Why was John Tate picked for the USA Olympic team in 76?
I was just thinking what lead to John Tate being picked at Heavyweight for the USA Olympic team when in early 1976 he was KO'd in the first round by Emory Chapman?
Chapman and Tate met in what I believe was called 'The Tournament Of Champions' in early 1976. Chapman came out aggressively and forced Tate on to the back foot. About half way through the opening round Tate unleashed a big overhand right, Chapman slipped it and connected with his own straight right and Tate went down.....Goodnight!!!!
So what happened next that meant Tate got to be on the Olympic team?

John Tate 76 olympics
Stinson was in the trials. Chapman had a bad hand which may have determined this. He was going into medical school to be a surgeon after boxing at I believe Duke.

Did Jimmy Clark make the trials?ken hissner wrote:Stinson was in the trials. Chapman had a bad hand which may have determined this. He was going into medical school to be a surgeon after boxing at I believe Duke.

Just going by what I have been told by some usually reliable sources Overhand. Below is a related quote.overhand_right wrote:That sounds a bit unrealistic Joseph
"USSR sent both Viktor Ivanov and Vysotsky to the Montreal Olympics 1976 - Vysotsky would be the choice if USSR drew against Cuba. Feeling was that Vysotsky's eyebrows couldn't hold up for the number of fights required."
I have a few amateur fights of both Dokes and Tate on tape but know nothing about them fighting each other. Any more information to share?overhand_right wrote:Tate got the job when he knocked out Michael Dokes in 3 rds.
I know Dokes beat Tate en route to the National Golden Gloves Title back in '76.I think it was a split verdict.KOJOE90 wrote:Just going by what I have been told by some usually reliable sources Overhand. Below is a related quote.overhand_right wrote:That sounds a bit unrealistic Joseph

So Dokes & Tate fought twice as amateurs then?Nile4000 wrote:I know Dokes beat Tate en route to the National Golden Gloves Title back in '76.I think it was a split verdict.KOJOE90 wrote:Just going by what I have been told by some usually reliable sources Overhand. Im struggling to recall Jolene but yes actually i think they fought more than once in the same trials. Dokes initially winning 1 or maybe 2 decisions over Tate, but then Tate beat someone maybe a Jimmy Clark but when it counted in the final fight he iced Dokes in 3 rds im sure i have that on VHS. Why do you think a guy like Dokes wasnt at the 76 Olympics & turned pro that year..?
Dokes also had lost to Teo but by points now i definitely do have that on tape...

Thanks for the info' Geri Curl, I think I have Tate vs Clark on tape myself but will have to check. Along with Dokes vs Stinson along with many others but like yourself am struggling to remember, will have to check to be sure.
I hadn't given that too much thought to be honest, I just assumed he lost to someone in the USA trails, and when I started this thread I wasn't sure who that was. Or I just thought it was just the decision reached by the USA Olympic Boxing Council.overhand_right wrote:Why do you think a guy like Dokes wasnt at the 76 Olympics & turned pro that year..?
Yes, on the Dokes amatuer fights I have they talk about it and they say how Dokes was young at the time (16ish?) and they were keen to get a rematch with The Cuban Missile Launcher.overhand_right wrote:Dokes also had lost to Teo but by points now i definitely do have that on tape...
He may have beaten Teo in a rematch. I know he mentioned that he felt everyone was against him because of his flamboyance, and he got tired of fighting against the same guys.KOJOE90 wrote:overhand_right wrote:Im struggling to recall Jolene but yes actually i think they fought more than once in the same trials. Amazing Dokes was only 16 when he fought Stevenson in 1975. But if he wanted a rematch he should have qualified for the OlympicsKOJOE90 wrote:Yes, on the Dokes amatuer fights I have they talk about it and they say how Dokes was young at the time (16ish?) and they were keen to get a rematch with The Cuban Missile Launcher.
