I've always liked the honesty and directness of the book review section. Long may it continue.

he also absolutely ridiculed a book by someone called springs Toledo as I remember.

A month or so afterwards, I saw the same book advertised in boxing monthly on a full page.

It seemed to have had some positive reviews in the USA for whatever that's worth.

Can't remember the title....anyone read it!?!

Yes thought I'd imagined that terrible review, when I saw that ad...I can only imagine the awkward conversation the boxing monthly advertising guy had with Springs when he took out the ad. Hilarious quotes on the cover of his book, which mainly seemed to be along the lines of "this guy is the greatest boxing writer of all time ! ( now where's my cheque? )"

Yeah that publication is all a bit weird. I've never heard of the guy. Anyone heard of the legendary boxing scribe 'Springs Toledo'? Has he ever worked in boxing and if so,what did he do? Does he have any rich relatives in boxing?
What kind of name is 'Springs' anyway?

I'll see if I can download a preview on kindle....

That's some bio. "A master of the narrative." It does, however, beg the question: which one?

Also, I absolutely fvcking love John Exshaw. Any idea which issue that Toledo tome was reviewed in, please?

Christ, okay I've read some of Springs Toledo's "stuff" now.

EDIT: Splitting that discussion off into another thread because, giving the matter more thought than it possibly deserves, I don't think Zeferino Jackson could be the master hoaxer behind Toledo, because Toledo churns out awkward sub-Runyonesque drivel that is so cringeworthy I think it might actually be real...

I read some of the 'master of narrative's masterpieces and they're risible.

Over written, purple prose.... They're almost a parody. Really awful. I wouldn't even say pretentious as that implies some level of skill. His stuff is just a mash up of words and overwritten prose.

It's all very odd. This guy (who is clearly in love with himself judging by every official photo of him I see) 'springs' out of nowhere (boom boom), no background in boxing or writing as far as I can make out, is hailed by various boxing sources as a literary genius (although completely monstered by J Exshaw)....

Anyone read the book or heard of boxing's contemporary Shakespeare?!? 8)

The most interesting thing on that (review) page is a photo of Nigel Benn up to some sort of training I'm guessing (as opposed to deejaying).
The book sounds dreadful and not researched to any real extent, however, I'd sooner pass a couple of minutes reading some of its pages than go over such a condescending, pompous, so-good-am-I, and rather tedious review as that by John Exshaw here again. :>

I used to think it was unprofessional of Exshaw to write the way he did, but on reflection I ALWAYS read his reviews and his style does fit well with Glyn's ethos, as does Billy Graham's column. And I prefer it that way. I love an independent approach and its freedom.

I notice Steve Farhood has left and frankly I'm very happy about that. His writing just doesnt work for a British publication. His lame jokes and references will not be missed. Even when I was young I would recognise his writing with his trademark crap similes, head shakingly bland jokes and facile references. Maybe he was brought in to get American readers, but regardless I won't miss his asinine prose.
