I'll have to check up on that, but as far as I can recall, this was seen as just another step in Martinez getting a World Title shot.

You must not have been following boxing at the time at all as Frampton was the 1/4 favourite for that fight and nobody was picking Martinez to beat him.

And yet if you choose to look at this thread, a load of people were expecting that this step up was too much too soon for Carl.

and Calzaghe was a strong betting favourite against Hopkins and huge betting favouite against RJJ, so if they're the best picks you ever made then you must have some real shockers. Calzaghe was 1/2 to beat Hopkins, Calzaghe was 2/9 to beat Jones Jr.

Calzaghe had never fought at Light Heavy before and many were unsure on how he would carry the weight (Ricky Hatton didn't exactly shine in his Welterweight debut against Collazo) and frankly, Calzaghe still had his doubters considering the amount of good opponents that he never faced... People like; & RJJ, James Toney & Bernard himself. Even Sven Ottke was brought up on occasion.

So yes, Joe still had his nay-sayers in the ranks of boxing enthusiasts around the world.

I believe that I illustrated my point in my above link. But I would also add that it's very easy to look back on events and criticse others for their opinions. People don't seem to consider the boxing public's perception is an important thing going in to fights and yet for some reason after the bout is over, it's only the result that matters.

It's a very fickle thing - this perception - and I tend to think that it is well worth remembering the landscape of things going in to fights.

As for me, while hardly my best pick a recent one where I was more accurate than the majority here was Jack over Groves. I had seen Jack fight several times and believe he didn't perform to his full potential, while I also knew that first round stoppage losses can be misleading. He struck me as someone who could be a top 10 fighter if he was on his game, and the win over Dirrell was better than any win on Groves's record in my view, not to mention that GGG hadn't looked so hot going into the fight. While I understand why Groves was a favorite the volume of people choosing him to win by blowout stoppage surprised me.
