Boxers after retirement

Post by lefty »

I was just wondering, what do a lot of these guys end up doing work wise after they retire? I mean outside of the ones who become trainers or whatever. A lot of them retire and then we never hear anything from or about them ever again so yeah just curious really.

Sadly, the theme for many retired boxers is bankruptcy, particularly in the US.

I always imagine a lot of retired boxers in the UK go on to run/own pubs, it's what I'd do if I'd made a decent but not spectacular return from fighting.

It could be a decent article for Boxing Monthly, detailing some interesting or unusual post-boxing careers.

Define 'many' if you could? By any definition of many I would use, not many retired boxers end up bankrupt. Many may end up potless but that's not necessarily the same as bankrupt.

You may as well go and throw all your money out the window than run a pub.
If you think some promoters/managers are ruthless in boxing, they are nothing compared to the vast majority of pub companies. They let license holders plough all their money in, before forcing them out.

That sounds like the bitter knowledge of experience. You're right, of course, the pub trade is even harder than boxing. Out of the frying pan into the fire.

Ovil McKenzie is a doorman ain't he? He seems to have a good balance. Young pro's should go to collage/Uni and get qualifications in fitness & nutrition. Not only will it benefit them in their career, it will also give them a back-up plan come retirement.

Yeah it's a tough industry with hugely squeezed margins at the moment. Not saying it's an easy way to make a living, just always imagined many former boxers going on to run pubs. (Actually I can now only think of Gavin Rees & Tom Cribb off the top of my head, but I'm sure there's a load in between!)

I think that this question should be more specific , If your talking about a lot of say pro boxers who were up there but never quite made any money , i'm sure we can come up with dozens , hundreds , perhaps thousands who had hard times after , based purely on the fact a lot of these more talented guys never got an education .

But if you want to talk about , say an average boxer , with average or better education , well i think you will be suprised how many have done well , I myself was only average , i only had education till the age of 13 , but i managed to retire early, financially secure . I cast my mind back to a lot of lads i trained with , or later in life trained them ,, and a awful lot have done very well , working for themselves running small buisnesses ,, I don't know any who are has smart has Bill Gates , or will have has much has him ,, but by and large , i think the drive that made them a boxer , makes them reasonnably succesful

Obviously thats not everyone , but it does apply to a lot .

Steve Roberts (Light middle from West Ham) retired to run a B&B in Scotland.

Apart from that I've known many boxers (lower level) who went on to do "door work" at pubs & clubs

Earnie was more of a greeter, mate, to my knowledge (and I may be wrong) he never really got involved in bouncing people in the traditional sense. He's big mates with Kenny Rainford, the work he did on Merseyside was with him.

I know two youth workers, a bus driver, a factory worker, two in prison, two other criminals, a plasterer, an unlicensed promoter, a prison officer, a mental health worker and a gym owner! That's off the top of my head out of people I know, so basically anything!

More and more seem to be understandably going into fitness-related activities such as PT.

:TU: I wasn't sure. I seem to remember he was bringing a book out at one time, must have been about 20 years ago. not sure if it ever materialised.

Didn't Reid do his porn work in the middle of his boxing career when he was on a bit of a slump? I might be wrong (I haven't seen the films!), but I seem to remember that was the case, I'm sure I remember Ian Darke referring to it before a fight.
