Which Brit has had most failed attempts at a world title?
Re: Which Brit has had most failed attempts at a world title?
George Groves has had 3 shots already! He is looking to top this list soon I reckon
Re: Which Brit has had most failed attempts at a world title?
One small correction to my question - for "lost", read "did not succeed", as one of his 3 EBU challenges was a draw. And he was around in the 1980s to 1990s, if that helps.olij999 wrote:PS - on a sort-of-related note, which British fighter lost challenges for Area, British, Commonwealth, European and world titles (one of the 4 major sanctioning bodies for the world title), and never won a major title?

Clinton Woods won on his 4th attempt.
Good question - I don't think that the question applies to those who won and lost various world title fights but more who made the highest number of unsuccessful attempts.

Re: Which Brit has had most failed attempts at a world title?
OK - answer is Danny Porter - see http://boxrec.com/boxer/3445 - one Area shot, one British, three Commonwealth, three EBU, one WBO. To be fair to him, he does not deserve to have this accolade - I recall he was utterly robbed in the second EBU challenge.bripez wrote:Bump for this one.olij999 wrote:PS - on a sort-of-related note, which British fighter lost challenges for Area, British, Commonwealth, European and world titles (one of the 4 major sanctioning bodies for the world title), and never won a major title?

On the international front, another 6 and another 5:
6 - Manuel Medina – amid the title reigns, he lost challenges to John-John Molina, Tom Johnson, Naseem Hamed, Luisito Espinosa, Juan Manuel Marquez and Cassius Baloyi
5 - Roberto Duran – lost challenges to Benitez, Hagler, Hearns, Leonard III and Joppy

No, think that was a challenge for the WBC super-bantam, after he relinquished his WBC bantam. So that would be 6.littlepug wrote:think he lost his title in that one so wasnt a failed attemptorbtastic wrote:Don't forget Zaragoza
