Going life or death at the Playboy mansion with Alien Grant, or being outboxed by a crude old Sheika.

Those who say he was a beast before he fought Joe, have obviously never seen any other fight other than Reid.

'Bookies Favourite' is another line trundled out, yet I didn't make a great deal backing Joe.

Brian Magee stopped him in amateurs I'm sure.
I backed Calzaghe to the hilt, all the way....until I saw Lacy destroy Reid. In hindsight, I read far too much into that fight, and got far too excited over a single performance against a guy quite a way past his best.
Id have to watch it again, but didn't he fall over about 3 times and the ref counted every one? It looked like he thought balls to it and quit, as he was about 8 points down by the 4th!

I had quite a chat with Rob Reid face to face about that trip, he said it was a shambles and I can't remember exactly what he said, but it was something like he only got a fraction what he should have - and he was put in a hotel hours from nearest boxing gym and basically had to do pads by the swimming pool and pull-ups on the children's playground equipment. He was angry and bitter and completely in the wrong state of mind going into it.

yeah, he got stitched up good and proper, I remember seeing footage of him training in his hotel room, and at the pool.

I bet his management got a right old bollocking.

I always felt a bit sorry for Reid, had such a good early career, one of the youngest british world champs for a long time - but in the long run, it didn't pan out for him.

I still seethe to this day, about the Ottke fight - that complete and utter fit up robbed Reid of some serious paydays, because he should have left with the belt, I still remember his corner telling him that whatever happens he had better not get DQ'd or he wouldn't get paid. Brian hughes I think it was. They'd seen the scorecards, and told him he was losing on all of them despite totally dominating the 1st 6 rounds. Had he won the belt as he should have done, he could have had a couple of defences and made himself some cash at the end of his career.

I seem to recall at the end he got bludgeoned by Lacy - the knockdowns were legit as I remember, he wasn't hurt, but Lacy hit so hard he was bowling him over. Reid eat some serious shots.

Out of interest, what do you think is the biggest win of Bute's career?

Good post. He was consistently having tough times with limited foes before Joe outclassed him and too many only look at the Reid fight, which was an aberration for Lacy.

Magee apparently beat him 17-10, though they could've fought on other occasions.

ttke fight was a travesty. I really felt for Reid.

Slightly off topic but I have heard Reid referree to as a traveller before - any truth to that? I only as because I'm sure Andy Lee's team have claimed he is the first traveller to win a world title?

While Bute has never won a Super Fight, he has some solid wins against Bika, Andrade (first fight was controversial but second fight said enough), a then game Miranda andd Glen Johnson.

I don't rate Bute, but he was atleast an established champion/belt-holder. Unlike Lacy.

IMO - I think Reid's career kind of balances itself out in some ways. The misfortune of the Ottke fight, yes might have cost him paydays - but then by most peoples careers, the Malinga and Branco shambolic efforts (in which he could have got thrown out) would have left him cast aside a lot longer. It took Witter years to get a world title fight after his fight with Judah (when he was a last minute sub). Reid got the opportunity relatively quickly after worse displays.

Reid rode on the crest of taking a one-handed, ill, Calzaghe to a razor tight decision for much of his career. He did well also against Wharton and Ottke, but the rest of his career he flattered to deceive somewhat. Fairly lucky to get a decision vs Hasine Cherifi and blamed Princess Diana for his performance (one of my all time favourite excuses).

I thought he had a cold for the Cherifi fight which accounted for the poor performance?

I don't remember him blaming Princess Diana for it, but I do remember he dedicated the victory to her (actually I remember it vividly, but only because my dad shouted "oh fvck off" and stormed out of the room  ).

Imo the lacey fight meant more out of the two, calzaghe had pulled out of the fight twice and lacey being named the mike tyson of the sm division we all thought joe was scared and on a hiding to nothin. Bute had holes in his game for a few years and anyone who knew about boxing knew froch would of smashed him,i said before the fight froch within 4 rounds only because bute had been rocked before and had never fought anyone like froch before. Out of the two undefeated fighters id say lacey in a similar result to froch vs bute

Reid said the shock over Diana's death had contributed to his poor performance.
``When you have in your mind that the princess of your country has died, you feel emotional about it,'' he said. ``I dedicate this fight to her. My biggest regret is I never got to meet Princess Diana.''

Best excuse ever!

Wasn't the stinkfest with Branco on the same card as Judah vs. Witter as well?

Thinks so - why doesn't that card ever get mentioned in the worst UK ppv's threads.

Judah vs Witter stink fest.
Reid vs Branco stink fest
Tyson vs Savarese - which was a mess.

Anyone who knew about boxing? Many ex-pros and writers picked Bute before-hand. All well and good saying this in hind sight but at the time Bute looked good (albeit in his adopted hometown) and Froch had just been beaten well by Ward.

Personally, I rated Lacy higher pre-Calzaghe than I did Bute pre-Froch.

Lacy I actually believed the hype a bit, and legitimately thought it'd be a tough night's work for Joe. That may have had something to do with Calzaghe's reputation at the time for taking protected fights, but even so I thought Lacy looked the real deal. He wasn't. I was wrong.

Bute, though he was obviously good, was a bit of a home town fighter. I saw the Froch fight in Nottingham as much as a career defining fight for Bute than for his opponent. Froch had at least shown willingness to travel and take risks in his career.

Also don't forget that Calzaghe had looked absolutely crap in a number of his defences prior to Lacy - the Salem fight being a memorable low point. Obviously he was battling hand injuries & going through a messy divorce at the time, but this did sway a lot of people towards picking Lacy.

Boxing Monthly had Bute ranked as number 1 middleweight pretty much throughout the Super Six, if I remember correctly (although I'm sure they did write an article admitting he may not actually be number 1).

Bute wouldn't have faired well in the Super 6 competition. Tough fight after tough fight against top opposition. Not his style.

As did Lacy, as seen by him fighting level for about 8 rounds with a guy who couldn't beat a 14-26 clubfighter less than a year earlier, going close with Vanderpool (who immediately after was knocked out by Bute victim Alejandro Berrio) in his title winning fight, and then having a difficult and close bout with a guy who was 3-3 in his last 6, had been easily beaten by Eric Lucas in his previous title challenge, and had been knocked out by Scott Pemberton earlier that year. Even when he widely beat 14-9 Richard Grant on points he was given a tough fight that was far more competitive than the cards suggest.

All these years later and there are still people who seem to completely overlook these types of outings and perpetuate the myth that Lacy was some type of monster prior to meeting Joe, which I think is clearly bullshitt.......

Anyone remeber Reid dropping ottke, the ref helped him up, didn't count the knock down and seemed to warn Reid for what could only be hitting him to hard! He got completely screwed in that fight.

Roger Tilleman.

He was also a judge in Froch kessler 1 , gave him most rounds and was shaking mikkel's hand furiously at the weigh-in while shooting scornful looks at Carl and McCracken.

Like i said,i knew froch would smash him to bits before the fight,if bute was any good he would of entered the super6 but didnt cause it was easier fighting ibf ranked top ten fighters in his adopted country in front of sell out arenas makin easy millions,im not saying he was crap im just saying froch was the 2nd best in the division and punched hard accompanied with a granite chin wer as bute punched hard but was thin around the whiskers = froch by k.o :TU:
