Best boxer at retirement
Which boxer do you think retired at the highest peak?

Hagler retired after a defeat and had been slipping. Gene was at the top.

Tunney seems like a good pick.
Not too many others better than Hagler though.
Carlos Monzon had slipped a bit, but was still at a pretty high level.

Monzon is right up there for sure.

i'm not an expert on this fighter but stanley ketchel seemed to go out near his peak ,not saying he's no1 but top 10 at least

I always thought Calzaghe walked away too soon.
Re: Best boxer at retirement
Well I wouldn't call that retiring . Same with Paul Williams.0stevedoc wrote:i'm not an expert on this fighter but stanley ketchel seemed to go out near his peak ,not saying he's no1 but top 10 at least

Also:
László Papp and Myung-Woo Yuh seemed like they had a lot left at retirement.Admittedly Papp "got retired" by his government more than he actually retired on his own

He was shot while still young although I've read that he was pretty much washed up by this time.
Re: Best boxer at retirement
Lennox Lewis...I know he was past his prime but still good enough to beat Klit!

Re: Best boxer at retirement
I have no doubt Vitali could've beaten 100% of the heavyweights when he retired

I think I read that somewhere too and couldn't understand why it was thought that he was washed up. He won his last few fights handily, and Ketchel had a tough 6 round no-decision with Langford just 6 months before his death.Tomasino wrote:stevedoc wrote:i'm not an expert on this fighter but stanley ketchel seemed to go out near his peak ,not saying he's no1 but top 10 at least

I remember Donnie Penelton, he was almost at his peak when he retired. No one knows why and left a lot of people stunned. Strange thing boxing.
Re: Best boxer at retirement
Indeed, If he stuck about for one more bout, slapped the sh!t out of Carl Froch, then walked away, we might have had about 6000 less threads in the british forum!HomicideHenry wrote:I always thought Calzaghe walked away too soon.
I still think Calzaghe timed it just about perfect. He probably had 3 or 4 good wins in him, but it was the fact he had beat the best in his last 4 fights and had nothing left to prove.
His best came late in his career, but I was glad when he quit, I think repeated hand injuries probably helped make his mind up too

Joe was shot when he quit. His chin & balance was well in decline, No way he gets put down or even close against them versions of Hopkins or RJJ 2 years previously. Had he fought a Froch type guy soon after i have no doubt he would have lost. Kessler would have beaten him in a rematch around then at either 168 or 175. The only trick he missed before retirement was not fighting Pavlik before Bhop got there.davie wrote:Indeed, If he stuck about for one more bout, slapped the sh!t out of Carl Froch, then walked away, we might have had about 6000 less threads in the british forum!HomicideHenry wrote:I always thought Calzaghe walked away too soon.
