Removing the Boots

Post by Cutman Scabbers »

Question: why, when a boxer is knocked out, are those at ringside or in the corner so quick to remove his boots?

I have, but not for that reason. Maybe it's something WBC or WBA thought was an excellent idea at one of their annual piss-ups.....ouch! I mean conventions.
Bit like WBA's recommendation to its regional bodies their titles should be contested over 11 to reduce Draws

David Hayes boots were removed even without a knockdown.

Some guys feel they got better control of their footwork without them. Other times slippery canvas, due to logos

I can't remember seeing this happen after a bout, the gloves - yes, the boots - no.

I've been in boxing for over 35 years and have never seen that. Makes no sense. I've never seen it in American football either and they get players KO'd also.

Just saw it happen a few days ago at an amateur tournament. Dude went down hard from one punch,
trainer and official jumped up and started unlacing his gloves and boots.

What about headgear? One would think that would be the 1st to be removed for breathing

If that's in response to JCS, you're saying that there's been many times that you've seen a fighter's team take off his boots after a knockDOWN??

Regarding knockOUTS, yes, the boots come off asap here in Korea. I see it at every fight show.

Souvenir hunters? :)
Blood circulation was mentioned above. That's what I always assumed.

I'd not like to think how many knockouts I've seen and in all honesty I've never seen anyone take the boots off. If this happens regularly would someone please post a link?

It may be, Cutman - there are some posters on B and I Forum who really know a lot about Eastern and Pacific boxers, they may be able to shed some light.

I looked-up some of the KO's I've witnessed here in Korea, but the camera seems to switch to the winner before you can see the boots get taken off.

Here's a KO that I was ringside for:
(FF to 4:15 for the boots part)
