Coming back to something raised earlier, Leeds is without question the best city in the north of England.

It's the UK's second most important city behind London in terms of banking and finance. For a long time it was Europe's fastest growing city. The city centre is far better than anywhere else in the north and it's the only place that could still put millions into building a new shopping centre and arena during a recession.

A study last year ranked it above Manchester and Liverpool for affluence and I think it was RightMove that said it is the best place to live in England.

When I wanted to leave my small and run down home town to go to uni, I had three choices; Leeds, Manchester and Sheffield and it was a no brainer. Leeds is less grim the other two and just feels more vibrant. I love Manchester and Sheffield because the people are great, but the cities really have little on Leeds these days.

Leeds centre is pleasant, so is Sheffields and there are some beautiful suburbs and some really run down areas. An awful lot of the grand shopping areas have been built on the never never and pretty soon every city will be pretty much the same as the next. Doncaster has a big shopping area and it has destroyed areas of the town centre - sucked all the money and passing trade away.

Leeds has got same rough arsed areas though. I have spent many a night in Harehills and Chapeltown, where if it wasn`t due to us knowing a few lads from the area we would have been ripped apart pretty sharpish.

Maybe it`s changed now, but if you were a white guy in the late 80`s/early 90`s, you were up shite creek without a paddle if you found yourself there. We knew a few black guys that played for our rugby team and if they were not with us, I`d never have gone there.

Plenty other shitholes around Leeds aswell Seacroft, Beeston, Gipton, Holbeck and parts of Bramley, Armley and hunslet.

Maybe they have changed now, but they used to fairly rough.

Leeds centre has improved as a night out massivley. It used to be spread out and not that busy. Where I grew up in Wakefield (about 9 miles from Leeds) we used to get all the away footy fans stopping off for a night out on the way home from Leeds matches, plus loads of stagnights. Mixed with the local council estate nutjobs it could get pretty lively on a weekend.

Was home about 6 months ago and nothing has really changed in wakefield apart from an influx of £1 shops.

On the best city in the North of England. Newcastle. The nightlife is above and beyond anything anywhere else in the North. On the affluence point, I'v no idea how Newcastle would compare to Leeds, or even how you measure that? But it's had a lot of work done around the Quayside area in the last 15 years or so and the majority of the city and it's architecture are really nice.

I'm white and I lived in Harehills for 7 years and had no personal trouble, for every Chapeltown/Harehills there's a Moss Side, Toxeth, Handsworth etc every big city as shit areas and Leeds is no different.

There's been massive retail development in the city in the last few years and its improved a lot, still has a shite & overpriced transport system however.

As for best city in the north? Hard to call as I've lived here all my life except 3 years at Uni so I've not experienced living in other major cities much, but in terms of last nights crowd - other than the disappointing bill one of the reasons I didn't go is because I knew it'd be full of moronic Leeds Utd fans chanting shite about Man U, singing MOT and all that being sat amongst that bunch of twats wouldn't have have made for a pleasant evening. I didn't hear much of that crap being sung around when I saw Warrington @ the Town Hall in Feb last year.
