory will be called again in 9 months and will have 90 days to fight him at that point. Means the fight doesn't have to happen till this time next year. What's he going to do sit out for 12 months?Crease wrote:Frampton already said live on UTV on Monday 7th April that:slapbangwhallop wrote:Frampton's stock is hot in Belfast at the moment and they can easily drag out having to fight Quigg or LSC for at least six months and blame it on the other party and have another two less risky fights in the mean time.
