I'll look forward to it if it gets made but both men should be ashamed this fight never happened years ago when the fans demanded it,now they"ll both line their pockets
I can easily think of 5 fights I'd rather see this year.maybe 10

I think it's not the fight that has lost its appeal but the false starts, rumours, broken promises, Mayweather excuses etc etc that have made people jaded and bored.
However as soon as the fight gets made, everyone will go apesh1t over it and it will be the biggest story in sport.

Quoted for truth. Both 3 years past their respective best ,fairly easy Mayweather UD now with maybe a couple of slight scares in the 12 rounds it lasts.handsofstone wrote:I'll look forward to it if it gets made but both men should be ashamed this fight never happened years ago when the fans demanded it,now they"ll both line their pockets

The whole episode is an example of what`s wrong with Boxing in a nutshell.

The Maidana fights.[/quoteBoxerbeetle wrote:jaymitch81 wrote:What evidence is there to suggest that FM is way past his best?Boxerbeetle wrote:I'd obviously still watch it, but it's definitely lost it's true mega-fight status for me. Not particularly because Manny got sparked by JMM, just that both fighters seem way past their best now.
Re: Has Manny v Floyd lost it's appeal??
I think it's a more competitive fight now than 2 years ago. Mayweather will be 38 and he looked slower and had depleted stamina versus Maidana.

If you see no difference between the Mayweather that struggled past Maidana & the Mayweather that fought N'Dou, Corrales or Gatti, I'd suggest that you don't really know what you're watching.jaymitch81 wrote:The Maidana fights.[/quoteBoxerbeetle wrote:jaymitch81 wrote: What evidence is there to suggest that FM is way past his best?

Re: Has Manny v Floyd lost it's appeal??
i think its actually a closer fight now than it was a few years ago
Pacquio looking sharp in past few fights , mayweather not as untouchable as he was
Still a major fight and both still great fighters so must watch and must happen this year
the fact is they will both be really up for it also so both can produce on the night as they are both a threat to each other.

It stinks that these two haven't fought already.
Both of them are to blame, along with the promoters in some way, but I blame Mayweather the most, because he is one the one driving the bus, so to speak.
If he had demanded that the Manny fight happened with no ifs or buts, it would have happened.
Promotional, contractual & televisual obstacles can be overcome if the will is there & the fight is big enough.
They did it with Lewis -v- Tyson in 2002; they could have done it with Mayweather -v- Pacquiao in 2009 too, I'm sure of it.
Like I have said many times, I will watch it when they eventually lock zimmer frames, but a bout between these two now does not excite me like it once did & there are other fights I would much rather see in 2015.

That's not entirely fair. Mayweather made a non-standard but entirely reasonable request about blood testing that the tattooed Pacquiao refused on the basis of needles.Syntax Error wrote:Absolutely right.handsofstone wrote:I'll look forward to it if it gets made but both men should be ashamed this fight never happened years ago when the fans demanded it,now they"ll both line their pockets

If either of them had really wanted it, it would have happened due to the potential money on the table. They both saw it as a risk though and would rather be able to dictate financial terms on smaller purses (still huge) rather than split a sum that has never been seen in boxing.

Honestly id rather see khan against either

I agree with the top line, but not the 2nd. I would like to see Khan against both but not before the 2 fight one another.gazza8 wrote:Its not lost its appeal but i dont think its quite the fight it would have been 4 years ago

I hope it does happen cos even tho' we all know it would have meant more when it should have happened, it's still a mouth watering clash and would be a great night of aniticpation like all big fight nights are and like only boxing can produce.

Looks like May 2nd, 7 years too late - one for the ages has now turned into a busted flush.
I was always a Pac Man fan, and really don't like Floyd much, but it's clear to me that Pac Man is to blame this happened too late. Refusing to take the tests, and I think we can guess why...now he's presumably conquered his $40 million dollar fear of needles - he's come clean, so to speak, just in time to collect his retirement fund.

I would have tried my damnedest to get a tick 4 years ago, and would have been in Vegas chasing a tick like a dog. Will not be going now, but would stay up for it.

