The jury is still out on whether he is a total nutter or simply a new wave comedian having a laugh.

I thought the latter for a while but now favour the former as he invests way too much time in it for it to be simply a wind-up.

Plus he's been doing it for years before he even appeared here. So, if it is some kind of elaborate 'joke', he's taking a long time to deliver the punch line.

From what I remember it was very one sided beating, I imagine the only thing it done to Ali was to hurt his left hand from the number of punches he hit Coopman with.

'floored' in the 2nd-Round by.........'Lisimo Obute' in Izgem, Belgium.

That qualified Jean-Pierre as a Challenger for the World Heavyweight Championship
set for February 20, 1976.

I don't think anyone will argue that Coopman did deserve a title shot, he had an awful record and it was an easy fight for a declining Ali. Love him or hate him Ali fought in the toughest HW era and fought and beat better quality opposition than any HW champion you care to mention, even you have to concede that one?

As to the criticism that any decent heavyweight would have KO'd Coopman in 2 rounds---I think it was apparent watching the bout that Ali was merely going thru the motions in one of his softest title defenses. If he had opened up, he could have stopped the challenger whenever he chose.
Ali later said that he promised CBS that he would allow Coopman to last a few rounds so the network could get some commercials in. I believe it.
The "fight" was a walkover.

Yes, this should not even be a question or a topic, Coopmans, would make Jody Ballard look like Muhammad Ali, he would have had hell beating anyone in the top 200, Ali was taking a day off plain and simple, after a 32-5 record vs major contenders and champs, he kinda deserved one but not the lion of flounders!

COOPMANS COULD NOT HAVE HURT ALI WITH A CONCEALED WEOPON, AL'S EZIEST FIGHT, NEXT TOO THE LISTON FARCE II. no he took nothing away from Ali, not even a decent workout, all ali's sparring partners and some of their wives could have beat the "Lion of Flounders!"
