This just showed up on YouTube. I guess it's your video? Looking forward to watching it.
Re: Larry Holmes v Roy Williams
So for those that have watched the YouTube video, what did you think? I'd never seen Williams before. Big guy but seemed to fight at a sparring partners pace. Holmes wasn't as sharp as he would be later but he was pretty energetic & you can see the talent. A decent fight. Solid but not the "holy grail" it's been thought as. Just similar to a lot of Holmes Pre championship fights. Worth seeing though.

Re: Larry Holmes v Roy Williams
I really enjoyed watching this fight. I've waited a long time to see this, and I wasn't disappointed. I wouldn't say it was a thriller, but it had my full attention from beginning to end.
Holmes won the first round literally single handed, I've never seen a boxer throw so many jabs, and every one was a beauty. Not as powerful as the one he would use in the 80's, but quicker and the sound they made was like a baseball bat whacking an animal carcass. He was moving constantly and it was the last 30 seconds of the round before Williams even tried to throw anything back.
Holmes' work became rugged very quickly though, he seemed to be exhausted by the 3rd round, and much of the fight was fought toe to toe, constantly trading punches. Holmes' workrate made the difference for me, and he showed a nice variety of punches, particularly making good use of his uppercut.
Holmes has always claimed that he wasn't comfortable taking this fight, and wanted more time to prepare, and I think his conditioning here bears that out. Anyone watching this fight looking for comparisons to modern day fighters would probably conclude that either Klitschko would overpower him after 6 or 7 rounds. I'm way too much of a Holmes fan to entertain that, but I think it would be interesting to watch either Klitschko in their 20th pro fight and make a comparison.
As for Williams, I was impressed with his workrate for a big man, (6'5", 238.5lb). He made Holmes work for every second of the fight and he wasn't discouraged by Holmes' jab. He had Holmes pretty wobbly in the last round. I can see why Holmes wasn't too keen on taking this fight without a long training camp.

Larry Holmes had an injured left shoulder which was why he did not want the fight with Roy Williams however Don King forced him to fight.
Larry was very pissed off at Don King but understanding the control that Don was yielding at the time he figured he might as well go along with it rather than defy his promoter King.

The first time Wladimir encountered a man somewhere close to Tiger - i.e. durable, fearless, large, strong, swinging back - he became exhausted and totally unravelled.witherspoon wrote: Holmes has always claimed that he wasn't comfortable taking this fight, and wanted more time to prepare, and I think his conditioning here bears that out. Vladimir Klitschko would seperatel Roy"Tiger"Williams fromf his senses with a brutal left hook such as what he recently done to the Bulgarian.
Although if perhaps they did manage to find a way to drug Vladimir Klitschko shortly before
he enters the ring and wouldnt take effect until a few rounds like what happened(apparently) when Vladimir fought
"The real Rocky" some years back.

Re: Larry Holmes v Roy Williams
Good fight. Williams showed both why he was feared and why his career never really got off the ground. His defense was excellent; he was extremely relaxed in the ring. He had quick hands, was a good counter puncher and had a killer left hook. But he hardly puts two punches together, and I think puts together more than two only once or twice. He fough in sparring partner mode too much. Still a close fight. Holmes showed the grit and determination that would make him a great champion, although he was clearly still developing as a fighter. Look at him come forward moving his head a la Frazier in the last two rounds. He was tired but bit down and won the fight.

I was going to say, if there's something really rare on youtube, stop being such a boomer and rip it!
Re: Larry Holmes v Roy Williams
Its not just that ; the guy who had it originally knew how it worked, so he sold it to lots of people at the same instant because he needed the money at that time. He asked that the collectors would keep it to themsleves, knowing deep down they wouldn't...and he proved to be correct because in 5 minutes it was on Youtube

Re: Larry Holmes v Roy Williams
but it ain't there now.
BTW whether it was telecast live or not.
did the video footage have commercial breaks in it ?
if not they may have just been doing it as a test transmission before the main event came up
Ali vrs Young.
I do remember some of those prime time boxing shows were about 3 hours long.
maybe that one was scheduled only for 2 hours.

Doesn't surprise me... Imagine having good intentions and keeping your word, only to find out that it was basically given away for free after you just got done paying a pretty penny for that footage. I suppose that the "originator" was burned plenty of times before and basically did what was best for him, but it still sucks for everyone else. At the end of the day, I and many others have benefited from this particular fight being posted for free, so I guess I personally can't complain.evrenb wrote: ↑27 Oct 2020, 14:14 Its not just that ; the guy who had it originally knew how it worked, so he sold it to lots of people at the same instant because he needed the money at that time. Don King probably has on video/ film, probably every fight card that he ever promoted in his library.
( maybe even the exhibition with Ali for the charity for the Cleveland Hospital that got him into the fight buisness)

Re: Larry Holmes v Roy Williams
does the video footage show any commercial breaks between any of the rounds ?
If not, maybe they only broadcasted it to the ABC live feed news truck for testing the signal and to get ready for the main event
(Muhammad Ali vrs Jimmy Young) when it was to air live.
