Hopkins has faced and beaten down a generation of middleweights, super middles, and light heavies.Take away the Russian's power and we wouldn't even be debating this fight. What else does he bring to the table?
But power doesn't faze extraordinary fighters who are ring genius'.
For a reminder, see aging Ali vs. Foreman in Zaire.

Hopkins bomaye!
What Kovalev does well besides punch:

Throw in combination, mix his attack, time opponents, cut off the ring, maintain punching power while moving, and he's possibly the best finisher in boxing. LOL at people still bringing out the crude slugger lines; it's as if they don't bother to watch him fight and rarely do they explain why Kovalev should be considered a crude slugger. I also think the wins Hopkins scored several years ago are less important than you seem to think, because it will be the 2014 version of Hopkins--the one who recently lost widely to Dawson, was down twice and hurt against Pascal, and getting hit regularly by Murat--who is facing Kovalev.

But hey, Bernard Hopkins beat Kelly Pavlik several years ago, and Kovalev is a favored puncher like Pavlik, so that must mean that BHOP is going to prove all the critics wrong again and school this kid.

Kovelev does none of those things. If any of us hasn't seen him fight, it is you. A fighter couldn't be anymore basic than Kovalev. He may win because he is fighting a mentally ill 60 year old. Get this straight. That is why he will win if he does. A prime Hopkins would make Sergei take his last name. I like SK but he isn't good at all. His recent streak his match making. I hope he wins, but no one as basic and crude as Sergei has ever troubled Hopkins.Hopkins always has been able to beat strong punchers with little technical skill.

Kovalev isn't "good at all" but there is literally nobody in the entire light heavy division who has a prayer to beat him besides maybe Hopkins. But other than that. He sucks. And stuff. Stevenson literally flew to another network so he wouldn't have to fight him. He is praying Hopkins beats him. Cleverly, a top 5 guy at light heavy, literally RAN to the cruiserweight div to face BIGGER MEN so he could get the hell away from Kovalev. Said every time Kovalev hit him it felt like a shotgun blast.

Name one puncher Hopkins has ever faced who has been tearing through opponents within 3 rounds a pop. Gabriel Campillo has been in with some pretty good fighters. A super experienced durable guy who knows how to box and move. He beat Cloud just as handily as Hopkins did. He was literally RUNNING from Kovalev and lucky to even see round 3.

Lightheavy is awful which is why a 50 year old can beat guys half his age. I don't know if no one else can beat him. He hasn't fought everybody. He isn't a good fighter. Maybe you started watching boxing 6 months ago so I forgive your ignorance. If there were decent fighters at lightheavy, he'd be a tv fighter. My god Qawi or Spinks would have to post bail if the commission even sanctioned a fight. The only accurate thing to say about Sergei is he may be the best of a bad lot. That doesn't mean he is a great fighter if you have the neurons to see the distinction(which you don't).

Haven't many of you counted out Hopkins before and then been amazed when he performed "miracle" after "miracle?"
At this point it should be obvious that speed and movement will trouble the nearly 50-year-old Hopkins. Kovalev has neither. He has nothing that Hopkins hasn't seen before in his quarter-century long career.

It will be just another routine night for the legend as he schools Kovalev, and sends him packing back to Russia with a bruised face and ego.
So then if Kovalev wins you'll give him full credit, right? Even though he's one of those blasted Russians :OhYes:
Sounds a bit like some prickly ethnocentrism.
If I labeled Canelo "the Mexican," would that strike you as a slur or offensive?
Just a descriptive adjective, amigo.
Some of you guys can be so sensitive. Stunning, coming from boxing fans.
I'm not the sensitive one, amigo.

The only memorable posts I see from you are of you complaining how much the "Russians" (even though many are not Russian) suck. Wilder's will clear out the division, yadda yadda yadda. It's all good, I can understand your frustration as the landscape of boxing goes through another evolution. It must be hard to be stuck in the past.

I see you are diverting the course of the topic.

Name a guy the size of Kovalev with his type of punching power that Hopkins had ever faced.

50 yrs old isn't the best time to fight the biggest hardest punching guy you have ever been in with.

Tarver. Dawson. These guys are decision fighters by and large. Kovalev is a wrecking machine.

Timing opponents: see him initially hurt Campillo, Cleverly, and Sillakh with counterpunches.

Throwing in combination: see him throw a crisp five-punch combo to drop Campillo the first time, 4-5 punch combinations to finish Cleverly, and consistently throw various three punch combinations (e.g. cross, jab, cross) in most of his bouts.

Punch diversity: see him drop Caparello with a straight right to the body, drop Agnew with left hooks to the head before breaking his ribs and stopping him with a jab to the body, hurt Cleverly with a left jab/cross before ripping him with body shots, dropping him with with a right crosses, and mixing in uppercuts, body shots, hooks, and crosses to finish him.

Finishing ability: see him stop Campillo, Caparello, Sillakh, Cleverly, and virtually everyone he's faced soon after he's first hurt them.

Maintaining punching power while moving: see him drop Agnew with a left hook while he was rushing forward, see him put down Thompson with a right hand while he's on the move, see him knock Sillakh close to unconscious with a right head as leaped forward.

Cutting off the ring: see him repeatedly trap evasive opponents like Thompson, Agnew, Caparello, Campillo, and Boone. Name some examples of fighters he couldn't track down.

Now explain how he's just a crude and basic puncher.

You won't be able to convince anyone in this thread. I mean the guy came right out and said if Kovalev wins, it's only because Hopkins is old. You can't correct that kind of bias. But excellent post.

I am afraid that during a moment of clear thinking Bernard will withdraw. He could defend one of his titles against Mohammedi at the age of 50 and retire after that instead of being crushed by Kovalev. I doubt that he needs money so badly.

Hop is an old school warrior. I'm sure he's not fighting Kovalev for the money. I've always respected him for that. He's done and said lots of stupid crap (how he'd never lose to a "white boy" before Calzaghe beat him), but he's always been a warrior as far as boxing is concerned. I doubt he will pull out of this fight. My main question is will he retire after this fight regardless of result?

Yeah no.

What Kovalev does really well is throw a left jab with good speed and concussive power. When he jams it into an opponent's face or body there usually is a reaction. I expect him to land this punch enough to offset much of Bernard's holding. Could even set up a knockout, but even at 50 I think Hopkins will run and hold his way to a decision loss.

This has nothing to do with the fact that Kovalev is white (in reference to his abilities), I can't believe that you'd say something so ignorant and the last part of your quote was downright racists as you implied that American and Mexicans are somehow from the lower class of society just because we see things differently than you do. (your quote was spoken like a true Bigot).

I just don't see anything special in Kovalev, sure he comes forward and he's knocked out a bunch of bums but what I stated regarding his skill level is that he is very basic and nothing else, he has big power but I haven't seen him do a great many things that I've seen well schooled master boxer types do, if that makes me a racist then so be it, if that makes me on the lower rung of society for seeing things differently then so be it.
