Just making the point Merc would have had a very good chance of beating that lot, bearing in mind Tubbs and Page would have possibly decided to have couple of pick me up lines the night before, and Coetzee and Tate not exactly made of the sternest stuff, and Boneclutcher could no way match Ray in the heart department, and I've not even bothered to list heroes like Bruce Seldon and Tony Tucker.keithmoonhangover wrote:Prime Tubbs would absolutely school him, as would Page - Mercer was awful against good movers and fast hands. I hear what you're saying but if the Mercer that lost to Ferguson, or the Mercer that was dominated by Damiani for 8 rounds, or the Mercer that was totally outclassed by an old Larry Holmes, turned up, he'd lose to all of them I think.

It's funny, once a fighter has retired for good, fans are less critical and get a bit nostalgic.... They look through rose tinted spectacles.
I followed Mercer since 1988 Olympics when he walked through everyone.... But he rather flattered to deceive as a pro.
Mercer Had some good fights, the best one being Tommy Morrison... Although Tommy was chinny and also Morrison was winning until the fifth. But a good performance nonetheless. Also against Lewis, though some would say Lewis just had a bad night.
But one must also remember his sub par performances:
Split against Ossie Occasio
Distance fights against Kimmuel Odom, Jerry Jones and Ossie Occasio
Out boxed by Jesse Ferguson
Out boxed by Damiani until he bangs Francesco right on the tip of his big nose
Out boxed by Ancient Larry Holmes
DRAW! with Marion Wilson
Destroyed by Klitschko..... Ok Ray was a little shot, but anyone suggesting that Mercer would beat him in his prime are deluded. oh, he'd have a chance.... But only a small one.

Yes fair enough, Merc could be pretty dreadful at times ( did he really ask that fella to throw that fight? I think he did ..) but a seriously tough SOB, a chin of iron and his KO of Morrison is still one of the most brutal of all time, thanks to a psychotic referee.
Have to admit I'll be intrigued to see old Ike back in the ring, even though I know it won't end well ( and let's be honest, there's not many will sympathize ) but hopefully he's clear of his demons, and they don't match him too harshly.
At his peak he was one seriously scary mother*****.

Yes he was. But at his age, as one poster said, I think it will be like Tony Ayala's comeback. Ok wins against lower ranked opponents. Then a fight against a half decent world class fighter who will bash him.MightyWarrior wrote:Yes fair enough, Merc could be pretty dreadful at times ( did he really ask that fella to throw that fight? Apart from the Tyson fight, Bonecrusher had a lot of heart.

Mavrovic biography with BoxRec:mikiesb wrote:On a side note wasn t mavrovic meant to be making a comeback ?. Lewis said mavro was his hardest fight.if I remember rightly.
Mavrovic planned to return to the ring as a cruiserweight against Enad Licina in 2013, but he pulled out of the fight after he broke his ribs during a sparring session.

Apparently his adviser, who also manages Pac Man says he'll be straight in with a top 15 heavyweight on the Pac v Bradley undercard.reggaereggae wrote:Yes he was. Threads like this show how deluded people really are. If the guy wasn't undefeated no one would care. It just shows you how important the "0" is to causal fans who really don't know anything about boxing.
Ike Ibeabuchi is absolutely shot away and should be receiving mental health care around the clock. He tried to commit suicide and permanently handicapped a child. He actually thought he was a president. They you have the incident with the knife and finally imprisonment for battery with intent and attempted sexual assault. Which he couldn't stand as he was incompetent to stand trial.
Should someone with this past problems really be fighting? Because morons like some people in here want to see him fight again simply because of his "0". Promoters and TV stations know you'll tune in and they can make money. Exploiting a mentally ill man is disgraceful. People should be ashamed of themselves.

Movrovic surely had to be on the gear? Retires and then drops 4 stone...muscle wasting disease I hear people say...
Didn't Lewis once say something about everyone he was competing with were geared up? Fair few of his opponenets have the odd whiff ( at the very least ) of being "enhanced" shall we say! Mavrovic, Golota, Morrison, Vitali and of course Holyfield amongst others.

Expect this version of Ibeabuchi to be equivalent to a poor mans Sam Peter.

That's not exactly true. The child was already permanently handicapped before Ike drove him into a wall.Exoddus wrote:He tried to commit suicide and permanently handicapped a child.

Never thought about that - now you see it, Mavrovic's wasting disease does seem rather convenient now doesn't it?lillywhite14 wrote:Movrovic surely had to be on the gear? Retires and then drops 4 stone...muscle wasting disease I hear people say...![]()

Re: Ike Ibeabuchi is back! And on the Pacquiao undercard in April!
I can't see any man who goes life and death, and in plenty of eyes, lost to David Tua, outboxing Lenox Lewis for 12 rounds. You can bet your bollocks that Lewis turns up completely focused and ready for this mythical match up too as Ike was building a serious reputation, no Rahman nonsense here.
Ibeabuchi was potentially a good challenger but his chances get bigged up with each passing year.
Look at how each dealt with David Tua. Ike couldn't beat him like Lennox did because he didn't have the ability.
I'm not saying Ibeabuchi didn't stand a chance, of course he did, but if a prime motivated and fit Lennox Lews turns up and performs...[/quote]
Yeah why with the mountains of reading I do on the Sport I have never once read anything about Tua possible win there?
