Payano v Warren

Post by WelshJack »

I must admit I have never seen any of them fight, so would like some opinions on who will win and why.

Interesting fight.

Warren was a standout amateur and is extremely fast, but he doesn't seem to have a lot of pop and has gone under the radar a bit as a pro. Payano was an Olympian himself and seems like a solid but unspectacular type and I could see him being outsped or him getting the better of Warren with pressure.

Warren only has the effective straight left from distance, otherwise he is mainly blazzing fast on the inside where he is slippery in traffic.

Payano basically always throws the same combo with his a pretty round motioned right hook... has some reach on it... followed by the straight left he gradually pushes more and more as the fight progresses. he kind grind with that combo too if it`s effective...meaning he`ll throw right/left/right/left... as long as it lands. The particularity about him is he seems to alway sthrow it from the same position with his opponent. he likes to fire it when his opponent is at 1 or 2 o`clock from him.

IMO the key for Warren would be resisting imposing his speed on the inside where he wi;ll be more suceptible of getting hammered. He should at least resist it for the first half because in the 2nd half, he`ll be too slippery for Payano`s pushed and slowed down left. But he`ll have to be careful with Payano`s hip right hook.

Warren has to play it from distance using the jab, the straight left to the head and body and more importantly use his much superior footwork to create angles and neutralise Payano`s confort spot.

I think Warren can win but he has to have good prep. & execution and more importantly not overcommit on the inside. Payano beat Moreno but it was because of the cut... could he have won the rounds in the second half by maintaining the owrk rate he started with?

We`ll see how he does vs southpaw warren... doubt he can fight at a high enough pace for 12 because warren imo will make him miss a lot.

I am in the dark with these guys and only depending upon paper records. I felt like Rashee had more KO's and that's an important part of the match to me. Let's hope it is a good fight. but make it quick. I need an early KO.

I'm struggling to see how you guys are in the dark with Warren who's fights have been televised... And Payano beat one of the best technical counterpuncher in boxing so it was Worth a look...

I still need to see the first third. The two point penalty had to be the difference. Quite a decent scrap.

Warren certainly has an argument as it was very competitive, but I thought there were too many periods in which he wasn't busy enough and was getting pushed back and hit, albeit not very cleanly, to an extent that outweighed his more accurate spots. He probably landed a higher percentage throughout but he seemed to go to sleep at points and in my view gave away rounds he could've had a much better shot of winning if he were more aggressive.

Can't see how it was clear-cut either way and I wouldn't mind seeing a rematch....very good fight :bag:

Cota-Johnson undercard fight was very enjoyable too (Cota-Willie Nelson would be nice). I hope there are more of these evenly-matched fights in the future.

That's the most entertaining PBC card I recall seeing.

More of that and less of Garcia-shopworn Paulie please.

Thought Payano had it quite comfortably until he got fucked up by the headclash.

Warren didn't execute a winning gameplan... he hung around in the pocket WAY too much

I thought Warren won it 114-110 but there were all close rounds and the ref's actions made it even harder to keep tabs off,was it the 9th that felt like it went on for about 10 minutes with all the stop/start action? I was surprised i had it so wide in when i tallied it up in the end because i agree Rau'shee had spells of just making Payano miss without throwing,i had Warren pulling it out the bag with the last few rounds though,i cant argue with Payano getting the nod though,in all the close rounds he seemed to want it more, strange calls from the ref throughout though

I agree with what's been said on here though, messy fight but thouroughly entertaining
