Nothing that weird.
Best fight I saw close up, ringside was Ingle - McMillan at York hall. When you're that close to world class fighters, you see how tough it is in there at that level.
I met Johnny Tapia. After his fight in the dressing room, at York hall.
At York hall I was watching Lockett vs Nembhard I think. There were two Jamaican girls dressed like cheap hookers screaming at Lockett calling him a 'batty bwoy' etc. not for long as Gary smashed their guy.
Also York hall watching Takaloo - Alexander. And seeing Alexander wince as Tak hit him in the body.... But missing Wayne's finisher and bizarrely mentally 'waiting' for the replay.... Even though it was live.
Hatton - Mayweather was a trip. But after a week in Vegas, I just wanted to get home. Brits doing coke around me, the American guy behind me telling me he was going to use his taser on the loud Brits and showing it to me. (No idea how he got it in, there were security checks and you had to walk through the metal detector.)
The Americans were so pissed off at the Brits booing their anthem and some Manc guy offered me out at the airport on the way home. The boxing was ruined by the ref, and the screens were sh1t so we just watched two ants fighting as we were so far away from the ring, despite the charlatan telling us the tickets were outer ringside.

Hatton-Kostya was the best atmosphere, crazy, crazy night. Wharton-Carr 1 was probably my favourite as I was only 15 and was with all my mates. Enjoyed Froch-Groves 1, too. Great fight, great atmosphere and a bit of controversy as well. There was a real sense of shock when Froch hit the deck in the first. Never enjoyed any stadium fight/event with the only exception Frank Grant upsetting Herol Graham.

Small hall show? Swaby vs Dowling in Newark - though they are both Lincoln lads, the crowd that night were massively pro-Dowling - that was a cracking experience right there.
Re: Best Experience at a live fight
Frankie Gavin vs Junior Witter at York hall. The collective heartbeat in the room was racing. The action was non stop. The anticipation was so unbearable that when the fight actually began some people passed out from excitement.
Three punches were landed in that fight. Each one was the best I've ever seen.

Re: Best Experience at a live fight
Hunter vs. Pickering was a great fight to be at. Well it was a brilliant fight really. Hunter got dumped twice in the first two rounds so that kind of sh*t tends to galvanize a home crowd. Both men put on a great fight and any show at the Hartlepool Borough Hall is terrific anyway for atmosphere.
I can remember the first time I ever went there and Kevin Bennett came out to fight Gary Ryder, I think, the place nearly lifted off, it was awesome
, but then Bennett lost, unfortunately.
I also had a great time at Khan v. Barrera. MAB got a great reception that night - in fact they both did.

I've always thought that Kings Hall sounds a great venue there. Is Belfast a safe place to go for an English bloke nowadays? I know they've gone in for tourism in the last few years and naturally I am sure it's full of mostly lovely people, but it would once have been a bit of a no-go area.Coco wrote:In fairness the Belfast nights always stand out

I went to the Ulster Hall in 2009 mate and made a weekend of it.
You've just got to have your wits about you.
The town centre has three unofficial zones. Catholic Protestant and Neutral.
Stick to the neutral and everything is great.
The Northern Irish are warm friendly people and personally had a great time with the Missus as well in tow.

Shaking B hops hand at ringside after he beat Pascal in Montreal to become oldest ever champion. He looked xhausted and had been doing push ups during the round, the effort he put into not looking tired was impressive and an insight to the legend that is hop.
Also, i mention this a lot on here, but the atmosphere at MSG for Cotto vs Margarito 2 was insane. I'm being serious when i say my head was in agony for 4 hours after the fight from the sheer noise. Did anyone else get to that fight?

Re: Best Experience at a live fight
Lee v Korobov. Even though I have been over a dozen times, it was the first fight I have watched a fight in Vegas. The KO finish and seeing that WBO belt being lofted high by a fellow Irishman fighting in Vegas was brilliant. After the show I walked out of the arena and bumped into Lee with Richard Towers and Adam Booth and got photos and Booth even allowed me to hold the belt - unbelievable. Towers and Booth were cool to speak with and Lee was just buzzing off the Irish fans who were all chanting his name, brilliant moment - like Disneyland for adults - buzzing the whole night after - and I hardly touched a beer. My brother in law went with me and it was his first boxing show and he experienced all of this too - he loved it. The buzz and atmosphere around the fights in Vegas is brilliant and its great to see some of the Mexican and upcoming US prospects on the card as well. I walked up to the MGM after the fight and met a few fighters coming out of the presser from the Khan-Alexander card and got some photos beside the big boxing ring they erect in the lobby of the MGM. Gonna go back to Vegas this year for a fight card - brilliant experience.

Lennox Lewis decimating Razor Ruddock.
For months before that fight, all I heard is how can Lewis beat a man who went 19 rounds with Tyson etc.
Devastating performance that even though I tipped Lewis to win, against most odds, I never thought for a minute he'd pulverise Ruddock the way he did.
Great night.
PS: Also had some great nights in small halls watching Paul "Scrap Iron" Ryan: not a great fighter by any stretch, but hugely entertaining to watch.

Yeah, the atmosphere at the fight was amazing. People were so charged to see this legend at the York Hall (must have been similar to seanilius's Gavin-Witter experience LoL.)Bleak wrote:reggaereggae wrote:Nothing that weird.

The fight only lasted a round unfortunately.... I so wanted to see more of his skills, mathough even in a round they were sublime.
As to meeting him after the fight, he seemed to be partially buzzing, but there was also a kind of sadness in his eyes I thought. He was very friendly, though seemed really emotional.... I think he also loved the welcome. As I say, the hall was absolutely buzzing, and those smaller venues can be very intimate for the fighter. In his book he says he was always happiest in the ring, and felt safest.
I had a nice photo with him.

that was a great victory, did huge thinks for lewis's confidence it seemed, but probably more for the publics confidence in him.Syntax Error wrote:Lennox Lewis decimating Razor Ruddock.

To be honest, they all were,i had my photo taken with Duran and Lewis and got autographs from Leonard and Barkley, who was very friendly.Dave Green bought me a beer and unfortunately Hagler only said hello as he was in a rush to get to the commentary position for the fight. Also that week i spent 15 mins with Vinny Pazienza, got photos and autograph, what a very nice fella he is.95gerog wrote:bigjack wrote:I spent a week in vegas when i went to watch Leonard v Lalonde, during the week i met Leonard,Duran, Lennox Lewis,Dave boy Green,Iran Barkley and very briefly,Hagler

Re: Best Experience at a live fight
For me it would have to be my first live fight - McDonnell vs Nelson. I was a starry-eyed teenager and the whole weekend was an adventure - going down to London, first time at the Albert Hall, great undercard with Lewis, Eubank and Hide. There was a good six-rounder as well just before the main event with two smaller guys (I can't remember their names). The main event was a great fight too, it seemed closer from where I was than when I've watched it back afterwards. Maybe also because of the support for Jim.
After the fight I loitered around to see if anything was happening or if someone famous would turn up. Jim Watt suddenly appeared looking for a taxi and I said hello to him and had a chat. He's a top bloke. I went home on a proper high that night.
I've been to some cracking fights since but that's the one that stands out for me.
