I haven't logged on here in a year, and it seems you've gotten even dumber.
Patterson was a two time heavyweight champion, who got BETTER after losing the title, and was robbed from a third title.

Vladimir's losses to Purrity, Brewster and Sanders came when the man was still a prospect, and green. He has been without a loss in eleven years. Depending on what belts you give credit to, he's made anywhere between 18-23 title defenses. The man's greatly improved, and would have easily defeated the three men he lost to anytime during his time as world champion.

In this sense, Vladimir's quantity easily over-rides Liston's quality. Besides, I have little doubt that Klitschko (either one) would have stopped Patterson as well. Too small. As a matter of fact, Liston was only 6'0" and 210 pounds..... I can't see him doing much either with either Klitschko brother. Let's face it, the men of yesteryear are comparable to modern day light heavyweights.

Got it, the klitchko's would beat Patterson so all of them are better than Liston. Really sound logic. Sonny would brutalize wlad and jab vitali to pieces. Not that a hypothetical match up has any bearing on ranking fighters. Sonny destroyed a guy in your top 20 twice and faced another. Wlad & vitali? Crickets

Prime Jeffries too strong.

Loses first few rounds before he catches up with him and forces a mid-round TKO

No Patterson did not get better after losing to Liston.

Wladimir was still a prospect? Still green.? Are you frikkin serious?
The Purrity embarrassment was his 25th fight.
The Sanders disaster was his 42nd fight.
The Brewster debacle was his his 45th fight.

He lost because he has a glass jaw and and has poor stamina.

Too small? You are comparing Sonny Liston to a light heavyweight? Wow. Have you lost your mind? Please start thinking.
Why even do your little tournament? All we need to do is look at fighter's weights, right? :o

I agree.Calling Wlad green or a prospect was actually one of the funniest things I have seen in a long time.

Well that's this thread ruined guys.

This, I'm sure, wasn't intended as a "let's debate the top 20" thread. It was a bit of fun, making an imaginary competition to see how people thought a bunch of great heavyweights would have faired.

I'm certain, if the comments are to be believed, that HH has a track record on here of being a tad off the mark.
but this could have been an interesting thread but it's been derailed by the same clowns that turn every other "top 25 in the #####weight division" type threads into a tedious bitchfest.

well done lads

ps I'd take James J Jefferies to UD Witherspoon.

Yeah I agree with this post. I didn't agree with the list either. Liston instead of Patterson isn't right. Also Witherspoon shouldn't have been in there either. However, the point of the thread was to pick some winners of some interestng match ups, not debate the list.

I'm taking Jeffries to beat the spoon on pts

I think Tim Witherspoon is one of the most under rated boxers ever.
He could give any champion in history fits.I am not saying he beats the all time greats but he gives them a good match up.

Well, manners are always valued, but most of the folks here have learned to have a pretty thick hide. It's a boxing site not a sewing circle, but a point about civility is always relevant.

HH has strong opinions, as do quite a few here, and some of us forget that assessment of this sport has quite a bit of subjectivity. I find myself asking some of the same questions that others have asked in this case, but I agree, it's his hypothetical.

I think Charles is too low, Walcott too high, Liston should be in, etc etc...but I don't think HH has lost his marbles. He's just including those he has assessed in the order he has assessed them.

Current or common wisdom have often shown to be way off the mark over and over again. Baer vs Braddock, Tyson vs Buster, Ali vs Spinks, in my case Lacy vs Calzaghe. So by rights there should be plenty of room for diverse opinions.

Hypothetical match ups among 20 names, and whoever gets the most votes in 24 hours, moves on to the next match.

In the end, it will be determined by the best win/loss/draw ratio. :box:

In the case of .500 records (upon conclusion) they will be matched again (series, best two out of three).

The names in this top twenty tournament are as follows:

Muhammad Ali, Joe Louis, Larry Holmes, Joe Frazier, Evander Holyfield, George Foreman, Lennox Lewis, Jack Dempsey, Rocky Marciano, Gene Tunney, Vladimir Klitschko, Max Schmeling, Max Baer, James Jefferies, Jack Johnson, Vitali Klitschko, Mike Tyson, Tim Witherspoon (he was a 2x champ after all), Jersey Joe Walcott, and Floyd Patterson.

Some may not agree with that being a legit top twenty list, but I think it is solid enough. :TU:

First match....

Floyd Patterson vs Max Schmeling
I'll pick Schmeling in by 10th round TKO :TU:
