Bleacher reports top 10 Australian fighters ever

What do you think? Although I have only seen a few fights and read about them because they were well before my time. Dave Sands and Les Darcy should be ahead of Lester Ellis and Jeff Harding IMO. Just by reading about them tells you that.

Fenech was born in Sydney. In a suburb called St Peters, which is right next to Marrickville.ClivePatrickLyons wrote:Can I just say I didn't meen to offend any-one especially any-one on the list or their family I just pointed out about Aussie born fighter's on the listLike a Boss wrote:You don't rate Fenech ahead of any of the 4 you listed above??ClivePatrickLyons wrote:i'v seen the list if you look at the Australian born fighter's the list would start out with

Johnny Famechon would have to be included in the Australian top ten list.
Johnny was born in France and came to Australia at age five, and was inducted into the Boxing Hall of Fame in 1997.

That is the wrong Fenech. Well known Rugby League player, Mario Fenech who was active the same era as our Jeff, was the Fenech whom was born in Malta. Can I just say I didn't meen to offend any-one especially any-one on the list or their family I just pointed out about Aussie born fighter's on the list and if my memory is serving me correctly Jeff Fenech was born in Malta

Jeff Malcolm could be on the list because he beat Barry Michael convincingly and went on to have 100 win's I guess it would go around and around like a wheel I think Carruthers should be in front of Ellis and Darchiyan

MALCOLM IS ONE BLOKE THAT NEVER GETS A MENTION ON THESE TYPE OF LIST'S IF HE DOES HE'S WAY DOWN THE LISTbogan whisperer wrote:Credit where it is due to Jeff Malcolm for his long and successful career but he is nowhere close to top 10 Australian ever.

Re: Bleacher reports top 10 Australian fighters ever
So bogan whisperer you pick 35 fighter's that you claim are in front of Malcolm on the Aussie all time greatest list and you want me to pick how many that are behind Malcolm from your list of 35 some of your choice's are not or were not even world class fighter's and then I see some are absolute legend's of Aussie boxing........So out of the 35......16 were world champion's and another 6 fought for the world title's 10 time's between them...... Malcolm was in his prime when there was only 2 world champion's from each weight division late 70's and early 80's there was no Break Even Bill Mordeys around then he came along a shade to late for Malcolm there didn't seem to be anyone around at the time to promote any Aussie's on the world stage in the pre Mordey day's he was a fighter who turned pro when he was 15 years old had his 49th pro fight whilest still a teenager was world rated on different occasion's over 3 decade's last world ranking was by the WBA at welterweight in 2002 first time he was world rated was in 1978 by the WBC at Jr Weltereight whats that a 24 year gap from the first time until the last time he got in the top 10 of a major world boxing ranking's list his prime fighting weight Jr Welter he did not get a title shot until he was 35 years old and past his best it was for the WBO welterweight title he lost a un dec he was only ever stopped 3 time's one was a tko the fight was waved off while Malcolm was standing and the other 2 were cut eye stoppage's when he was a grandfather best known for his fast hand's and fast feet and his southpaw stance was very hard to tag at his best that's why he competed for so long even when a grandfather how many on your list were world rated when they were grand daddie's :?? just type how many so I know if Grantlee Kieza and Ray Wheatley pick our best 100 and Lovemore is in our top twenty that'll do me what about Peter Jackson he was fighting in the 1880's your kidding how many of his fight's were for real remember he was a coloured fighter when racism was not kept behind closed door's and no disrespect but Malcolms not better than Nissen/Miller/Tollis/Bracken/Dunne/Henneberry come on he beat another bloke on your list quite easily in his home town and lost a close dec to the other great on your list so I don't see how you think he is no where near top 10 what is close to top ten in your book and can you tell me your top twenty that'll be good................
Re: Bleacher reports top 10 Australian fighters ever
Curruthers,Dave Sands, Richards, Darcy, Bennett[elly],Thompson. George Barnes, Malcolm, Patrick, Rose, Carroll[Jack],Fenech,Tollis,Trevor King, Tony Mundine,I am not rating these fighters in any order, but I have seen them all in action except Darcy, Carroll,Richards, and I have not seen any fighters [aussie] lately that would beat them at their weights,I stand to be corrected. there was a post on another topic, stating that a pro boxer would not fight within a week of his last fight if he was serious about winning, apparently he hasn,t had a look at some of the records of the old and not so od fighters, all the best

should be in front of and you can take your pick on the other 3 or so........That'll put Malcolm in your top 25 or there abouts is that close enough to the top 10 for ya or still way down the list
while your at it see if any-one on your list has fought over 20 former/future National champion's like Malcolm did and that's only the Australian champion's I'm counting not the import's or over seas fighter's he met...............can you help me and pick the other 3 or so from your list if you can find them like I did

Like I said at the beginning, Jeff Malcom is nowhere near our top 10 best ever. Perhaps he's 25th. Perhaps he's 35th. But nowhere near top 10.
End of story as far as I'm concerned. But feel free to have the last word
Re: Bleacher reports top 10 Australian fighters ever
Hard to argue about any on that list.
Agree Curruthers deserves a spot and could make a case that he fought better opposition than Lester.
Also Ron Richards? We gloss over some of those guys from that era. They were fighting and beating future and former World Champs on a regular basis.

Two of my all time Idols in the top 3. No use debating the rest, there is no correct answer.
