Bit of a stretch when hes lost his last 3 comfortably. Id back Crolla and Mitchell to beat him at this point and probably Campbell and Flanagan toobilly nelson wrote:Watch Ricky bounce back in Leeds, he's still easily the best LW in the UK

Re: Burns vs Mitchell 2 if it occured
Would you back Crolla, Mitchell, Flannigan, and Campbell (a bit untested there!) to beat Crawford, Beltran, and Dejan :??
I'd say Dejan is about Euro level and Ricky arguably won fix or six rounds, so I'd still consider him at least a Euro level fighter, and I don't think Mitchell and co. are at a higher level even at this point in Burns's career. Let's not forget that Mitchell was down 6-4 in his last bout, which came against someone even less proven than Dejan, and far less proven and probably significantly worse than Crawford and Beltran.
I'd favor Burns to beat Mitchell again, though I wouldn't be highly confident.

As I stated in my original post, it's not about who I think would win but where each fighter is in terms of a title shots right now. Burns is a step down for Mitchell who is on the cusp of a title shot, whilst Burns is in rebuilding mode.Horse wrote:Well I'd consider Burns to be a big step up for Mitchell and I'd expect him to lose again.Taansend wrote:Mitchell just won a final eliminator (although the next day weight thing didn't help) whereas Burns hasn't won his last three.
Kevin is looking at fighting for a title whereas Ricky is looking at just getting a win.
In career terms right now, a Burns fight is a step back for Mitchell.

I doubt Mitchell will fight someone better than Burns in his next fight.

I think Burns was on the decline before the jaw break, I honestly think Mitchell would beat him now.

It IS a step down if he can fight for a title in his next fight.Horse wrote:It's not a step down though.Taansend wrote:As I stated in my original post, it's not about who I think would win but where each fighter is in terms of a title shots right now. I do not understand your difficulty in getting this point. And I ain't saying that as a dig.
I'm not saying that Mitchell will beat Burns or is a better fighter, but since their bout Mitchell has won a few & a final eliminator whereas Burns has drawn & lost a couple.
Mitchells next fight should be for a world title - therefore a fight against Burns would be a step down for him. Burns is at least two fights away from a title shot - and I might be generous in that.
Re: Burns vs Mitchell 2 if it occured
As poor as burns has looked recently, he's looked less shot than Mitchell did last time. Kevin looked like he'd lost a step in hand speed. So for me still burns. Although burns now or Mitchell per burns I would go for Kevin.
Re: Burns vs Mitchell 2 if it occured
Yes, I think some people are overlooking Mitchell's last performance because he won (the result hardly tells the full story) and because Ricky's had a higher profile decline. I think Kevin's last opponent was probably worse than Burns's and Mitchell did about just as poorly for the large majority of the fight.stujones wrote:As poor as burns has looked recently, he's looked less shot than Mitchell did last time. At this point it seems fairly close though. If this happens I'd like to see Burns pick up a win and get some momentum and perhaps confidence back first.

It's a step down from a fight that he probably won't get? In reality it isn't a step down.Taansend wrote:It IS a step down if he can fight for a title in his next fight.

Mitchell's next fight should not be for a world title. He does not deserve a world title shot.Taansend wrote:I'm not saying that Mitchell will beat Burns or is a better fighter, but since their bout Mitchell has won a few & a final eliminator whereas Burns has drawn & lost a couple.

I predicted Ricky on point for the first fight and was surprised at how comfortably he won
Ricky has declined since but i still think he'd win, it would be closer but i still fancy Ricky for a narrow points win

I think Mitchell is about as deserving of a World title shot as Paul Smith and has even less chance of winning one. I don't see how anyone has him as world class.

He has had a band of loyal, slightly deluded fans since his amateur days. Always had a slightly skewed rating. Good fighter with lots of ability but world class fighters bash him up. Could be argued that those that bashed him up weren't top of the tree either. Katsidis could never beat the top guys and was shop worn when he was brough over to lose.mickey1975 wrote:I think Mitchell is about as deserving of a World title shot as Paul Smith and has even less chance of winning one. He doesnt deserve a title shot again, but he's done significantly more in his career than Smith. it's not even close

Have to take the Gonzalez fight into consideration too, he just doesn't look the same fighter after the Mitchell fightcrusader wrote:Would you back Crolla, Mitchell, Flannigan, and Campbell (a bit untested there!) to beat Crawford, Beltran, and Dejan :??

Re: Burns vs Mitchell 2 if it occured
Gonzalez was a stylistic nightmare, slick, big punching switch hitter was always going to be difficult for him and he still got the job done, even in the first couple of rounds of the Beltran fight he looked pretty comfortable until the jaw went, after that he hasn't been the same, but he hasn't been beat up or anything, just looks like all confidence has gone from him. I'm with crusader, he's somewhere around European level, give him a couple of confidence boosters and he's still the best lightweight in the country by far.jackukmma wrote:Have to take the Gonzalez fight into consideration too, he just doesn't look the same fighter after the Mitchell fightcrusader wrote:Would you back Crolla, Mitchell, Flannigan, and Campbell (a bit untested there!) to beat Crawford, Beltran, and Dejan :??

True, but how does he compare with the Mitchell who was clearly losing to untested Maduma for 10 rounds? I also don't doubt that even the regressed Burns would handily beat fighters like Mikheil Avakyani, Karim El Ouazghari, and Sebastien Benito.jackukmma wrote:Have to take the Gonzalez fight into consideration too, he just doesn't look the same fighter after the Mitchell fightcrusader wrote:Would you back Crolla, Mitchell, Flannigan, and Campbell (a bit untested there!) to beat Crawford, Beltran, and Dejan :??

Maduma looked excellent at the start of the Mitchell fight, luckily for Kevin he faded fast,i wonder how he would've fared against Zlaticanin
Re: Burns vs Mitchell 2 if it occured
Yep, I think his fights with Katsidis and Burns show where Mitchell is relative to world class fighters. He has never been more than a European level fighter in my view.lillywhite14 wrote:He has had a band of loyal, slightly deluded fans since his amateur days. Always had a slightly skewed rating. Burns is totally finished and although Mitchell isn't far behind I think I would have him as my slight favourite.
As for some of the other lightweights, I reckon Terry Flannighan would handle both, Crolla would give both a good run but just fall short, Campbell to early for him, Coyle will lose to both, Mathews would be a war but he would lose to both