Re: Has Manny v Floyd lost it's appeal??
I am a 'casual' and whilst it is happening years too late, it's definitely better late than never.lillywhite14 wrote:It's not what it was. The casuals will be more excited I think.
Got a couple of mates who are creaming themselves over the potential fight, talking about trying to get tickets etc
I'm not particularly fussed. Not sure it's that relevant now, other than to line their pockets and create a massive event. I have always thought Floyd beats him, with a little bit to spare but now I think Pac has virtually no chance.
I know you hardcore fans would prefer two credits to the sport banging away at each other in front of 50 people in York Hall, but Mayweather/Pacquiao is the most important fight in boxing as it is the only fight out there that transcends the sport.
I really hope it happens (at last)
Re: Has Manny v Floyd lost it's appeal??
Still the biggest fight out there to draw the casuals in. Plus, most casuals won't realise that both men aren't at the top of their game anymore. Perhaps a little bit like 'Leonard v Hagler' or the 'Ali v Fraser III'.
Re: Has Manny v Floyd lost it's appeal??
Its lost its appeal to me, its still a good fight i'd like to see but 5 or 6 years ago this was a 50/50 fight but as time has moved on i expect Floyd to win relatively easily.

Yes.
It's like reading about Kirsty Gallagher promising to strip off - piss off luv, you are twenty years too damn late!
This pair are ready to cash out and this is what it is - a pension fund fight. It isn't about you - the loyal fans! A good six years too
late!

This is the perfect analogy. 8)
Re: Has Manny v Floyd lost it's appeal??
I definitely think people are pissed off at the long drawn process, especially as it seemed practically signed when both were in pomp (remember Darke announcing it as ON during a Sky show).
BUT..... seeing them both together at the Basketball game, I did momentary lose control of my bladder with excitement.
Get signed and the appeal with be huge, not doubt.

Re: Has Manny v Floyd lost it's appeal??
It would still be exciting to see it finally, but it's lost a lot of it's appeal definitely as both have gone past their peak, especially Manny.
Imagine this 4-5 years ago, it would have been phenomenal and they could have had a trilogy of fights. Floyd is a pussy, no other excuse for it.

Both Tommy Hearns and Sugar Ray Leonard were absolutely lethal when they met each other first time round, and could have easily foud ways not to face eachother, but they are remembered as greats because of the willingness to test themselves as well as their skill levels.TheCobra wrote:It would still be exciting to see it finally, but it's lost a lot of it's appeal definitely as both have gone past their peak, especially Manny.

Manny should have agreed to take the drug tests years ago, but equally, I get the impression that Mayweather would have moved the goalposts again had he done so.
After the hatton/cotto fights, and it would have been Leonard/Hearn 1 level in terms of standing in history and anticipation, but now it will be Hearns/Leonard 2. I am no longer excited by this fight as it won't prove who was the best in their primes.
Re: Has Manny v Floyd lost it's appeal??
It's not too late if Manny wins. I think many would delight in it if he took Floyd's '0'.
Re: Has Manny v Floyd lost it's appeal??
I voted 'yes' that its lost its appeal.
Not totally true though. Its definitely lost some of its appeal, but its still probably the most interesting fight out there. Should definetly have happened 3 years ago

I always thought Floyd would have schooled a prime roided out Pac Man. Right now I think it would be a one sided beating. I'd much rather see either of them vs Khan.

Re: Has Manny v Floyd lost it's appeal??
I always thought there was a point, about maybe 6 years ago, where many could have given Floyd a torrid time, the combination of handspeed, power and angles and the high output, I thought would have made Floyd work, and also be negative to the point where he could have been beaten on points, and possibly dragged into deep water.
I think that moment has passed, Manny isn't that guy any more, but here's the thing.
Floyd has slowly turned into B-hop, less and less shots, more and more potshotting, and defensive masterwork, and the fact is, if they finally do fight, it will ALL be on the line legacy wise. I think Pacman can get up for this fight, in a way he hasn't for many years.
Manny has reached the point where he is no longer hungry financially, and doesn't want to hurt people, but he knows that a fight with Floyd represents his legacy, and even at this stage, when both men are past their prime, Manny arguably more so, there's still the potential for a great fight.
People underestimate Floyd's toughness, and also his punchpower - much like Pernell Whitakker. Nobody gets to the eschelons Floyd has, without being able to tough it out now and then, and also hit hard enough to keep your opponent honest.
It's still a great fight - it probably won't produce the fireworks it would have done 5-6 years ago, but make no mistake, it's still between two future hall of famers, and ATG's, and there's a huge amount on the line.
I think this fight may surprise people, in what is on show. Floyd could turn puncher, many turn boxer, anything could happen, it still has that x-factor. Yes I wish it had happened at the point it should have done, but will I tune in, will I pay to see it - your bet your sweet ass I will.
