Hagler retired after a defeat and had been slipping. Gene was at the top.

He was shot while still young although I've read that he was pretty much washed up by this time.

I think I read that somewhere too and couldn't understand why it was thought that he was washed up. He won his last few fights handily, and Ketchel had a tough 6 round no-decision with Langford just 6 months before his death.

I still think Calzaghe timed it just about perfect. He probably had 3 or 4 good wins in him, but it was the fact he had beat the best in his last 4 fights and had nothing left to prove.

His best came late in his career, but I was glad when he quit, I think repeated hand injuries probably helped make his mind up too

Joe was shot when he quit. His chin & balance was well in decline, No way he gets put down or even close against them versions of Hopkins or RJJ 2 years previously. Had he fought a Froch type guy soon after i have no doubt he would have lost. Kessler would have beaten him in a rematch around then at either 168 or 175. The only trick he missed before retirement was not fighting Pavlik before Bhop got there.
